Pilipinos are aware that colonization have advantages and disadvantages. So, Pilipinos don't hold grudges against Spain and US. But, we strongly hold to the saying: "We forgive; but, never forget!"

Philippines was under Spain even longer 333 years than Mexico did 300 years. Spanish was official language of the Philippines until 1987. So just 30 years ago Spanish was an official language of the Philippines. Although it is no longer an official language. 30 percent of our words are influenced by Spanish.

In 1840's the Spain required the Filipinos to have a Spanish family names listed in the Catalogo Alfabetico de Apellidos. But many natives retained their filipino native family names like my family name Dimaculangan (wealthy), Pangilinan (the untouchable), Bituon (star), Ahak (crazy), etc.

Spanish was demolished on our curiculum in a year 1980's i guess... It was english being pursued by the government to be learned from primary to college.. though Spanish has a lots of parts in our language ... Our language is already mixed with different foreign language thats why some tagalog words are rarely spoken but instead we used to used some spanish and english words its difficult for us to speak fluently in tagalog cuz we are not used to used that anymore like numbers we are used to used spanish and english wirds but not tagalog...

well, during my mother's time. there's still a lot more Filipinos that spoke Spanish. Umm, I think Fernando de Magallanes expedition was just to search land for Spain. It was only after few more expeditions and 44 years later that Spain decided to colonize the Philippines. And it was only several expeditions later that the country was given the name Philippines or Las Islas de Filipinas.

We were not consider filipinos by spanish conquerors at that time. Filipinos are for those w/ spanish blood. We were called indios by the conquistadores. In 1800's when España was under the French Empire that conquistadores knew "egalite, fraternite, liberte"😃✌

It's all in the past. What matters to me, personally, is the fact that I would not have been introduced to Jesus Christ had Spain not conquered us. So in a way, I am still thankful it happened. It might not have been in the most ideal circumstances, but I guess it probably was God's way of reaching out to us.

Spain did many good things for the Philippines. Religion, culture, united administration, and many more. Of couree, everything has a bad side like oppression, bad habits like coming in late and being lazy, and many more. But we shluld not that the Philippines wouldnt be what it is if not for Spain.
