  • The Caro-Kann is my favorite defense against e4, and I keep thinking that I know most of the early traps and blunders white could play. Well, again, I have been proven wrong. My opponent gave up a pawn for no reason very early in the opening and I didn't think it was a good idea to grab it so I spent almost no time actually calculating the capture. Needless to say it led to a great position for black. What happened next should be forgotten quickly.

      I think Aronian allowed his knight and king to be double attacked by a rook. He carefully amassed a winning advantage and lost it to a simple tactic. Chess is brutal.

    Hi Stjepan, nice game all the same. Seems you overlooked the principle of "checks captures and attack" making it possible for the doomed knight on g6 to escape to e7 with a check!

    Always enjoy watching your training games and your commentary. At 1:44 I felt like I can relate to your thought process here. I feel that knowing when to or not to grab free pawns is one of the most challenging aspects of chess, at least for me, because we assume our opponent is focused enough to not blunder a pawn so early. There must be some deeper idea, we think. However, I think that in general, unless you are playing at a very high level and expect your opponent to have prepared very deep, we should take free pawns by default unless it clearly gives our opponent something or we know for some reason such as theory or calculation etc that it is a bad idea. In this particular case I feel like you dismissed the pawn grab too easily, since Qxd4 comes with a threat of Qxe4, forcing a queen trade and just being up a pawn in a position that is nearing an endgame, which can only favor you, as well as many other advantages of that move which I am sure you have seen for yourself in your analysis of this game. You mentioned that the queen is misplaced on e2 which you should have considered.
    Point is, I think that it is always a good idea to consider grabbing a free pawn unless it clearly gives compensation to your opponent. If your opponent played Rd1?? as you feared it would have actually blundered a full piece. I think you overlooked this because you were too subjective in your analysis, saying this move "looked scary" instead of looking down another ply to see it is perfectly fine for you, which is normal, we all make this type of mistake from time to time, especially in quicker time controls. Another very hard thing in chess is knowing how deep to look down certain lines before coming to a conclusion instead of discarding candidate moves immediately. Best of luck.

    At 4:40 did you ever consider Be6? Forces white to play a3, b3 or Kb1. Black can follow up with Bg7, Qd6 or Qa5 respectively. Black looks to have an interesting attack.

      I think because he seems to see himself as an future GM let alone Fide Candidate Master taking a simple "pawn" is not the thing you do at higher levels of chess. That is why Korchnoi was considered a bit of an "rebel" at that level as he was not afraid to take an free pawn from time to time.

    • @Jefferson-ly5qe
      @Jefferson-ly5qe ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kimw200blaze4 yeah but you can overthink it sometimes. He left a pawn on the table there, plus a knight too later in the game. Sometimes you can overthink things. I think he's doing great, but he gets in his head a bit sometimes. A bit more confidence would do him good.

    • @kimw200blaze4
      @kimw200blaze4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also as he looks at openings from a pure theory perspective, the problem arises for him when someone deviates from an opening line and just plays from a more tactical response, and this leads to him getting confused.

      @@strategygames1026 yea, I've barely even played chess compared to him but I quite often see tactics he overlooks which has stunned me.

      You are right. However it's also the fact that statistically, the odds are weighed heavily against him at his age at achieving GM status. His just too old to achieve it at his relatively young age. Great if he could defy the odds however. Even Gotham said it is a extremely hard task for himself to achieve GM, and he is already an IM.

    Stejphan you spend too much time calculating at the beginning of these training games. Always check for sideways and backward moves (in this case queen was attacking sideways) because those are hardest to spot

      Not strange, typical. Caro Slav London players hate calculating. That's why they play these solid lines - to avoid positions that must be resolved by calculation. This tells you how to play against them and what they need to study (its NOT openings).
