It would be nice if you would make a video of docks for the ROG ALLY. Ideally it would be one that can charge it at max, have all the IO needed, and maybe even a cooling fan (dont know if that could help the performance)
Amazing review, thank you! I'm thinking the ROG Ally is going to sit next to the family TV and will be our shared "TV PC" that we will also be able to grab & play along. I really appreciate your review because on a 65" 4K TV, 1080p instead of 800p does make a big difference in both desktop & games. I'm just gonna grab a Microsoft AIO Media Keyboard, and 8BitDo Ultimate Controller & we'll be set!
The Ally is a step up in performance compared to the steam deck but asus have some pretty bad business practices that can ruin that awesome handle. I hope that asus give the right support to the customer that bought a Ally. Good luck friends.
Regarding what was said at 9:45, I don't think using modern upscaling technologies "negates" being at 4K. Look at Digital Foundry's "How Is Path Tracing Possible on a Triple-A Game?" video starting at 13:31. I would rather be using FSR to get to 4K rather than just resizing a 1440p image to 4K. Obviously native 4K would be better than either form of upscaling.
Steam Deck fanboy here. I for one welcome the competition that will make the Steam Deck 2 the best and last handheld made by Valve. (number 3 doesn't exist for Valve remember?)
This is the video I've been looking for! I'm currently playing on old gen xbox and this is a big step up considering the alternative is a series x and I dont exactly need all the power it provides. I love game pass and wouldnt give it up to play on steam deck and I need a new laptop. This is everything I could have asked for at the price and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on one! 😊
I will never understand why Valve has not done the same with the Steam Deck! I have been waiting for a year for them to develop something like this. 15 watts is way too low. Many of the games that struggle on the Steamdeck could benefit from a mode like this.
It doesn't scale well on the deck at all, there are mods that allow you to push the TDP up as far as 30 watts but beyond the cooling being too inadequate it just doesn't get nearly as much performance out of the extra watts.
@@ALmaN11223344 If the cooling solution is not designed then that's even worse because it probably confirms that it will never happen. Very disappointing news. I was already considering the Ally, so it might just go ahead and pre order it. Thanks 👍🏽

I Don't get why ETA prime is always worried of going below 60fps especially in single player titles . 35-45 fps is playable for single player games, man. VRR can improve the experience at this refresh range. you're not competing in a $100K tournament. Crank up the settings, show us what's it like for handhelds to run games at high or ultra, even if we're talking between 30 to 45 fps
Yeah it is kind of saddening that he doesn’t care to do that, I think that he should definitely go more in depth with different settings he tries out even if it does cause him to go lower in terms of FPS than what he would prefer. Lots of people play regularly at 30 FPS and he needs to accommodate the benchmarks in that area
yeah 30fps high -ultra is extremely good for a handheld he forgets that 50% of steamdeck users used to be switch owners and we’re perfectly adjusted to 30fps looking smooth
Would love to see performance on triple A games using med settings/FSR since I believe it will be a good use case since it has a 1080p screen vs steam deck.
This is great. I've got an external monitor that only goes upto 1080p, so it should be a good gaming-console-esque for PC. I've jumped ship to Macbook since both of my older gaming laptops burned out, so this will let me get back into Windows PC gaming without having to shell out 1K+.
I'd like to see a dock for these with not only a GPU, but also additional storage. The way I see it, if certain games require a high powered GPU to play well, I'd like to same room on my handheld and have them installed on the dock itself. Not only that, but if I am going to use this as an actual PC, I'd want all of my non-gaming stuff on the dock so if someone swipes my handheld, they don't get all of my critical work stuff.
Asus support emailed back to confirm, that they do NOT recommend using it in docked mode too much, as it will deteriorate the system faster than intended. This came from ASUS official support, email them yourself
Hi, great video. One question based on your experience. I want to use it the same way as you - mostly as a low mid gaming pc for everyday use/gaming. Do you think having the Ally for many hours connected with this dock will affect the battery? I know that laptops that are always on power with the battery lose capacity with time. Your opinion?
Working from home past 3.5 yrs, laptop is permanently plugged in & battery still holds 100%. The lenovo I use has battery protection management which charges the battery to 95 during summer and 99% in winter (upto 100%), then holds it. It keeps topping up those cells so overtime the battery will lose capacity down to about 95% after 3 to 5 yrs of daily (12hrs+) constant use.
Your battery actually dies a lot quicker with constant discharge and recharge cycles. So in the Rog Ally's case, you are likely to see the battery die much quicker if you dock/undock then to have it mostly docked all the time.
@@KiriakosTse82 It might not be too bad - you may own a 3DS or a Vita and they last 10+ years. Most handheld systems are built a little differently - I think the ROG will be fine for 5 years or more. It's a PC so you may want to upgrade by then. I have enough handhelds and unplayed games, but I'm tempted to pickup this one... :) Good luck bud, let us know if you get one.
Just make laptops and put those Z1 extreme chips inside so we get cheap gaming laptops. If they want they can probably build laptop under 1000$ that can run about everything in very good settings and resolution.
So the Ally can "just" about suffice as a docked desktop even without the XG Mobile GPU... I've pre-ordered as I spend a lot of time travelling to and from work but intriguing that it can potentially replace my desktop which has been neglected on upgrades as of late.
I've actually tested this with several docks and chargers and it's in fact just a bug in the firmware, it's still pulling 20v and running in the 30W turbo mode even though it displays 25W turbo mode. You can compare yourself, the numbers are all the same, throw the device in true 25W mode and you'll see it's not even comparable.
Thanks for video, quite good performance for docked mode, can you please compare it to some budget GPUs to see where does it stand? Like gtx 1650, 1060, rx 470...
From the benchmarks I've seen so far (take this with a grain of salt) It is between 1050Ti and GTX1060 3GB But I dunno about the real world scenario yet and after further updates it might get better optimizations.
So cool. I feel like we are only one gen away from me switching to this gaming PC set up. I just hope the lifespan of these could average around 4 years.
@@YouGotTheL tbf, that external GPU is actual made for their ultra books/tablets, so id imagine that people that own those are more likely to buy the GPUs for work, for those people if they also buy an ally it's a good companion product
@@M419.99 from what I heard they didn't support thunderbolt because it doesn't have sufficient bandwidth to really take advantage of the GPUs, the proprietary XG is akin to a PCI-E connecter which provides closer to the full performance of the chip. What they need to do is make an enclosure we can buy with that connector so we don't have to rely on laptop chips.
I love the performance, the issue i have is it being made by asus ... They aren't bad but yeah, i had a couple asus laptop which were crapping themself after a while, and the recent motherboard issue is :/ I do hope we see an handheld from microsoft themselves, they got the hardware now, they have the know how, and they have a pretty nice stance on repairability (which the steam deck does insanely well, i just need a tad bit more power to replace completely my gaming pc)
They don't have any reason to do so. Every handheld aside from the steam deck runs Windows and can use GamePass, which is already a good thing for them. Making a handheld themselves would mean they would have to find a way to price it competitively
Oh wow, after seeing this video by ETAPrime, this really made me think that this is much a better value than buying a Mini PC. I just wonder if you could disable the charging of the ROG Ally when it is plugged in to save the battery life. Man, I also wish ASUS could also release a better dock with the same form factor as Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck's that also use their whole proprietary port. Maybe it could give you at least three more USB ports, at least two display ports, and an ethernet port for a budget oriented person. Maybe it could cost under $150 idk. At least, we got people have another option who couldn't afford that XG Mobile module. Hmmm... I'm not sure if possible but I don't mind if the dock has some cooling mechanism that could also help ROG Ally to cool as well when docked just to be sure it won't overheat overtime.
once the battery is charged, it doesnt keep charging the battery. it goes into a passthrough mode, and bypasses the battery. there is no issue whatsoever with playing with it plugged in 100% of the time if thats what you want.
Don't hope for a cheap docking option from ASUS since the XG Mobile is their main upsell. Just get a regular dock or a usb-c monitor. And while I wouldn't worry about the cooling system during heavy load, I would wait to see the actual reliability of the hardware from early adopters. ASUS is the kind of company that would sell you shit hardware if you are not careful.
I'm very curious to see if these new APUs are capable of using curve optimizer, undervolting potential is likely limited, but any power savings could potentially mean more performance on the go. Same goes for the GPU/SOC voltage, I'm sure some extra clock speed could be extracted in power limited scenarios if undervolting is allowed.
Yeh i have been trying to get any of these reviewers to address Undervolting with these Phoenix Apu's.. It's possible AATU (Amd Apu Tuning Utility) would be able to undervolt them like they are able to with zen 4 Dragon Range mobile cpu's.. If you guys get an answer let us know, whether its for the 7840u or the Z1 Extreme.
I would like to know as well. When looking into it for laptops, I was told you need HDMI output and input for VRR to work. VRR from USBC can only work with DisplayPort when alt mode is enabled.
Do you plan on doing any testing with the XG Mobile external GPUs? Thinking about going all in but was wondering how that performs overall with the Ally. Perhaps you could do testing with the 6850M XT model? I think that’s the best bang for you buck as it just got a price reduction. Would love to see your thoughts. Please consider! Subscribed!
need more competitors for this handheld so that this spec become more cheaper soon. glad that this handheld project become bigger and more company with adapt with this soon. we need to thanking Steamdeck for starting this
Given the problems Asus has had recently with their new motherboards, I foresee the Ally being plagued with hardware problems. Which is unfortunate because the Steam deck needs more real competition, like the Ally, for the full size handheld market to blossom.
Stop acting like omg asus is facing problems with motherboards hence they are a faiiliure already.valve is one of those brands who launch 10 products out of which 2 get succesfull
Steam deck needs no competetion. Valve is losing money on it. They bet on people using steam by buying the steam deck. However unlike any other consoles they don't force you to use steam at all. If you were to buy all steam decks install windows and never use steam valve would go bankrupt if they didn't find a solution against that.
Which XG Mobile dock are you going to test this with? I received notification from the Asus store this morning that the 4090 variant was available again briefly but i waited because im not sure if its worth the money difference between that and the other two versions that are currently out from last year. Also, is there any information on when the accessories will be available for purchase for this?

