I first played this on the Atari 2600, so the jumping controls were to be expected, and were very much on par with Donkey Kong at the time. I loved the game at the time, as when you compare it to other Atari 2600 games, it is much closer to the same quality level, if not higher than other games of the time

I was thinking of getting that Atari 5200+ emulator thing that plays 2600 and 5200 carts because it would be fun to show Atari versions of these NES games too. It’s kind of fascinating seeing Mario games on Atari.

@@HydratedGaming It might be worth it. There is a lot of interesting history there, and I haven't really seen anyone talk about it

I believe this game had a revision on the Famicom Disc System originally, and it came with ads for a rice brand (yes really)

I couldn’t sit through that movie for more than 5 minutes. That being said, soundtrack was incredible.

I really don't think the controls are that bad. I do understand why someone might prefer the controls in later revisions, but I think the way they function here does provide an extra layer of fun challenge if you can open your mind to it

I can see that point of view. I just think nowadays this game is best as a pick up and play game, thus it benefits greatly from the easier controls. But back in the day when this came out, the harder controls probably helped players get more out of it as it required more mastery. And there is definitely a feeling of fun that comes with mastering stuff like this.

The fact that this entire review is based on the NES version invalidates it completely. You wouldn't judge Pac-Man by the Atari 2600 version. NES Mario Bros is a similarly poor port. I would go as far as to say you're not really playing Mario Bros unless it's the arcade version.

Huh, never heard that it was a bad port, interesting. I’ll have to try the Arcade one. Are the controls a lot better? Like I said in the video, I really like the remakes that came out later which fixed the controls. I just don’t like the NES version, so I think we agree!

@@HydratedGaming Don't listen to him. It was a mostly accurate port just like Donkey Kong was. I mean it came out 3 years later and the NES was powerful enough to recreate those early Nintendo arcade games fairly accurately like they did Donkey Kong.
His comparison of Arcade Pac Man vs 2600 is also way off. A more Apt comparison would be playing Mario Bros on the 2600. The NES had enough power to recreat Pacman just as it did DK and Mario Bros.
Even the game reviewed well when it was a time arcade ports to home systems were usually awful. The NES was the first time you started seeing great ports of old arcade games. The game basically plays the same...
Actually if I wanted to be a total snob... "You didn't get the full Mario Bros experience because you didn't play it in an arcade with a joystick and having to put coins in a machine !!1"
