The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of [North and South] America acquired the Shrine property in the 1960's to honor the Greeks who were brought to the U.S. by British Andrew Turnbull as Indentured Servants. The Holy Archdiocese intendended a Byzantine style chapel but St. Augustine's zoneing prohibited an exterior which was not consistant with the 18th century architecture. However, the interior, thankfully, did not so require. The Holy Table (Altar) was donated by Archbishop Iakovos of America, Primate 1959-1996, in memory of his mother.