If they keep the price when realese its gonna be a game changer. (sorry for my english jejej!!)
Gaming laptops under 1k, yeah I can see that but there are some that can easily run games far more easier then this system so far from what I've seen. He's constantly putting things in low setting, playable yes but kind of annoying if you wanted to push the gaming or videos you're watching.
I would love to see this soc or the slightly weaker one in like an 11 inch or 13 inch "cheap" laptop body with an above avg screen. Like the hp stream body but with a better screen lol
I was debating if I should cancel my pre-order since I already have a laptop and steam deck that I dock to my living room tv from time to time. If this can run games at 1440p 30-60fps then I think I may have found a living room gaming machine.
Asus Rog ally this, Rog Ally that. What difference does it make if it's another 900/1000 pounds handheld? The steam deck is 399. That's all that matters because both can't reach the level of a proper gaming pc. But at least the steam deck is way cheaper and supports steam libraries approved
True, this is mostly for tech enthusiasts with good money. But the handheld market being brought to the masses and being picked up and worked on by big tech means that Steam Deck 2 is probably gonna be a banger
took me a few minutes on reading about the ROG charging dock, only to realize this can also be done with cheap USB-C dongle with HDMI 2.0 albeit without a charger built-in.😅
That cheap dongle won’t provide power at 65W. So it can’t maintain that performance at 30W or above. You need a 65W charger to maintain that performance
I'm excited. I hope I didn't make a mistake pre-ordering. I have a high end gaming pc, consoles, and logitech g cloud. The logitech g cloud has been great, but now I wanted to play pc games to play on tv. Will this dock work with Nintendo Switch? The reason why I ask is because Nintendo are quite finicky about non-firsts party accessories, and especially docks and things that inlcude actual charging. Afraid it's gonna end up bricking it, lol. Would be great for portability purposes!

the performance is pretty impressive for a handheld system, this might just be the future of PC gaming, I can totally see a 25" monitor with retractable stand in a portable case with these handheld systems.

It’s a standard protocol. If you get a decent dock you won’t have any issues.
There is other 3rd party 65W dock options available rn

