"Why was he talking to it". Silence and element of surprise is what a cat wants when it stalks its prey. Letting it know you are well aware of its presence will greatly reduce your chances of being attacked. The cat is literally backing him down and the man does EXACTLY what you should. Another cat would be verbal, make itself big and retreat while keeping eye contact until it could get away. This is how you should act.
Years ago, When my husband was driving Semi’s for Budweiser, the company who owned the trucks told him if there was a deer in the road, hit it- don’t serve. But if it was a Moose in the road, do everything you can not to hit it, b/c it would total the Semi…😮
So I'm a country boy from KY who grew up on a farm. I was kicked by one of our horses when I was about 15. It was a Tennessee walker that had a cut on its hind that I was trying to put salve on. I got my arm up to block the impact and it still fractured my forearm and separated my rib cartilage. Dude at 4:30 in this video took some real damage, I feel for him.
We had a dairy farm, my daddy grew up milking the huge Holsteins we milked. His nose was broke a couple of time by a swat from a tail. When I was 9, one of my ponies kicked me in the knee and it moved my knee cap all the way over.
That bird video is from here in Australia. We have a "Swooping season" over here where the Magpie's are laying eggs and they swoop and attack you if you walk, or ride your bike past their nests. You don't know until it's too late. You legit just have to cover your head and make a run for it. Then it's just a matter of can you run fast enough to get away - and how angry is the bird already. There was a really sad case here last year when a new mum was walking along the street carrying her baby and was attacked by a Magpie. She tripped over and unfortunately her baby ended up passing away from the injuries from the fall. So when Magpies attack - the fear is real......
I had never been stung by a flying insect, but at age 42 I was in a camper with a nest if yellow jackets and although we seemed to coexist all summer, one morning I woke up and one was on my chest and I merely reacted without thinking and smacked it, next thing I knew I was swarmed by a dozen or more, and stung 25+ times. Now when I see even a honey bee, it's like kill bill, and I hear that noise the bride heard whenever she saw one of her would be killers.
Last summer I was on a camping/hiking trip. One night a bear came into my camp, I was way out in the national forest alone. Scary as hell. Then a few days later I ran into one on a hike but it took off hella fast and I just saw it running down the hill.
My thoughts exactly, “drop that pole & run”. That’s why no matter if I’m in the city or country, I carry concealed. Better safe than sorry… I live in the country in Nor Cal, where there’s plenty of mountains lions. They scare me more than a bear. They’re huge, mean & are watching you & you have idea they’re there. I was in my Grand Cherokee Jeep crossing a small creek with my boys & a mountain lion just appeared & crossed in front of us. It was as long as front of my Jeep & almost as high in height. It’s tail was huge too. Scary animal…

Polar bears are the largest bears. They get up to 1,600lbs, the largest ever recorded weighing a whopping 2,200lbs. They're also the only animal to actively go after humans and hunt them.
I hooked my cousin in the eyelid, flying fishing in Scotland. We standing side by side. I whipped the fly back and the wind blew and hooked him straight through the eye lid. Had to freeze his eye and remove the barb to slide it out.
if ya get hooked its a good idea just to keep some snips in your box, most fisherman I know do as well so you can just snip the hook to get it through instead of having to yank the hole thing plus the end through. generally you only need to hit the hospital if it hits something vital .
I live in the Adirondack wilderness in northern New York. But I grew up around the block from DMX, rest in power. Black bears here don't mess with moose. But grizzlies, which aren't found here, will go after whatever, never mind how big. But all alpha predators will first take out the weak and the old. Nature's population control. A grizzly might think about it before stepping up to an alpha moose in his prime. Those antlers swing like Francis Ngannou. I love what you're doing. Very relatable. Super entertaining. to remove a fishhook you flatten the barb with a pair of pliers. You SHOULD flatten them before using, to avoid the whole thing of trying to do it while impaled. been snagged a few times. in Canada now you aren't even supposed to have a Barb, idk about the States. But when I was a kid (in the 70's/80's) we always had barbs on our lines and that was the plan. thus from all my training a pair of pliers is a necessary part of your fishing tackle
Minor detail about bear defense: a brown bear's skull is both sloped and extremely thick. Headshots are actually one of the worst tactics you can use on a bear that's down on all fours. They've been known to shrug off shotgun slugs and smaller caliber rifle rounds to the head because the bullet just skips off. TL;DR - a .40 probably isn't big enough.
