    As someone who never bothered to go to college, I agree with Chilled when he says that some kind of "real life" class should be implemented in the 12th grade. Something to teach the students about how to write a check, write a resume, etc. That and apprenticeship classes are something else that I always believed in. Man, the US school system could be so much better...

    • @TehLTBond
      @TehLTBond 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's crazy to me how far behind the school system there is... How on Earth is writing resumes not a thing in the general education plan when it's such a key point when applying to a job? Apprenticeships are literally mandatory at certain grades here in Germany so students can get a feel of how the "real world" is. Hell, I had to do a couple of apprenticeships for "social jobs" even though I had no interest in pursuing that type of career to "gain life skills"... and of one those times was in technical college!

      The saddest part of this is that high schools give these classes for certain groups but said groups can't use those classes as much and everyone in general could use these classes.

      @@TheTaintedWisdom I mean there is that route, just lose all faith and hope and security for those who do not have a voice. Not like there *are* good people in the world that are worth fighting for, let the unjust simply rule since it's not worth it. With that attitude, yeah the world is doomed, but only if you let it, so no, don't lose faith in humanity

    • @Deathofdiablo
      @Deathofdiablo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TheTaintedWisdom The same could be said about those who lost faith in humanity, they aren't paying enough attention to the world. There are plenty of reasons to lose faith in humanity, but also plenty of reasons to keep it. If we all could learn to work together instead of constantly fighting each other, than there would be more reasons to believe in people, and that things will be better.

    Even if it helps, I don't want governments getting a pass for telling half-truths for "the greater good". That's also the reason a lot of democratic countries have term limits. Sure it'll help the government stabilize if they don't need to worry about a popularity contest every 5 years, but that's established to protect us from having a military dictatorship for 31 years.

    28:30 Adding to Chilled's explanation of Columbus Day Origin (Although Columbus Day had been observed in NYC dating back to 1792). I believed it happened in 1890-1891. Nineteen Italian-Americans were accused of killing the city's police chief. All of them were acquitted. While they were held in the prison an angry mob stormed the prison and lynched all the Italians. It is the largest known mass lynching in United States history. The Italian Navy threatened to attack New Orleans (where the lynchings happened). The accident is called the Hennessy Case.

      I've often thought that instead of Calc and Advanced Algebra in high school which I've never used once in my adult life (and I'm 40 so that 22 years of not using advanced math), there needed to be a course in Basic Accounting where you do balancing bank accounts and figuring basic taxes and such. Or Basic Home Maintenance where you learn how to change a tire and check oil in a car or learn basic plumbing and electrical, where you know where your water shut-off is and the inside of a circuit box and a fuse box. Stuff that you would need for life that a good portion of kids would not have access to because the parents don't know or do that stuff either. Just basic stuff that's important to know in case of emergency.

    I went to a university in Australia, a university in my state, and a technical college. I graduated from the latter two but I think back fondly on the shit I learned in Australia and the technical college. I was made to take an Economics class and holy hell it was insightful. Don, my professor, made us use a balance spending sheet and keep track of what we were spending and how much. It's because of him that I ended up downloading Mint and then keeping track of my credit cards and making my score much better than it was in 2013. Student loans aren't as expensive due to him so thank you for that Technical college. Also for showing me again how to hold a camera and to storyboard. Australia taught me and my state school said f-that.

    Masks are worn in the hospital for a reason and not just by surgeons, so it does protect you, just that there are different types of mask, but even then if people wear regular dust or fabric masks, it protects you, if other people do it as well. It minimises the chances of you getting sick. The virus just spreads less. I keep extra face masks, hand sanitiser and alcohol wipes in my bag at all times. Even though the cases in Estonia are very low, you can never be too careful. I only see very few people wear masks, which I think is not good, especially because the boarders are open again. They already talk about second wave. I know that you can’t just stop living your life, but it should be done, while still being mindful about other people.
    I had a few classes in college, which taught about budget and finances, but it only was a part of one subject. I also had a class called self management, which was an awesome subject. It taught how to plan your schedule, how to study in university, how to keep up motivation and basically about university life management. It was really needed subject. I just wished it would be longer. In Estonia going to university is free. Only sometimes you have to pay. There are special conditions, when it’s not free for you.

    The one major flaw I see in the United States of America is that we are not united at all. At best, we are two factions constantly fighting over power, at worst, we are a multitudes of groups constantly fighting each other for insignificant reasons, unable to see how stupid it is to fight. Government is democrats and republicans caring more about beating the other instead of working to make this country better. We the people never unify to work together unless something terrible occurs, and even then, another group rises in opposition, or those within the group use it to cover their activities hurting their cause, like joining a peaceful protest to start looting and vandalizing. Instead of arguing against each other, we should learn to work together to improve the lives of everyone in this country, not just one group.