If you buy the XG doc please buy the low end 799 one with the amd gpu. I think that's the one most would buy.
Someday I'll comeback to this video just to remind my self I was once dreaming to have this ally and by that time I will have my own. 🙏
It would be nice if you would make a video of docks for the ROG ALLY. Ideally it would be one that can charge it at max, have all the IO needed, and maybe even a cooling fan (dont know if that could help the performance)
This is great! Would love to see how it performs with the XG Mobile 4090 to see if the CPU is a bottleneck or not. This thing looks insane so far!
At 4k almost not bottleneck
Also super interested in seeing tgis
With the check mobile it would be a killer console
Agree I was thinking this, because if yes, then we could take a look at the RTX 3080 version
Family gaming FTW 😀
This thing is a freaking beast wow!
Almost as fast as my rx470 i bought for 50 euro 5 years ago, not bad for a mobile device.
As good if not better than my old FX8350, GTX970 build! It's unreal. I plan on replacing that old rig with one of these
@@budgetking2591 that would mean that gpu is 10 times as fast as the steam deck
Steam Deck fanboy here. I for one welcome the competition that will make the Steam Deck 2 the best and last handheld made by Valve. (number 3 doesn't exist for Valve remember?)
Nah man, there's always gonna be more
Edit: Steam deck 2, then Steam deck 2 EP 1, etc.
Chuckled....
You are referring to half life 3?
This is the video I've been looking for! I'm currently playing on old gen xbox and this is a big step up considering the alternative is a series x and I dont exactly need all the power it provides. I love game pass and wouldnt give it up to play on steam deck and I need a new laptop. This is everything I could have asked for at the price and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on one! 😊
Thats true this generations console power have not been utilized in the way last gen did, you dont need all that power to run the current gen games
Thanks 👍🏽
@@J.A.Z-TheMortal Yeah and you are gonna have to move to Linux in 3 years or so because ASUS is gonna abbandon the support to this thing more likely, they have a flaky support for all their hardware tbh and with the recent debacle I would be careful with going with ASUS.

@@TheDinotz no really it's a window PC which means you just download the drivers and bios etc unless it's a hardware problem
If I manage to get hold of this device I'm definitely getting this dock. This device is very impressive.
Im curious if the bios has some advances functions, like voltage control and ram timings, undervolt it to the lowest stable voltage, then tune all timings to the fastest stable timing, these things would give it an insane performance boost, making it even faster then it already is.
Can you explain why undervolting is good? Isn't everything the higher the better, except for hurting the battery life?
@@M419.99when you undervolt cpu or gpu either of the components will run cooler. Without undervolting you might run into thermal throttling issues especially for handheld basicly lowering the performance. I'm sure there are other benefits too like lower batt consumption etc.

Awesome.
I wonder how Steam OS runs on this thing. Hope that video comes soon :)
Just suggestion, when benchmarking the competitive games, like CS: GO, just keep it on low settings, because we don't need great graphic for it.
I'm not sure VRR will work through USBC out with that power adapter. Doubt it will with HDMI but maybe using Displayport.
yeah 30fps high -ultra is extremely good for a handheld he forgets that 50% of steamdeck users used to be switch owners and we’re perfectly adjusted to 30fps looking smooth
I appreciate you in dept review in docked mode, cheers!!
Would love to see performance on triple A games using med settings/FSR since I believe it will be a good use case since it has a 1080p screen vs steam deck.
Steam deck ain’t even comparable to the rog ally.
This is great. I've got an external monitor that only goes upto 1080p, so it should be a good gaming-console-esque for PC. I've jumped ship to Macbook since both of my older gaming laptops burned out, so this will let me get back into Windows PC gaming without having to shell out 1K+.
Kinda desktop replacement. Who wants light gaming, light work, light editing. This is more than enough.
I'd like to see a dock for these with not only a GPU, but also additional storage.
The way I see it, if certain games require a high powered GPU to play well, I'd like to same room on my handheld and have them installed on the dock itself.
Not only that, but if I am going to use this as an actual PC, I'd want all of my non-gaming stuff on the dock so if someone swipes my handheld, they don't get all of my critical work stuff.
so like the jsaux m.2 dock?
@@Cz82 No, that doesn't have an external GPU in it. I want an external GPU dock that also has storage.

God bless TH-camrs that use chapters on their videos'
So as i will also use it as a handlehend then yeap battery will die. Food for thought for me as battery isnt replaceable
@@iftea7 i already pre-order it so yes i am 😏
That Nintendo Switch 2 prototype looks awesome.
TOOO AWESOME I am totally gonna grab one later this summer. :)
From the benchmarks I've seen so far (take this with a grain of salt)
It is between 1050Ti and GTX1060 3GB
But I dunno about the real world scenario yet and after further updates it might get better optimizations.
Even absurdly 30fps feels like it's higher. It's so soft I like it.
I would have really valued if you could have shown the temperatures. Curious to know if it heats like a laptop or runs cooler
So cool. I feel like we are only one gen away from me switching to this gaming PC set up. I just hope the lifespan of these could average around 4 years.
Great video. Eagerly waiting for an external GPU test, the amd 6850 I think makes the most sense. 4090 is too much lol
I was like who's gonna buy that? $1500 can build you a whole pc
@@YouGotTheL tbf, that external GPU is actual made for their ultra books/tablets, so id imagine that people that own those are more likely to buy the GPUs for work, for those people if they also buy an ally it's a good companion product

