Hi alex m a good fan of urs from south Africa, ive gotten my beardie at 2 months old 9 months ago which makes him around a year, however he does look rather small to me he isnt stunted as ive seen images of stunted dragons, i just feel he is growing slowly, he was a smaller size dan his sibling at the pet store, i picked him as he was a far better orange colour, ive been feeding him crickets and mealworms since ive gotten him, i want to switch to dhubias and superworms, whats your advice, my pet store does not offer a variety of sizes in dhubias its more on the adult size end, at his age will u recommend me feeding him dhubias and superworms as i want to beef him up and get him big
All great info man , really enjoyed the break down and agree I hate crickets and try my best not to keep them on hand but a few days . Love the roaches for sure ! Keep up the great work .
I'm thinking of keeping insects (as the pets, not just feeders), but those themselves need feeders, so would this video still apply to feeding, say, a praying mantis or ant colony? *help i like weird pets*
Thank you for this information! I've always wanted a leopard gecko but really abhor crickets, so I'm glad there are alternatives that are still as healthy or more so.
I don't have power outages during the winter because it never gets cold enough where I live. I only get power outages from electrical overloads in the neighborhood and high winds. You could maybe use a power bank for the heat source.
matthew H are they dead yet? You should always buy more every 6 months to stop Inbreeding if you had 200 roaches in your breeder tank you should buy maybe 50 more to stop inbreeding.
I gotta say, i just found your channel a couple days ago, and the fact that youre so passionate at a young age is great! You do a very good job with your vids/merchandise!
For anyone with over 2 primary insect-eating animals, I definitely recommend you start your own dubia roach colony. Not only are they nutritious (as stated in the video), but also not very smelly, easy to care for, easy to breed, and it saves you money :). I have 3 bearded dragons and I've had my colony for only about 3 months now and I am almost able to fully switch them off of feeders that I buy. So my original feeder bill (not including vegetables) was around 35$ a month and now it's only at 5$ every month, soon to be 0. But I hope someone reading this perhaps may invest in their own dubia roaches for the health of their animals :)
and for anyone reading this - discoids are a great (and legal) alternative!! they're pretty much the same. long lifespans, can't climb well, can't fly, don't smell, easy to breed + care for. pretty much dubia twins with similar nutrition value
GodEmperorWilly i say u should try them anyway, unless u keep/feed ur reptile in a place ur mom can see. u can order them online and they come all packaged up, so unless u open the box in front of ur mom, she would never know. if she asks, u can just say u got the usual feeders online for a better deal or smth
I am watching this video with crickets chiiiiiirping in my ears! I literally just started a cricket colony. I will be feeding them off as they grow and starting dubia's! Thanks Alex.
Great job with the channel, your the reason I'm getting my first ball python, seeing the setup videos inspired me to get my very own, so I thank u for the inspiration👍👍
I use Superworms and crickets. Superworms are pretty great because they're mealworms with more meat on them. Unfortunately like you said, Dubias are banned in Canada 😑😑😑
I started breeding mealworms a few years ago, then I stopped feeding my animals mealworms and switched to Blatta lateralis roaches instead. Well I forgot about the mealworms, now it's like 3 years later and they're still alive... They've been metamorphosing into beetles, bred and laid eggs, died then the larva has eaten the dead beetles, it's a perpetual cycle that has kept them alive for years without me realizing it. I don't have any reptiles that eat mealworms anymore and all my tarantulas are too big for them so I don't know what to do with them...
I (actually my dog, but) found a beautiful piece of wood outside a while ago and I really want to put it inside my snake tank, but I don't know if that would ever be safe, and if so, does anybody have any ideas as to what methods and/or products would best be used to clean it and make sure my ballpython doesn't get sick from it?
My mom was cooking spaghetti and I guess one of my dubias got out and it ran across the floor she screamed and I had to get rid of reptiles 😓 but love your videos!😘😂

You can buy silent crickets and they are actually silent. Also morio worms (supersized mealworms) bite really hard and one gave me a really bad bruise.
It looks like I breed dubias and mealworms for food for my new scorpion. It is polar opposite with crickets and dubias where I live. Crickets are way to noisy and are no go. Worms and dubias are silent. Informative video.
