Touhou 8: Imperishable Night - Stage 4 (No Commentary)

- The forest of bamboo under the moonlight was as eerie as a dream.
Each bamboo tree looked as if it would start glowing at any moment.
Let's be honest here, this stage is completely unfair to Marisa and Marisa alone. If you're playing as any character that has either a homing attack or a wide range attack (see not Marisa) this stage will be a cakewalk. The stage is filled mainly with small easy to kill enemies however the problem is they keep coming staggered in groups from the left and right sides of the screen and if you don't kill them fast they will not hesitate to fill the screen with bullets. With that in mind you're going to have to quickly zip back and forth between both sides of the screen while weaving through what bullets to get blasted about the screen. However your saving grace is that the stage itself is unusually short only lasting for about a minute but all in all formula wise this stage is a weird one. Interesting note the stage theme is a remix of the windows era title themes.
Boss wise this is a big throwback to Touhou 4 in that the boss will be the playable character opposite who you're playing as. If playing as Marisa (or Sakuya) you'll fight Reimu and if you're playing as Reimu (or Youmu) you'll fight Marisa. Also to note technically you've seen their attacks before. You may recall in Touhou 7 there were two play styles for each character with two different bombs for each style making a total of 4 different bombs for each character. Well both Reimu and Marisa use 5 spell cards here and the first four are actually danmaku representations of those four bombs uses back in Touhou 7.
Reimu fights exactly as she did in Touhou 4 with some of her cool down phases even being more modern versions of some of her key attacks back then. Her main strategy is to corner you in a mess of danmaku then quickly pick you off with some well placed shots when you will have the hardest time dodging them. Just keep a close eye on what bullets she aims at you while trying not to feel too claustrophobic when she boxes you in. To continue on the Touhou 4 references her theme as well "Maiden's Capriccio ~ Dream Battle" is also a remix of her theme in Touhou 4 "Maiden's Capriccio"
Marisa acts similarly to how she did in her PC-98 era outings as well though this time borrowing attack styles from not only Touhou 4 but also Touhou 2 and a bit of Touhou 3 even. All in all though the theme is the same all around, organized chaos. She loves having things orbit around her and almost all of her attacks will do that in some way and just like all the way back when she was a red head those orbiting orbs can be destroyed to make the attack easier. Though with the inclusion of Yukari you also have the option of bypassing them entirely to attack Marisa, but you'd have to deal with a tougher attack for longer. A long attack gradually getting easier or a short but difficult attack you decide what fits you best. Also like Reimu's music Marisa's theme "Love-colored Master Spark" is a remix of her theme on her very first outing in Touhou 2 "Love-coloured Magic"

Also I really like how some of Reimu’s nonspells work here. Between the youkai and human side, they can be like different cards entirely. The orbs make a huge difference and I wish some bullets worked vice versa, like if they only showed up for the youkai partner.

They are just having a friendly bit of fighting to see who goes on, they did the exact same in Lotus Land Story aka Touhou 4, except they were a bit more...ferocious. Alice's little comment at 4:38 however might be a thinly veiled reference to the fact she has been beat up by both Reimu and Marisa in Mystic Square..TWICE and would like to get back at them.

Yeah I know that death-bombing is a thing however firstly I never really liked watching video's that just show the person bombing through the bosses and that goes doubly true for Marisa since Master Spark can beat any spell card in one hit. I'd rather just take the death and try to get better from there. Secondly I honestly have a hard time bombing anything unless I'm expecting to die and not only do I not like that mindset but situations where that happens are few and far between.

Actually, the idea for Final Spark is to get a route down so you can move with the unfolding stars as much as possible. As such it plays very differently than Master Spark.
Also, I found my success rate for Double Spark (Master Spark on Lunatic) went up a lot when I started planning my movements in advance.
But Reimu is right, she always want to keep Marisa away from resolving incidents cause she always causes trouble for example:
In the incident of the Red mist in the scarlet devil mansion she stole Patchouli's book, In the incident of Perfect cherry blossom she was going to die but Reimu saved her, In this incident of Imperashible Night in the series and when you choose Reimu to play, she thought Reimu and Yukari we're the ones that caused the incident, but it was actually the Lunarians's doing.

You took a bit too much info from Memories of Phantasm. Canonically, Reimu never really save Marisa from Yuyuko, since their story are seperated. In canon IN, Both Reimu and Marisa thought the team you are playing as the culprit.

I'm kinda curious though, what does the red colored shot (or bosses turning red whenever they get hit alot) do?
Red colored shot doesn't change anything damage wise, rather it lets you know when you're in over 80% youkai or human mode (though it's red for youkai and blue for human). It happens when you've been shooting for a while purely in focused or unfocused mode. As you remain in said mode it basically just makes it so you get more time orbs for doing various things (like shooting enemies and grazing bullets)
So, does that mean the more you hit , the greater or higher your score is?

Yes and no considering the condition the original Touhou games are in and ZUN's opinion on the matter (ie: he don't care)
Cause you are downloading a game that's normally sold for free, however ZUN's an independent developer and he only makes a set number of games that he sells at Comiket and Reitaisai. So as it currently stands there is no way you buy a copy of an older Touhou game in a way that'll bring money to ZUN. You can only get used copies secondhand online.
On the other hand I specifically said older games. As of lately with his two most recent games (Touhou 15.5 Antinomy of Common Flowers and Touhou 16 Hidden Star in Four Seasons) he's been putting them on Steam. So now people _do_ have a way of buying his games in a way that purchases from ZUN.

I'd say Marisa's easier. Both of them have some tricky parts, but Reimu in particular has a couple _really_ nasty and precise parts of her fight.
basically, if you want a 1cc and not a low-bomb run, Marisa is 10 times easier, because every single spell/nonspell of hers can be erased with a single bomb. Reimu, on the other hand...
If you want a low-bomb (or NB) run, Marisa is easier, because Reimu just spits rng to your face in her nons

Do you have annotations turned on? If not basically you slowly move along the bottom of the screen while moving up a little when getting near the edges before returning to going along the bottom. Keep in mind the purple bullets are aimed at your last position so you can plan ahead what to do knowing that.
Thanks, I really need to find a good guide, I only got into touhou last year and I love it, but I haven't beat any of them (I only recently downloaded EOSD and IN).
