    I always enjoy listening to Tony. He doesn’t care what people think about him and expresses himself in an honest, articulate manner.
    Banks’ keyboard skills are pure genius in my opinion. He can move from writing like Bach, for example, to a modern rock player. That puts him on a par above 99.999% of his peers.
    His education and intelligence are obvious.
    I don’t understand why people don’t like him. He is a reserved English gentleman. Perhaps he rebelled in his own way by not adapting to the “rock” social norms and remained true to himself. I respect that quality in him.

    Man, I wish I was back in 1981 again. But back then I was clueless and uptight. Just hearing voices from that era makes me feel great. Go Tony!!

      Well, if you were listening to Genesis in 1981 enough to foment interest to upload a 42+ year old Tony Banks interview, you probably weren't that clueless and uptight.

    This is good to listen to, another of those that was before I knew who Genesis the band, was, it was before really I know what musical genres were and aside the odd bit of Cliff Richard then played through record players etc by my mum,, rock pop and so forth unknown to a then 6 year old me. I like to hear the older interviews as well as the ones I remember from when I was around 10 and upwards to date, they give me more sense and knowledgr than ever of these fabulous people who were the heart of Genesis both then, now and with Mr Banks and Mr Rutherford, the whole way through. Thanks for posting, I like finding these uploads Mr Banksian. Tony is always interesting to listen to and this interview no exception ☺

    How can this be 40 years ago? Ugh. Love his comments about "Duchess". Duke was quite an album. Genesis is really 3 or 4 "different bands" over time and Duke was the best of one of those bands.

    Quite surprising to hear him say that he could take or leave Face Value besides In the Air Tonight. In a 90s interview he said he was a big fan of Hello I Must Be Going and I think the albums are quite similar is sound and song quality.

      More cynicism on Hello I Must Be Going which might be why Tony prefers it!

    This is the only time I've heard him publically downplay phil's man on the corner, I know he's mentioned the drum machine pattern before

    He does sound a bit jealous of Phils successful solo album here.

    • @scottburns2600
      @scottburns2600 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'm not hearing that at all. He expressed how he wasn’t a big fan of the style of Phil's album aside from In the air but at least he's honest. I don't think Banks is capable of being jealous of Phil because he never and still doesn't want the spotlight on him

    Tony ...the last thing I want to say to you and members of Genesis is....and....really 8 have really tried very hard to get a reply from one of you over the years....unfortunately you never noticed my comments...I got a letter from Phil once and my pupil works with Hugh Padgham and so does my brother....but I am on breaking point....I have literally had pioneered Genesis from my public school days at Bloxham School and tried virtually everything to get anything back...I was at the reunion concert in 1982 Mk bowl ....but you are all too old now ...i cannot proceed with this....I am struggling to come to terms with the facts that all my hero's are getting old ...and ...I am just a lonely musician who nobody knows or respects ...