I dropped a brand new 100ct of dubias in my bedroom last night. I caught a surprising amount, but damn. I did have one of the little egg crate sections in my hand at the time, so about 1/3 of them didn't fall, but still.
my leopard gecko would go on little hunger strikes when i fed him crickets. itd be a while between feedings, but he still wouldnt take them, and then theyd die pretty quick. i changed to dubia roaches recently, and now my gecko eats at least a couple every feeding, and they last a whole lot longer. i also noticed hes getting a whole lot fatter on roaches than he was on crickets
I found a place that sells Dubias sourced locally. The guy working at the store pretty much convinced my dad they were cool, but he knows my mom doesn't like roaches. So to solve this problem, we call dubia roches "dubia bugs/beetles" or just "dubias" and my mom doesn't care. LOL Hope this helps someone!
I’ve also has experience with all three of these. I just have one leopard gecko and she’s a bit picky. Lately the only insects she’s eaten enthusiastically have been superworms. I’m trying to get her back onto dubias in fear of her getting pudgy, but like I said, she’s picky and sometimes doesn’t even see them. Anyone else have picky eaters like this?
Dubias are banned in our home because our younger son, Erik, prefers to set them free. Plus, his Leopard Gecko, Apophis, doesn’t like them. Our older son, Chris’ beardie Stoner, prefers super worms & as a treat, hornworms along with greens.
hey!! im getting my first ever reptile for my bday!! Thank you!!!!
Where do you keep your crickets that they are dying so fast? I'm buying medium size and keep them all in large box with food and water and they are living for several weeks like this, they grow so quickly that within a week or two I have problem finding any smaller ones for baby geckos.
Hey, so I’ve got 2 baby crested geckos I’m feeding them crickets they eat them but about like 1 every 4 weeks should I add or change the diet to mealworms or someother worm like wax or anything please reply
Hearing all this I wonder why no one talks about feeding grasshoppers/locusts. I feed those and they are very common reptile food where I live. And my skinks love them. Are they not common food in america or why are they never mentioned?
I believe the Black Soldier Fly Larvae (aka Phoenix worm, Calci-Worms, etc.) are more ideal than Dubias. BSFL's have an excellent Calcium content and do not require Calcium dusting. I feed my young Crested Gecko BSFL's and mealworms (calcium dusted of course)..
chitin can be a problem for younger beardies, personally I use them as a "snack feeder" - keeping them in the food bowl (now with a few small discoid roaches) for when my leo wants to munch at 3am. they're good for more diversity but bad as any kind of real staple.
Dubias , silkworms , meal and super worms and butter worms are all the very best. Silkworms and dubias are by far the best. Meal and super worms are good too and cheap. And then butters are a little less but also good for a treat.
What's the least smelly , I've been using red runners , and need quite a lot of feeders ? As i am in a class room Colleagues are noticing / complaining about there smell
I only gave mine crickets in the beginning. After they kept escaping, the males keeping us awake at night, and reproducing, I woke up in the middle of the night because I had a baby in my ear. It was trying to chirp, in there, and it kept eating at the inside of my ear. Most. Horrible. Experience. Ever. I tried shaking my head, I slapped the side of my head against the pillow to try to make it fall out, but the damn thing used it's claws and teeth thingies. I bled in my ear. I used a spray bottle, put my ear under water, and then it turned inside my ear and finally crawled out again. I was in the worst pain ever. And the next day was a Sunday, so i couldn't go to a doctor as soon as possible. I am only feeding mealworms now. The thought of the crickets already give me chills. I think I'm traumatized or something now xD
I am getting some chubby frogs and my parents and I don't want to hear crickets all the time and they don't want roaches in our house and I heard meal worms are bad for them (chubby frogs are similar to tomato frogs) so what should i feed the chubby frogs
What about Canadian nightcrawlers? Tbh that's arguably the best feeder for temperate species, _especially_ amphibians such as horned frogs, salamanders, newts, and other animals
I bought a new heating pad and a 100w thermostat for a leopard geecko enclosure I'm starting where would the best place to put the probe I have it in between the mat and the enclosure but it Is getting the enclosure floor hot enough :/
Oddly enough the crickets I have, have had them for 3 days now, they haven't made a single sound. Most of them are still alive, they have really good food in there so I'm hoping they'll make it for a good while. It's really strange they are so quiet though. I have them in my bedroom and was fully prepared to be superbly annoyed but nothing so far. No smell, no sound. Really weird
