There is a very interesting story behind this song. Raaja sir was unwell and hospitalized when this song needed to be finished. He could not speak during the time he was in hospital. So he composed this song from his hospital bed and whistled the entire tune that his assistants noted down and the song was recorded in the studio by his assistants. This is an all time cult classic song.
Yes. Ilaiyaraaja shared this story himself at his concert in Sydney when SPB Charan rendered this classic.
Charan choked to tears when he sang the lines என்னை நான் தேடித்தேடி உன்னிடம் கண்டு கொண்டேன் and stopped singing, overcome by emotions of his father.

This is peak SPB. I would contend that even SPB himself could not have reproduced this performance later in his career with as much precision, fluidity and ease. Those are the objective aspects but the texture of his voice is also at his best in this song (which is a subjective opinion). Other songs close to 'peak SPB' IMO are:
