Some great and useful tips for when I eventually get one! Based on this, I’m going to change the way I connect to the DCS explorer, I’ll just set my tablet to connect only with the device and not my wifi.
Great video. I’m still using the MTH Explorer with an IPad and that’s working out great. Did need a 2nd pad control and took your advice about hitting Walmart for a lower cost Android pad. Picked up a 7 inch for $39.00. It works great with both DCS and the Lionchief application . Thanks for that tip!
I was sweating bullets when my WTIU was updating! I count myself lucky I didn’t have the same problem you had. I thought it broke too when I heard the relays click! I had good success with using an Ethernet cable to get the Home Wi-Fi setting to work.
Great review, I got mine Saturday and it ran fine,Sunday morning it was also doing great, some reason sun afternoon it started acting up I don’t even know where to start telling you, I messed with it Sunday night and Monday finally figured it out by Tuesday 😬don’t know how many times I cussed it , called M.T.H. and hobby shop, found reset button on Wtiu and phone /tablet ,finally got working I think some was me I am not a tech guy ,my no 1 track it want find engine on but can run engine on 🤔no 2 track no issues on no 1 track I lose something bc when train runs it want react to commands, I think something with track ,I have not figured out how to do Lionel or tmcc engines yet,I am hooked up z4000 and then out to tracks I done what u did and got a new tablet just for layout I am hooked up to M.T.H. on Wtiu I am very happy with Wtiu lots of fun I do think they should be more directions and troubleshooting page instead of looking up on internet overall very happy with 👍 😎
Quite interesting, Nick. Even though it think that it is cheap not to offer a smart-phone based controller, that's the way it is, with MTH and Lionel. My problem with the MTH app is that you have to pay extra to unlock all of the features. That is just an insult, considering the price tag on this unit. This was pointed out by Art, on his channel. At least Lionel gives you the whole shebang on the app, for free. Other than that, these new wifi units are making me consider adding command control, to my layout. I'll still remain mostly conventional, but this would add a new dimension to my operations. An excellent tutorial and video, as always.
Yes the Lionel app is free, but the BASE3 costs a lot more than the WTIU (with a $25 premium upgrade) and it doesn't include two powermasters like the WTIU.
Hey, Nick, I have yet to get a WTIU as I am still relying on my TIU which has and continues to work great. I enjoyed your video as I know that one day it will likely be necessary to step up to the WTIU. I am sorry you had to experience such frustration with that first unit, but I'm glad the second unit has worked well. I do appreciate your explaining the difficulties you encountered so that we can learn from them. I too like so many others really enjoy the handheld remote, but I figure I can make the transition to a tablet when the time comes. The WTIU does seem like a substantial improvement over the TIU so I may be going there sooner than I was thinking. Bill B.
I guess I got lucky got mine after waiting about 3 years hooked it up with my IPhone 15 max plus and once it updated the firmware all went well I use my home internet all is well good video
Sorry Nick but is why i won’t ever upgrade and go to the electronics like this. I run conventional and the highest electronic level I run is Lionel Lion Chief with dedicated remotes. This type of hassle is just way too frustrating for me. It turns a relaxing hobby into major dissatisfaction. I am glad you finally were able to figure the situation out! Good luck in the future with the system👍
I have two dcs remotes and had one apart years ago and put a new thumb wheel in it, still have extre thumbwheel😊. I'm picking up my wtiu saturday$385, I think my dealer did me good on it
@@conductorjohnmthtrains2239 very nice enjoy the new unit. My remote works well but definitely eats batteries. The new tablet has a 16 hour battery life. I’m definitely adapting to the new age of tech
@ you , sean and art are the only guys I actually get my tech information from, remember there were hicups when the tiu&wiu came out as well. Looking forward to getting mine saturday, but might wait until the mth usb /serial cord for Legacy base comes out in a month to hook it up
Using a Z1000 by itself to power just the TIU is overkill. Dig through your Junk drawer, find an adapter with 12 to 24 volts (AC or DC), and power the TIU with that. An adapter on eBay can be bought for less than $10 to power a TIU sufficiently.
do you need isolated blocks with two power connections per block to facilitate digital signal? I now have a main buss system with single feeds every 10 feet, thanks
could you do a tutorial on how to set it up? like how hook it up to transfromer because i’m having a struggle how to do that the mth manual doesn’t make since to me
How are you connecting to the wtiu, wps or ethernet?. I went wifi then went to ethernet with the first dcs getup. Either way i have problems getting the wiu to connect to tiu, i have to unplug usb cord between the two to get a tiu light. Pisses me off
@@conductorjohnmthtrains2239 If you’re using a WIU to TIU you’re going to have to update the firmware through the MTH loader program from a windows pc. That might solve these issues.
I was just talking to someone about this today, they said their is something up with the android phone variation in regard to app refresh. I would let MTH customer service know to document the issue
@@williamkolina3988 you had to use a WIU plugged into the TIU previously. The bonus with the WTIU is going to be software uploaded via device/ patches rather than utilizing the DCS loader program. It’s new and will be updated as it progresses
How about an ugly train challenge! Sorta like an ugly sweater challenge. Run stuff that is rare or unusual. Run stuff that has been forgotten for years. Run stuff you absolutely hate!😂😂😂😂
I have a REV. G TIU that I bought new in 2003. While not on the main layout anymore as of 2021, it still gets used regularly throughout the year and works perfectly.

Thanks for watching! Definitely recommend that over using the house Wi-Fi. The connection is so much better. Glad that explorer is working great.

Definitely was a scary experience updating the second time around but it went through correctly this time. Thanks for watching!

So far so good with the dedicated tablet. I do like the interface and it’s alot of fun to use
@@NixCrossingI will pickup a couple of them too. Thanks for the tip Nick! (Frank)

@@NixCrossingYa I use the ipad and love it, mth still has to release two cords for the legacy connection & old remote to be used as well
You're kind of freaking me out! I use apple phone / Ipad, better hook up to home or I'll drink a few beers and try again😡👍😂
@ no worries, I know Sean uses an iPad. I believe my phone has never been a reliable device for dcs

Very cool with the tablet.
I’m using a dedicated mini iPad for my mth app my phone gets to many interruptions thanks good video!

I have a wtiu in my hands 👏
Ok sounds very complicated. I us an older tiu. But I love the Lionel blue tooth and it’s very simple

I have a question. My mth app keeps freezing. My phone is a Galaxie A13 Android. Probably getting somewhat low on space.

@NixCrossing should I try the onn tablet?
Couldn't you use the app with the old unit?
I'm afraid of this thing
Although I have a proto 3 engine.
I just run it conventually
