Hey, I bought the exact unit from the seller you did after watching this a while ago. Unfortunately for me it has been an absolute nightmare. Unit randomly decides for days when it will or won't work. All I'll hear is the tick when holding menu then a black screen. Trying to reset with holding back does the same. Then a few days later I'll hop in the car and it will work ... for a day or two. Shame because it's great when it does work.
@@Doobrey In a turn of events appears it was a firmware issue. Been a week now and the unit works wonderfully. I was confident it was hardware related. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of these units. Makes a huge difference on the commute.
No, once you have configured it once, you get into the car and "bang" it connects. We often connect the USB too, just to power the phone, but it is not required
It seems that when you switch between iDrive / MMI the display (sometimes) becomes first black and then after a few seconds shows the MMI / iDrive screen. I have exact the same problem with my F30 equipped with CHAMP2/6.5" display as yours.
I’ve come across issue where my display screen will just blank out randomly, then automatically just appear after 20- 30mins or so, wasn’t experiencing this before the retrofit Any advise on this?? It’s happened 2twice in the space of a months so far
Hi. What happens if the radio is playing and then car play/android auto is activated, do you lose audio from the radio? Can you have factory radio playing while google maps is working via Android auto? Many thanks @doobrey
It does btw just fixed this in my car, didn’t have to install the mic or the aux cable, calls and everything works fine. I believe he had to install the Mic/ aux because he did not switch the optical cable from the originally harness to the new harness provided. Wireless and wired connections works a perfect
@Kevin Budain I believe the same retrofit will still work fine, as I have parking sensors with all functions working perfect when the car is placed into reverse (display Screen automatically switches to the sensors with sound whilst the CarPlay is in use)
Depending on what you use, works the same as the app. For example, Google maps, you can either type in the address or use Siri to speak the address. Tomtom, which is also available, works the same as any other tomtom. Apple maps, to be honest, I have used the least. The maps is one of the main reasons we did this, as it saves on paying BMW for new maps each year. Let's be honest, the BMW in car nav is pretty rubbish. This system is pretty awesome!
Is it possible to connect Bluetooth from phone directly to the stock head unit so that you can still have the high quality audio rather than aux, but still use the wireless CarPlay through the WiFi?
I think so..... the problem I had was that the head unit wouldn't connect to the newer iphones, this is what drove us to look at retrofit solutions. The sound is fine from the Aux, not 100% perfect but considering everything else you get... The carplay works wirelessly onto the unit, once its connected !! pretty cool!
Doobrey I’m still looking into it, thanks for the reply. One more thing tho, does it have a spare AV input in the wiring harness that you would plug the front/rear camera into? I’m thinking of also installing a 360 camera recorder that has AV output so I think it may be able to plug into the CarPlay box and display on screen
I have a Bmw F20 just like yours, with the same Apple CarPlay installed, but mine will not allow to use my original microphone. I want to use the voice control to control the Unit at times and when receiving calls i have to switch to the bmw Bluetooth and not ude CarPlay. Do you have an idea for what the mistake could be? :/
Probably you have not connected the cable from the unit to your mic. It runs down the pillar on the right hand side of your car. Remove the cover, find your mix, connect the new cable from the unit to it and it should work
Hey any chance of a link to where I can buy one. Have you had any more problems? Does this also let you use your maps such as google maps or Apple maps? Thanks
I "thought" it was in the description. If not, let met know. Yes, you can use google maps, apple maps, make calls, use Siri, play your apple music....pretty impressive stuff. I originally had a few problems, with a wire getting snagged, but since then, I dropped it into the space behind the head unit and down, tidied up the cables and Bang, no more issues!
Loved the video I’m thinking of getting one myself now, just wondering if it would fit/work in a BMW 116D 2013 I’m assuming it would but always best to make sure first.

Hi, not really. I know I’d have to do a bit of coding, which is quite straight forward, however I just wanted to make sure the retrofit would work initially. I may replace the screen in the coming months too :)
This is exactly what I have been looking at. I have a 2011 so think I'd need the same install. Just wondered if the Bluetooth calling worked as standard still rather than having to use the added mic? As you still retain original functionality don't you.

Hi there, thanks for the video - just wanted to ask if you had to keep the aux lead plugged in to the aux socket on the car in order for the system to play sound? My aux socket is quite crackly and would be a deal breaker if i had to keep the lead in? Cheers
Hey Man! Two questions, you had micro in box or how you connect it to the car play module, and the second question is about aux cable, you have to connect it to the AUX on armrest or somewhere else?
