  • The first ever steel generation (steel bladed) broadsword has been made my Black Fencer with some input from us. We have the first prototype and it has been through one session of drills, here is a first look at it. Feedback will be given based on this prototype to create a standard production model.

    Can't wait for it to be put out for the public

    Curious about this one how it will hold up in sparring and training. Locking forward to see some action, first impression is interesting, especially the broader blade.

    Hi Nick, I have an NCO Highland Light Infantry basked hilted broadsword by Mole. Here some specs for you to compare your Black Fencer with if you're interested: blade length 32 1/2 inches and width 1.5 inches, overall length 101.5 cm, point of balance 7 cm, weight 1392 grams, basket width 13.7 cm and height without the pommel 15.5 cm.
    Thanks for another very interesting vid.

    I got my armor class broadsword with hema blade a few months ago and, despite its great value and performance, I really want a broadsword with a broad blade! I guess this one is gonna stay on my list.

    What I liked about it is that it could just as well represent a heavy cavalry/dragoon sword of the mid 18th century. This might as well be a sword used by the scots grey at Warburg in 1760.

    Sorry to go off topic but can I ask about the liner in your Armour Class?

    What I'm mostly wondering is how it feel to get hit by one of those. I've encountered some broadswords that were just murder-sticks.

      We sparred last night, and Nick hit me in the nipple with it. Not much different to a hit from a BF sabre. I'd say maybe 20% meatier than a sabre hit. This is the prototype though, and specs may change - Michael.

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing

      We are currently pushing them to make a synthetic dussack, as well as a steel bladed basket type (what is often called war dussack or tessack). Hopefully we will see both of these within the year.

      @@AcademyofHistoricalFencing Balefire Blades have made some really aesthetically pleasing dussacks and basket hilts. I wish Black Fencer could pull the aesthetics off. Generally I think its steel generations look much better than its synthetics and hope they keep it up!

      Sure, my feeling is still much the same. Basket is a little large through I know they have reduced it since this first one. It has been robust and fun, no sets or damage beyond light burrs.

    I tried the synthetic version of this sword and I must say i was very tired after practice. On the other hand when matched with sabers and lighter blades it pushed them out during thrusting and slashing exercises.

    I am shopping for a well balanced highland broadsword the on you have seems to fit the bill, So when I do order one from (Dark Fencer or Black Fencer) did you say? What weight did you specify? Also what blade is that as well? I love it that's perfect. The broadswords I have I seriously doubt would stand up to fencing. One is a Windlass Steel Crafters steel Culloden with three fullers in it's blade. But the blade is not dulled or rounded on the tip as yours is.
    The other broadsword is a brass basket hilt with a very beat up backsword blade,(previous owner). Again not fencing ready. So just wanted the exact one you have should work out great! And for around $400 US.

    You mention that the basket is quite wide/big. Just to get a better feeling of what you mean, is the basket bigger then the black fencer regimental synthetic baskethilt, if so how much would be the difference? (as I have that model at home)

    I see you had a rubber tip put on. Is that a modified purple heart rubber tip?

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a Black Fencer tip, a bit of a stretch but it does go on. I don't always use this with a tip as it is flared already, just not to a huge degree.

    Hi, for the weight of the sword you first said in the video that the sword was 1,39 kg and later on you said 1,35 kg. is the sword 1,39 kg or 1,35 kg? And do you know if Black Fencer changed something to bring the weight down in their final product that is for sale in the store? In the store it says , 1,30 kg but not sure if that is the real weight after they changed the product to bring the weight down or they changed nothing and made the product as is while saying on the website it is 1,30 kg. 🤔

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mmm that was an odd mistake! The sword is 1.35kg. They have indeed made some changes to bring the weight down, but I have yet to see one to see how exactly this was achieved, and therefore I have not weighed the newer models either, but I would expect them to be close to the website claim of 1.3kg.

      @@AcademyofHistoricalFencing Oh ok that's pretty good for a wide bladed sword. Also has the best looking fuller I've seen in a long time. I feel tempted to ask Blackfencer to make an arming sword out of that blade, with maybe brazil nut type pommel and put the inscription 'Ulfberht' on it because it looks the part.

  • @bobspracklin9885
    @bobspracklin9885 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How about a hemispheric pommel?

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did suggest exactly that, but I know they are limited to using a selection of standard pommels for produciton models rather than their customs to keep prices down. I believe they have used their dagger pommel and flattened the one end to give it partially that effect and make it a little more flush.