Hi I currently am feeding my Leo mealworms only because my mom hasn’t been willing to let me buy crickets can you list some tips on how I can convince her to let me get crickets or list alternatives for crickets
So many people ask “How many mealworms are too much” this answer is NEVER universal can’t sit here and say every leopard gecko needs to have 15 meals worms every 2-3 days. Because just like humans that varies SOOoOo much, some humans eat more then others. Some don’t have as big of appetites as others, and I believe that’s why they started putting in a “time” limit, where they said feed your gecko as much as it will eat in 15minutes. It’s in between those two things. The answer is it depends on your Leo. If it’s a big 9inch giant it would need more then a small 5 inch new adult Leo. The best advice I could give you is Learn about your geckos body language. You will actually know when he’s probably had enough. He won’t be as interested. He will seem like he’s basking and digesting, he may even go up to a feeder look like he’s gunna eat it , lick it and turn away. At any of these points you know the gecko has had enough. Another thing is how does your leopard gecko look? Is it an adult leopard gecko and it’s neck is skinny it’s tail doesn’t seem to bulge out just a little bit and is more of a straight tail, A leopard geckos tail shouldn’t really be the same size all the way down it should be big and kind of be more like a cone shape (not really but for lack of a better example) if your Leo has either of those things then he’s not being fed enough, OR you’re not properly dusting and giving proper supplements , most time’s its lack of food. If your Leo is underweight people think we’ll I’ll just give it a mouse and feed it fatty waxworms for the next month, though that will make him fatter it won’t be a healthy weight gain, if your Leo has a tail like a thin pencil , you DO NOT want to just feed fatty stuff, yes maybe do that once or twice over a month but simply changing how often and how you dust your Leo’s food will quickly put on the weight in a more healthy controlled way, if you’re feeding her once every 3-4 days or less change that to every second day consistently getting the nutrients into your Leo will be the best way to put on the weight they need .
Just found out i can get dubias in my country + they are dirt cheap. im still gonna try breeding them so i have a consistent food source for my future beardie.

Steve Gee oh ok I didnt know that. Explains it thanks.
I have a vinegaroon and a Hedgehog. Both refused to eat live mealworms and were actually terrified by them. Quite frankly, me too.
YES, AND THE LEVEL YOU HAVE THE CRICKET CHIRP IN THE VIDEO IS ACTUALLY HOW LOUD THOSE DAMN THINGS ARE.
You should feed your insects BugGrub which is made my the biodude.
I prefer mealworms, they are the cheapest, easiest to breed, and pretty much any animal will take it
I've never noticed any digestion problem, the only bad aspect is that they have to much fat
chitin can be a problem for younger beardies, personally I use them as a "snack feeder" - keeping them in the food bowl (now with a few small discoid roaches) for when my leo wants to munch at 3am. they're good for more diversity but bad as any kind of real staple.
Dubias , silkworms , meal and super worms and butter worms are all the very best. Silkworms and dubias are by far the best. Meal and super worms are good too and cheap. And then butters are a little less but also good for a treat.
And black soldier fly larvae are good
What's the least smelly , I've been using red runners , and need quite a lot of feeders ? As i am in a class room Colleagues are noticing / complaining about there smell
Thanks
Hey grape videos can we do a video on cleaning the Doobie Roach and taking the little ones out
I only gave mine crickets in the beginning.
Manu Ela Jeeze that’s terrible
When I had a turtle, I fed him a mix of meal worms and pellets. Probly not the best, but he seemed okay with it. He ate them.
Xavier Horn waddup birb!
I bought a new heating pad and a 100w thermostat for a leopard geecko enclosure I'm starting where would the best place to put the probe I have it in between the mat and the enclosure but it Is getting the enclosure floor hot enough :/
Fiona Shepley thanks I will definitely try that !
Dubias are wonderful in every way possible except none of my reptiles will even consider eating one
What is the best for emperor scorpion
i fed my young beardie mealworms/super worms idk and people are saying he will die, now i'm worried...
Valka the only issue with bearded dragons eating mealworms is impaction. Just make sure he’s pooping ok.
what about locusts?
Jayden Evetts they don’t have them in America they are one of the best to feed
Just found out i can get dubias in my country + they are dirt cheap. im still gonna try breeding them so i have a consistent food source for my future beardie.