Whats it like with steering wheel controls? For some reason on my F21 I can't skip tracks using the steering wheel on the factory bluetooth, curious if you can skip tracks using them via Carplay.
Hey Man, I just ordered this for my F22 car but and i wanted to ask you some questions. Any way we can chit chat through facetime or whatsapp or something ?
Ive installed this on my F20, i swear to god the sound quality is absolute dogshit. Even when using the unit’s EQ, you dont get away from the fact that it sounds like oldschool FM radio.
@@aeroeng3 depends on how sensitive you are to audio quality dude. The seller of the carplay box disclaimed that “since its an additional line to the audio and since its wireless it will never achieve the same audio quality as the OEM headunit but it shouldnt be easily noticeable”. But honestly, for me the difference in audio quality was easily audible. So i decided to plug in using the AUX port provided in the cables, still the quality is just as crap as it is when done wirelessly. To me, its like listening to music with your head inside a fishbowl. Theres a small amount of “wosh” to the sound output and the bass it very sensitive. Theres no other way to describe it other than if you played music through a cheap chinese stereo with as little mid range, some treble then put the bass on max. Sellers dont get this kind of review from their buyers, likely because straight after installing, the buyers leave not getting enough time to work with the unit to realise how much difference there is in audio quality coz theyre too distracted by the new navigation and carplay capabilities of their car. Leaving them to realise later how crap the audio is but no longer able to take it back for a refund coz theres no better alternative.
@@GoneDeathMode ok if you go wired the same? Cause i don't mind to be wired instead of wireless. If it uses the Aux and the phone wired it shouldn't have so huge sound quality issues . Yes I'm a bit sensitive, I'm not gonna play Flac files at my Bmw speakers, but if it sounds crap , it will be a problem, I'm using spotify btw
@@aeroeng3 yeh it didnt matter whether it was wired or wireless to be honest. The sound quality was limited either way. It just doesnt achieve the full potential of the speakers. As a compromise, ive opted to only use music from my phone (through carplay) whenever i absolutely need the navigation audio cues, otherwise, my car’s audio setting is always set to USB music with my songs downloaded to a USB drive which is really the only way you can get decent audio otherwise. Note that when the carplay unit is installed, your OEM AUX port in the armrest is not usable as its overridden by the carplay unit. So if youre thinking of plugging the phone there while using carplay, it doesnt get you any sound.

Shame because it's great when it does work.
sorry to hear this, i would go back to the seller and ask them for a replacement, ine has been fine!
@@Doobrey In a turn of events appears it was a firmware issue. Been a week now and the unit works wonderfully. I was confident it was hardware related. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of these units. Makes a huge difference on the commute.
Do each time you sit in the car you have to connect via Bluetooth and wifi to use CarPlay?
No, once you have configured it once, you get into the car and "bang" it connects. We often connect the USB too, just to power the phone, but it is not required
Is this works with BMW 116d 2014 sport line?
could you send a link to microphone cable please??
It seems that when you switch between iDrive / MMI the display (sometimes) becomes first black and then after a few seconds shows the MMI / iDrive screen. I have exact the same problem with my F30 equipped with CHAMP2/6.5" display as yours.
I’ve come across issue where my display screen will just blank out randomly, then automatically just appear after 20- 30mins or so, wasn’t experiencing this before the retrofit Any advise on this?? It’s happened 2twice in the space of a months so far
Check where you placed the unit. Is it getting too hot?
Hi. What happens if the radio is playing and then car play/android auto is activated, do you lose audio from the radio? Can you have factory radio playing while google maps is working via Android auto? Many thanks @doobrey
Hi does this also work if ur car has no nav ? I corrected the supplier and they told me it does ?
Do you need a cable connection between the decoder and oem aux port?
I did. Apparently some cars don’t need it. And I did move the fibre optic cable too
Thinking of getting it but its soo expenssive I can add 150-200£ and bave android unit
It cost me around £200
Is there a jumper setting to move the menu to the right side?
Honestly not sure. You could ask the guys who sell it?
Would this work on a bmw f22 2 series?
It does btw just fixed this in my car, didn’t have to install the mic or the aux cable, calls and everything works fine. I believe he had to install the Mic/ aux because he did not switch the optical cable from the originally harness to the new harness provided. Wireless and wired connections works a perfect
I did move the optical cable actually. I suspect there are various combinations on head units
@Kevin Budain I believe the same retrofit will still work fine, as I have parking sensors with all functions working perfect when the car is placed into reverse (display Screen automatically switches to the sensors with sound whilst the CarPlay is in use)
How works the navigation I mean if u have to type in a adress how does this work ?
