    This guy actually knows what this word means. Everyone else is using it incorrectly and the word had now taken on like 4 different new meanings. Thanks internet and misinformation

      You've hit the nail on the head there. I hate to say it, but the whole "know your worth" tik Tok girls have made it to mean that anyone who disagrees with you is gaslighting you. So it comes in pretty any argument where one person thinks the other is being unreasonable or irrational about something. Suggesting you overreacted to not getting a good night text isn't gaslighting you into being the problem. Gaslighting is outright lying to someone to convince them that something that is happening, isn't.

    I have been looking up and trying to define what gaslighting is. This is by far the best video I've found and I actually understand what the hell gaslighting is. My only question is why did I have to watch 19 other videos before I got to this one? lol.

    Yes . I’m in my mid life and had the same social network of people I’ve known here locally since grade school gaslight me for 30 years. They have tried to get people to ask me out for coffee pretending to be my friend - but are looking for personal information to add into a running smear campaign. Asked people to gaslight me when I was in college. Always try to find out who I’m friends with and dating to do the same. A weird blacklist from their social group. I have no idea why. It turned very malevolent over the years.

Because often in debates whenever the person seems to have found their own arguments contradictions or realize they’re in over their head they say they’re being gaslit.

  • @him050
    @him050 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The problem with the term is that it's been manipulated by high maintenance people to be pulled out during any argument when the other person suggests they're being unreasonable or irrational. Like you won't send a good night text one night, they'll get all funny about it, you apologise but suggest that they're being a bit silly getting so upset over something so minor and they'll say "don't gaslight me. I'm not the problem here. Just because I want to know my boyfriend is thinking about me!" That's not gaslighting. That's a difference in opinion over something. The examples matey boy here gave are gaslighting. They are completely different things.

    You mentioned politics. It's become so ubiquitous in politics and many other fields that most people don't even recognise it as such, even moreso in relationships.
    As for the play, there was actually also two movies made around the same time. The 1944 film with Ingrid Bergman, but also a British version in 1940, which I personally think is superior to the 1944 movie. Probably not as well known as most probably haven't heard of Anton Walbrook and Diana Wynyard.

    Okay this is not what I'm looking for so can someone help me find help when looking for what to do when people say and do things because they think you're a bad person so they expect you to say and do negative or hateful things but you're not the person they think you are and you don't know what to call it..... I would like to know what that is called so I can pinpoint it so I can describe it to other people because it's almost impossible to do. When someone says something to you knowing the answer to it already expecting you to speak in a hateful or disrespectful way but that's not who you are.....what is that called?
    Technically it's not gaslighting so I just want to know what to call it so I can describe it when I'm telling someone else about it please!
    I mean obviously they're attempting to get a specific response out of me but it's apparent that thet are expecting a negative or disrespectful response from me. I assume in order to speak ill of me later or behind my back.
    Which unfortunately seem to be a perfectly normal thing in their click or group or minds. Which i find very discouraging towards me and anyone else they're done it to. It infuriates me to be honest & i tend to beat myself up more than anything else because i know it's going on & i continue to allow it to happen. knowing im constantly being referred to in a negative way when I'm not present.
    What exactly is this called? What do i call this when attempting to describe it????

    I think it's a term that's over and incorrectly used by redditors. My wife accused me of gaslighting last night which is why I'm here. She accused me of stealing the majority of our bed covers while we were sleeping. I smiled and said "nope, I woke up and you had most of the covers!". In my mind I was being playful. I had zero intentions of being malicious. I'm not a psychopathic narcissist trying to make her feel crazy. I simply woke up and she had some of the covers, so I jokingly accused her of being the one who stole them. I was smiling because I thought it was obvious that I wasn't being serious. Real talk, could this really be considered mental abuse? I've already apologized for making her feel this way, but deep down I wonder if this really was gaslighting. I feel like actual gaslighting would be toxic, like purposely making your wife question her mental health by constantly hiding her car keys or something (which I would never, ever do).

  • @derekwestcott495
    @derekwestcott495 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why do you think 98% of people who use the term misuse it? What most people mean when they say someone is "gaslighting" is that they disagreed with them or criticized them in an area where they believe themselves to be an expert. I understand it actually started as a coloquualism, rather than an officially recognized clinical term, so one can argue it doesn't matter if you misuse use it, just like it doesn't if you misuse "cool" or "riz." Despite this fact, it actually has been coopted by official clinical studies such as Barton and Whitehead, 1969 and attributing someone critically analyzing a work or idea you put out into the world to engaging in malicious psychological abuse is reprehensible and that is what MOST people do with this term.