      I'm glad someone said this.
      People are trying to look back and judge by modern standards, but most of those 'standards' aren't even 100 years old yet. Hell, WOMEN VOTING in the United States (at least on a national scale) isn't even 100 yet (give it a month and 20 days after this post and that will be false, but still). LGBTQ awareness/rights is from this CENTURY. So why are we judging by modern standards that some of us literally saw come into existence during our lifetime in regards to people from 200-300 years ago, or even 500-600 in the case of Columbus? How does that make ANY sense?

      Columbus wasn't even CLOSE to the more weird beginnings of U.S. history. There's so much innacurate information about it. First off, we were founded by actual religious nuts (you can call it religious freedom all you want but they still killed their children for misbehavior (puritans)), and criminals. England liked to dumo their criminals in the U.S. Some people did want to start a new life but were too poor and became indentured servants (who were regularly abused. They were the slaves before slavery was more popular.) Bacon's Rebellion and the Glorious Revolution and the Enlightenment in Eurooe led to the popularity of slavery and the end of abusing indentured servants. Also "taxation without representation" is such a shitty phrase. They didn't want representation in parliament. Do the math, they wouldn't be heard in parliament amongst the English. They wanted salutary neglect that they had before the french and indian war. The Boston Tea party happened bc smugglers like john hancock were making less money bc England's tea from the declining Dutch East India company was cheaper.

    You know, Da Vinci Day replacing Columbus Day doesn't sound like a bad idea.
    Columbus - Spearheaded an expedition in an attempt to find the Indies, only to run into America - fairly incompetent leader who lost his flagship on the return trip home
    Da Vinci - Celebrated artist and inventor, sported a great beard, hero of the Renaissance
    Granted, Da Vinci had nothing to do with America, but it could work out.

    Hey chilled totally agree with you on education, I just wanted to put the suggestion out there that I think the main reason schools don't push for/have as many 'life skills' classes (or for that matter teaching trades as well) is that it makes schools less money and alot of schools have strapped budgets as it is due to lack of public spending, so there's increasing pressure on schools to get kids to college to secure funding. I don't know if you'll read this but I do think it's an important topic! Love the vids

    I'll say, my school (California) we actually have some really good options for life preparing classes, my boyfriend for his senior year had 3 band classes and 2 academic classes having the rest of his periods free for work/study hall, you can also take construction classes, woodshop, metal work, or programing, for academics we also had erwc for English that taught how to look at current articles and understanding the views of other people instead of usual high-school boring books

    If you live in a commonwealth state like I do (KY) most times the state will pay for extra education. In my high school I chose to do online classes my senior year so I had to take the two required courses (math and English) then I was allowed to chose 5 extra classes to take. I choose firefighter 1, intro to fire services, intro to ems, real world math, and one other. Then when I wanted to go to college the state (KY) will pay for your college if the job is “needed” like RN, EMT, Paramedic, manufacturing, factory engineering, and many more. If anyone in KY wants details on the free college lmk

    Speaking of wasting time and money on college. 11 years ago after graduating, I got talked into going to a Bible college by my mom. I agreed because they apparently had one of the best TESOL (basically teaching English overseas) program, and that's what I wanted to do back then. It was a 4 year program. In the 2 years I was there, I took all of 1 English class, forced to do Psychology for some reason, and then the rest were Bible classes....which were extremely hard. I was doing so bad the first year that I had to convince them why I should be let back in, and because I was so afraid of being a failure, I went back. I am still in debt because of this shit decision.

    I feel like part of the reason the mask thing is so difficult for the US in particular, is that we're taught in more or less every avenue that "doing" is our national identity. We're taught that Americans do stuff. The detective who plays by his own rules is the hero, and the boss who's being cautious is the coward who will see the error of his ways. We fight the Nazis, we go to the moon, we protest the injustices. And all that stuff is great, and we should do it. But now, we've been presented with a situation where the correct option is just, play it safe, wait it out. And even if logically we know that, it feels weird to us. (Please wear your masks and be safe and all of that)
    I could also be very wrong on this. I'm curious if other people feel the same or if I've just been given a weird view of our national identity.

    27:21 Galm: "We're taught about history, about all these bad things that happened, why is it still happening?"
    It's because we, as a nation, are taught to hate our history. There is no other nation in the world that hates their history so much as we do, to the point that people do not know anything beyond what's on Epic Rap Battles or Drunk History and only to the point that it's entertaining to them.

      To add to this there are some mainly liberals that are wanting to erase their history. And to erase history means you are doomed to repeat it. The South during the Civil War was all Democrats. I am from the South and I love our Southern history as well as all the history of the US and am sad that the left is trying to erase what they did. Yes slavery was bad yet it was part of history and still happens throughout the world.