Depending on what you use, works the same as the app. For example, Google maps, you can either type in the address or use Siri to speak the address. Tomtom, which is also available, works the same as any other tomtom. Apple maps, to be honest, I have used the least. The maps is one of the main reasons we did this, as it saves on paying BMW for new maps each year. Let's be honest, the BMW in car nav is pretty rubbish. This system is pretty awesome!
What do you mean at 10:40 about driver optics
Tou can get the firmware update by downloading it from bmw and use a usb stick
looking to fit this into my F22 soon. Any bugs in the system after a year installed? (Bluetooth dropping connection, bugs and glitches etc.)
Does the oem USB port in the glove compartment work with the CarPlay or do you have to route the USB port given?
I believe you can use the usb if you wish, but no need.
Thank you so much for such a great video, can you please confirm if this works also for F22 (BMW Series 2 2018) ?
Guys what is the brand name of this device? And where can buy it online?
Loved the video I’m thinking of getting one myself now, just wondering if it would fit/work in a BMW 116D 2013 I’m assuming it would but always best to make sure first.
yeah likely - when you follow the link on the video, make sure you tell them the year of your car
What about the volume, can u see it when u make it louder ?
Not that I can recall - we just amend it on the dial on the dash or the steering wheel
Nice video :) I want to have a system like this, but since my car never had idrive (russian car) I don’t think I can fit it.
Oh, I also wanted to say, I did make a little video Incase you ever did get locked out of the boot. It took me ages to work it out. Keep up the good work mate.
Hello,
Does the aux have to be routed from under the armrest to inside into the system?
Thanks
On my system, yes, I had to route to the aux
Doobrey how did you manage to route it to the armrest without it being visible ?
Strange. Mine works fine without the aux cable. I'll do the test to see if it's using bluetooth. I have an Android phone connected to the unit via USB.
@@armadaro9234 on some models aux doesn't need to be connected, mine didn't.
Any reason you didnt go after just a whole screen? On Aliexpress they seem to be about $100 more and the screen is lovely Thanks
Hi, not really. I know I’d have to do a bit of coding, which is quite straight forward, however I just wanted to make sure the retrofit would work initially. I may replace the screen in the coming months too :)
Did you get one? Just the screen and it will work with everything? have you link?
@@MKBUHDD I didn't! My clutch and fly wheel went and thus so did all my money haha
This is exactly what I have been looking at. I have a 2011 so think I'd need the same install. Just wondered if the Bluetooth calling worked as standard still rather than having to use the added mic? As you still retain original functionality don't you.
Hey Ed, I got it from Ali express. The link “should” be in the description below the video. Take a look. If it’s not there or changed, give me a ping.
Oh, saw your other question. The original Bluetooth you turn off, as the unit has its own.
@@Doobrey thank you for coming back so quickly! I was hoping not to have to put in another mic so sounds like I may get away with it. The link does work.. I realised you'd put it there after asking haha
Why change the cable that goes to the screen? I didnt do it and it works great
Do you have to put a cable in the aux? Bc thats def not what i want. And is the sound the same as fm radio sound?
Hey, does music sound worse with this adapter than with a standard audio system?
sorry for my English.
It’s not quite as good as the sound connects via the aux in, its pretty good though and what with google maps etc, works well
Is there any delay with the GPS when using this?
Nope none
My 1 series 2011 just went to bmw for the blower fan recall, everything on my ia drive and centre control worked before they did the repairs, after they finished car would not start until they unplugged the power cable to the drive box and they want to charge me to repair it even though it was working ok before they had their hands on it but they swear blind they didnt touch it until having to find out why my car wouldn't power on anyone else had anything like this happen and had it repaired with no issues ??
How is the use going? Doesn't it generate faults?
works wonderfully!
Thinking of doing this on my car. Has there been any issues installation. Any random lags or resets?
We had an issue where it would reset. Found out I had a binding cable. Sorted that and bang, works perfectly!!!
Does wireless and wired carplay work both?
Yup!!!
Does this startup seamlessly once you have paired your iphone?
Yup! You get in the car and bang, it works
Can these be fitted to the HU_ENTRY and HU_ENTRYNAV iDrive system?
