B3313 is easily my favorite ROM hack. I actually don't really feel creeped out by it much; if anything, it makes me feel like a kid again in a way I've yet to experience from any other game ever since I _was_ a kid. That feeling of being totally unsure of how big the castle really is and just having fun, wandering around aimlessly, and finding all sorts of new and interesting things I've never seen before just by taking one different turn. I've played it quite a bit at this point and I still don't think I've found everything. To say I'm excited for 1.0 would be an enormous understatement.
The sinister force twisiting reality bit is accurate. I from what's implied I think the story starts out normal until you enter the castle and its supposed to imply the personalization ai is evil and is trapping the mario cast in the internal plexus that is the castle. Which is why some signs/toads in the game mention being lost in the castle walls. Constantly changing the layout so they're forever doomed to roam the halls. Which is why everything is liminal and why everything is off in that eerie way. Mario does indeed have a hat in the game its just when you press the yellow switch where the metal cap is is when he loses it. It gives you 4 stars in exchange of losing your cap the whole save file. This is a very interesting rom hack. If you havent played it i recommend playing it to explore and see the creepy almost endless hallways and rooms. You do need 30 stars to fight the final boss tho
@@Dash120z There's only really one i can recall and it's the unagi in the flooded hall after the star trap in one of the castle hallways. there's also a few faceless mario rooms you can go but you have to actively look for them to find it. I wouldn't say this hack is like scary jumpscare wise. It's more of a ambient atmospheric hack. It's definitely unnerving and makes you wonder what could be hiding around a corner.
Really glad to see this getting covered again, and yes you did compare it to The Shining in the previous video. Honestly I hope the proposed idea of a yearly revisit to B3313 is something you actually follow through on, not only for when the full updated release drops eventually, but also because it is truly the most fascinating fan project out there. Even still you haven't either mentioned or found the most unsettling portions of it in the form of the two ever infamous Eel moments, and yet by the same token I wasn't aware of just how far the bizarre insinuations surrounding Wet-Dry World went, that alone is a great showcase of just how wonderfully mysterious and dense the hack is, and it's why I love it so much.
Even watching the footage for this game feels like a mind fuck. I am so confused. I hope someone does a full playthrough after dropping acid and uploads it to TH-cam.
The game does a great job at what it wants to do, unsettle you, keep you on edge trying to get a grip on the whole experience but never being able to. Its confusing, frustrating, sometimes repetitive, but it kept my attention because you're never sure what will be behind the next door. It is a great piece of art that evokes a lot of emotions.
I have a theory about the ABCD lobbies: Maybe they are different cuz the designers made them like that to choose which lobby is better suited for the game but they all got scraped
I'd rather play the original game rather than living in a maze that you can never memorize, full of twists, lefts and rights, U turns and more confusing things
Mario starts out with a cap. You permanently lose it upon pressing the yellow switch.
