  • Showing how to fix a small space heater by replacing the thermal fuse.
    I am aware that I made a mistake with the level of the background music. I very much appreciate all of you kind people who defended me against those few people who rudely pointed out my error. To those who made constructive comments regarding my audio gain mistake, thanks. The point is well taken. I have taken a video editing class, so my skills are improved; but I prefer not to spend time correcting this less-than-perfect video, since it is getting the message across adequately. Cheers to all and upward wishes.

    Some heaters can have a self-resetting thermal overload device. The Lakewoods don't have it, but if your brand does it will cause the heater to stop, then work again later after it cools down. If your heater is acting up, it can be a problem with the wall outlet, or somewhere between the outlet and the breaker panel. A house can have a poor connection in the wiring. If there is a poor connection at the outlet, it will generate excess heat. If the plug and/or outlet get hot, you have a problem there. Please understand that I am not an expert at fixing heaters. I just figured out that the thermal fuse was the problem with mine, and hoped to help others avoid discarding good heaters that can be fixed. I am aware that I made a mistake with the level of the background music. I very much appreciate all of you kind people who defended me against those few people who rudely pointed out my error. To those who made constructive comments regarding my audio gain mistake, thanks. The point is well taken. The same thing happened to my space heater (I have the exact same one you to) about a year ago. I replaced it with a resettable temperature switch from an old furnace that was rated at the same temperature. Now for trips, it will auto reset. Next thing that went out on that space heater was the thermostat, it fused and wouldn’t shut off. This thermostat has a tip over sensor that connects to the thermostat to disconnect power. I replaced the thermostat with one from an old in-wall space heater, and added a pressure switch to the bottom of the heater to act as a tip over sensor. Now all I have to do is add a knob to the new thermostat, and I’m golden.

    I know nothing about electrical stuff, but am determined to rescue my great little DeLonghi Tower heater. Can't find the thermal fuse (yet), but we have a multi-meter somewhere and your video gave me the info (and courage) to move forward. Have to learn how to use the meter and then I'll be back if I have questions or to report. For now, I've retrieved this great little heater. Thank you for giving me the inspiration. You can jump it with a wire of course and it will work fine. But a thermal fuse costs $1.50. A house costs $100,000 and up. You decide. The temptation is to replace the fuse with a wire, just to get the heater working until you can get a fuse. That's OK, unless you're a procrastinator like me. This heater needs a fuse in the range of 120 degrees C. I have four of these heaters, so I keep an extra fuse on hand.

    • @blurreyes
      @blurreyes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thermal fuse is either good or blown. Other brand heaters might have a thermal overload device. These can automatically re-set after a cool-down period. They pretty much all have a thermostatic control which turns the heating element and fan motor off and on to regulate temperature. These can malfunction and cause erratic off / on cycling. I really don't know much about these heaters besides finding out about the thermal fuse when I took my first one apart.

    You can replace the thermostat if you can find one like it. Take a picture before you disconnect the wires, so you can reassemble properly. It is possible to replace the thermostat with an on/off switch, but then you will have only high and low settings. That might be acceptable for some situations. Experiment thoughtfully. Safety is of prime importance.

    I worked at a retail store where half of these heaters came back. I checked a few and most were thermal fuses blown. Weak? or overtaxed? I got several working and found that some were a bit tight on the tolerances and the fan blades would rub against the internal duct. It took a bit of twisting to get the fan to run centered in the housing.

  • @OlGoodJoe
    @OlGoodJoe 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Now if someone could post a picture sharing how to adjust the automatic high limits to a higher temperature. They all shut off at way too cool of temperature, then you have to turn it off for a while so it will reset and can only run on medium heat even though there is a high setting. Many have both a thermal fuse type like the one in the video AND an automatic type.

      If it's producing heat, then the thermal fuse is still good. Sounds like you have a thermostat issue. If it still works properly, you can get an in-line on/off switch: www.amazon.com/STARELO-Extension-Waterproof-Grounded-Receptacle/dp/B0CH814D6H/ref=sr_1_1_sspa

    Its criminal how cheaply many brands of these type of heater are made...my screws wont hold after removing...gonna have to use bigger ones...i haven't liked the thermal fuse since the beginning
    ..if i turn it on i want hot air coming out..in my boat the the reflection of infrared waves off the shiny and smooth white gel coat of much of the interior I believe triggers this fuse before heat has sufficiently spread throught the cabin...its only a 24' sailboat and these heaters would work fine....an older model with just Hi/Low switch kept me toasty warm in 15°f weather..once i got the dial equipped models they shut off....all three I've purchased....2 went swimming in frustration so the third will be the patient in my experimental electonics surgery attempt today..

  • @bodeine454

    Thanks for the video, we have a Patton milk house heater similar to yours, it has 2 heat settings and I noticed about a week ago that it wasn't cycling properly, it started to kick on and off often. Now when I turn the heat control knob all the way up it acts like it wants to run and sometimes it'll run for a few seconds but then shuts off again. I can hear it clicking a lot while it's trying to start but it mainly just clicks on and off and won't get going. Does this sound like something other than a thermal fuse? I think you mentioned in another comment that the a thermal fuse either works or doesn't, there's no in between?

    • @obsoleteprofessor2034

      Probably one of the elements burned out. These small heaters usually have a high and low setting. The low is probably wired in direct so it heats anytime you turn it on. The high rating (second heating element) is selected and turns on the second element and it should feel warmer. If one of them is burned out you will have low output.

    Music is too loud. It's distracting and makes it hard to hear the speech.

    What is the benefit of playing music while you are talking whether it is "Heat Wave" by Martha and the Vandellas or not? It is definitely a detraction. I went to another channel after a minute and 32 seconds. Why be annoying when you are trying to provide instructional video? Use the music as a short intro into your video and then kill it.
