    Man this thing is amazing. On paper it's slightly limited compared to other Semi-modulars, but if you get creative it's an endless stream of strangeness. Can't decide whether to get the Crave (combines well with my Neutron) or this one. So much amazing gear has been released recently!

    The inverse tracking of function generator- as KEY CV increases, time increases. Time is wave period- shorter period equals higher pitch. You need to invert KEY CV so TIME decreases as KEY increases. The A-BXC utility might work if there is a patch point to get a constant CV, like 5V for the top of the KEY range. Great videos- Korg has packed an awful lot into this unit.

    This is extremely helpful, thank you! Until now I've been mindlessly patching random inputs and outputs (knowing generally what they do but not always knowing how it will affect the overall patch) until I have 15 or all 20 patch cables and some crazy sound I never expected. Honestly, I tend to do the same thing on every patch, which is plug both the woggle noise outputs into the split, then randomize as much as possible and make the craziest, weirdest sound possible.
    This video inspires me to be more mindful and efficient with my patches. Though I'll always remember the metal blade/train chugging sound I somehow made a couple of weeks ago from the random patching, among many others haha.

    Great demo of the tools! What is the maximum semitone range of the keyboard? 16 + 12 + 12= 40? Or is there more range for the primary oscillator? Perhaps a demo of the external dual CV in would be good to see next?

    • @Longuncattr
      @Longuncattr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The manual says the CV In jack takes two signals on the tip and ring of a stereo audio plug. The tip signal is bipolar, accepting anything from -5V to +5V, which then gets scaled down -3.3V to +3.3V. The ring signal is unipolar and is a 1V/Oct pitch CV in the range of 0V to +6V. You could apply either of them to the oscillator, to go over three octaves lower than the lowest note up to six octaves higher than the highest note.

      I think a non quantized sequencer like the Rakit Baby 8 or an SQ-1 would be a better sequencer for this Volca as you can just feed it any voltage instead of just the normal 'proper' 1 volt per octave (I think). It's just a downsize of this Volca Modular sadly.

    How does one sync this to other devices? Like, what I think immediately is how Id connect this to my laptop so it syncs with Ableton and the rest of my tools in there? I figured its very compatible with all the other volcas but is my case a DIY solution needing normally easy one or is there something doable with either the CV or sync inputs? Great reviews/tutorials btw much appreciated!

    • @Decoy303
      @Decoy303 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're gonna have to power down and power back up the way you would to get to your global settings and change the sync type to probably 2ppq or something compatible to your master clock settings.

    Nice video!! Do you know if it would take voltage from the bastle kastl?

    • @mikeexits
      @mikeexits 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've read they use different voltages, so if you want perfect integration you need a converter of some kind. I know nothing about this though.

    • @OttosTheName
      @OttosTheName 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikeexits I have seen jams where they just combine them though. Nothing was frying.
      In Eurorack world pretty much every input can take up to 12 volts just to be safe. Even if it's designed to respond to 0-5 volts. Because not all modules are the same and mistakes happen. I bet this volca can handle 5 volt if it's designed for 3.3 volts. So you probably won't damage anything, but it might not work as intended. It's possible it's not as well protected as Eurorack modules though as it's very compact and protection circuits take space. On the other hand it's also aimed towards starting musicians who are bound to make a mistake. I would be véry surprised if connecting a Kastle to a VModular would damage anything. They would probably get a lot of confused angry customers if they don't have the proper protections. Personally I'd just try it.

    • @mikeexits
      @mikeexits 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OttosTheName I'm aware no frying would happen, but different voltages would lead to unexpected results. The 3.3V outputs wouldn't be able to max out a parameter for a 5V input for example. Thanks for the input

    Korg needs to update the 3 original Volcas to include "Global System Parameter" #8 which is for the "Sync input/output unit". This would allow the entire collection of Volcas to sync to “Once a step” (or 4 PPQN). The added bonus is that when the Volca Drum, Volca Kick, or Volca Sample is used as the master clock, the swing settings will extend to all Volcas in the chain.

    That was excellent- Very good info! Question: is there any way to randomize the sequencer clock tempo? Or make it unpredictable?

  • @GearGuy
    @GearGuy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video...
    I am a big Volca fan...but not so sure about the korg modular though... Patch cables are basically breadboard jumper cables than are hardly durable...and the can easily break off inside a port... which can be very difficult/impossible to remove in some cases. Also, having the patchbay intermixed with the controls puts those wires right in the way of the knobs... making it far too easy to accidentally unplug a cable...and again, having these types of breadboard cables makes that just so much worse since they don’t positively click in like standard 1/8th inch cables.
    Personally, I think adding a 100 bucks and getting a Behringer Model D or a Behringer Neutron would be a much more viable/flexible and capable option...though you’d lose out on the builtin speaker and battery power....which (to me) are two of the coolest points of the Volca line.

    • @OttosTheName
      @OttosTheName 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd also lose out on the built in Reverb and sequencer. And it's a really cool sequencer in my opinion! Reverb is sweet too.
      (I own the Neutron, when it comes to synthesizing it's super powerful, but you do need a Keystep to get the functionality this Volca has, so then it's around 420 euro's or around 400 usd I think.)
      Whatever you pick, either one has a sound of it's own and a lot of bang for the buck. I'd love to own both.