I’m sorry I am not sure
Great video, does this work with Android Auto?
I know you can connect an android phone to it and use it, so if that is the question, then yes :)
why did you need the cable? Isn't it wifi?
Correct it is wifi, but I use the cable to charge the phone at the same time :)
Does it support wireless Android auto (for compatible phone)? Also, does the factory reverse camera still works? Thanks
Doobrey Can it work by wifi and at the same time be charging through the main underarm standard usb? I don’t know what to do with that new usb, I don’t like any visible cable coming out from the central console... Thanks in advance.
Any ideas if it works OK on the professional nav system on the f20?
Very likely. On the alibaba website you can check you model of car it works on. The guys that I worked with were brilliant at helping me solve the microphone issue.
When my phone is locked, my google maps doesn’t follow in real time, anyone who can help?
Great video - once you have setup your phone does the car boot up into carplay immediately each time or do you have to hold the back button for 3 seconds and/or select the wireless dev option every time to get it working?
Hey Cian,
When you get in, it seems to start up straight away, so pretty cool. Also it is wireless, so even better than mine in my Audi!
Hello there!
Great job with the installation! I installed mine as well.
Just a question, how did you run your aux cable to the center console? I did this and my sound was terrible and I also have terrible sound quality
i’ve got the exact same car. does the aliexpress link have everything I need for the job as I wanna do this asap!
Yup. It had the unit, just check on your head unit and get yourself some tools to remove the dash components etc..
Perfect mate , thank you! is that unit similar with droidUK ?
Haven’t seen droiduk, but I suspect these units are pretty much all the same
Can that work on series 2 2016 active tourer small screen
If yes where can I buy it
Thanks for that tutorial- i connteced all cables like you.
But I am not able to Volume up the panel after the box is installed.
Do you have any ideas?
Did you plug in the optical cable?
@@Doobrey yes - I missed to fix the optical fiver cable - now all is Running. Thank you very much!
Can you make a video how to retrofit my steering wheel to the left? I purchased the wrong car.
Sure, move to a country that drives on the wrong side ;)
Your video is fantastic, I actually think I could do this now that you have talked through the process so well -- the user interface of that unit is butt ugly though, I'm going to try to find one with a nicer UI 😄
Hi, I'm about to retrofit my f22 with the MMI Carplay kit. Still have a doubt about the existing microphone. Since my car has the original one installed i'd like to know if it will work with the system or I still need to use a replacing mic. In this case, is a microphone provided in the kit? Thanks for sharing!
I’m using the existing one. Had to remove the pillar airbag cover then run the cable, but it is really easy to do
Hi there, thanks for the video - just wanted to ask if you had to keep the aux lead plugged in to the aux socket on the car in order for the system to play sound? My aux socket is quite crackly and would be a deal breaker if i had to keep the lead in? Cheers
On mine yes, but depending on the age of the car and the setup it may not require it.
hello there mate, quick question. Does youtube work on the screen too? Thanks
Yes. You can also screen share
Would this affect the insurance in any way?
No it dont
Hey Man!
Two questions, you had micro in box or how you connect it to the car play module, and the second question is about aux cable, you have to connect it to the AUX on armrest or somewhere else?
Aux cable plugged from the unit, to the AUX in the armrest, yes.
Re: Microbox - not quite sure what you mean, can you explain a bit more please?
@@Doobrey I think the question that many ask is where did you lay the aux cable?
Whats it like with steering wheel controls? For some reason on my F21 I can't skip tracks using the steering wheel on the factory bluetooth, curious if you can skip tracks using them via Carplay.
Yup all of the steering wheel buttons work perfectly. It really is an amazing upgrade/ retrofit !!
Hey Man,
I just ordered this for my F22 car but and i wanted to ask you some questions. Any way we can chit chat through facetime or whatsapp or something ?
Hi how can I contact you
Through the youtube channel. But I’ll pop it here
Chad@doobreydoo.net
Ive installed this on my F20, i swear to god the sound quality is absolute dogshit. Even when using the unit’s EQ, you dont get away from the fact that it sounds like oldschool FM radio.
is it so bad mate? I'm gonna install it tomorrow.
Hi, I’m fitted it all but I’m not getting any audio. I didn’t do the part about connecting AUX first and went straight into holding back for 3 seconds and connecting CarPlay. I assume this is reason why…but I’ve tried everything to revert and nothing, is there a fix?
Sounds like you need to connect it to the aux.