Too bad ROG Ally doesn't support Thunderbolt eGPU, just their proprietary XG Mobile solution
I preordered, can’t wait :) I have to learn all these computer terms since this will be my first sorta pc gaming thing

Yes and smash ultimate
Nintendo will strick his video down for emulating on TH-cam. The ROG ALLY can play totk easily at 15 watts full speed.
I would love to see this thing working at 1080p high settings, and see how much fps we can gain.
Same. 4k with only low settings really doesn't mean a whole lot to me. 1080p high and 1440p med is cream of the crop
Same here.
I guess he is only focus on 60fps
I love the performance, the issue i have is it being made by asus ... They aren't bad but yeah, i had a couple asus laptop which were crapping themself after a while, and the recent motherboard issue is :/
I do hope we see an handheld from microsoft themselves, they got the hardware now, they have the know how, and they have a pretty nice stance on repairability (which the steam deck does insanely well, i just need a tad bit more power to replace completely my gaming pc)
They don't have any reason to do so. Every handheld aside from the steam deck runs Windows and can use GamePass, which is already a good thing for them. Making a handheld themselves would mean they would have to find a way to price it competitively
Wow! Amazing device. Thanks for the video.
I would love to see these tests done again with the new updates and increase in performance.
Undervolting the real MVP.
This is awesome for people who want a PC but don’t have the money to build or buy an actual PC. I can see these selling!
Looks like it could be a good machine for digital art on a separate Pen Display with that 4k out capability.
Please don't, it only has 16gb of ram. Would become a problem in the long run

It's a shame we're not going to see this kind of performance on am5 desktop APUs anytime soon.

Can you test Freesync in the dock on the external monitor? With HDMI for audio and video with free sync?
I would like to know as well. When looking into it for laptops, I was told you need HDMI output and input for VRR to work. VRR from USBC can only work with DisplayPort when alt mode is enabled.

Do you plan on doing any testing with the XG Mobile external GPUs? Thinking about going all in but was wondering how that performs overall with the Ally. need more competitors for this handheld so that this spec become more cheaper soon. glad that this handheld project become bigger and more company with adapt with this soon. we need to thanking Steamdeck for starting this
Given the problems Asus has had recently with their new motherboards, I foresee the Ally being plagued with hardware problems.
Yes how unfortunate something that hasnt even happened. All hail this fortune teller. What stock should i invest in since you know the future bro
Does the power do pass-through without cycling the battery?
So here’s a question does vrr/hdr work with the hub? Is it hdmi 2.1? 4K with upsclaing vs 1080/1440 p native in terms of iq / performance?
Which XG Mobile dock are you going to test this with? I received notification from the Asus store this morning that the 4090 variant was available again briefly but i waited because im not sure if its worth the money difference between that and the other two versions that are currently out from last year. If they keep the price when realese its gonna be a game changer. (sorry for my english jejej!!)
Would love to see what the performance increase is compared to your other videos on the Ally when it’s docked at 1080p.
This is what makes me believe that this device is more like a gaming laptop than a handheld console.
How long would you comfortably play without fear of messing up the battery? Also is the eGPU worth it over just plugging it in like this?
I was debating if I should cancel my pre-order since I already have a laptop and steam deck that I dock to my living room tv from time to time. If this can run games at 1440p 30-60fps then I think I may have found a living room gaming machine.

Asus Rog ally this, Rog Ally that. What difference does it make if it's another 900/1000 pounds handheld? The steam deck is 399. That's all that matters because both can't reach the level of a proper gaming pc. But at least the steam deck is way cheaper and supports steam libraries approved
True, this is mostly for tech enthusiasts with good money. But the handheld market being brought to the masses and being picked up and worked on by big tech means that Steam Deck 2 is probably gonna be a banger

took me a few minutes on reading about the ROG charging dock, only to realize this can also be done with cheap USB-C dongle with HDMI 2.0 albeit without a charger built-in.😅
No u cannot
That cheap dongle won’t provide power at 65W. So it can’t maintain that performance at 30W or above. You need a 65W charger to maintain that performance
I'm just worried about customer support after seeing all the negative on youtube with Asus if something goes wrong with the Ally
