Just recently sold my skiff and bought another kayak--Now we have one for everyone in the family. No insurance, no registration, no property taxes, and hardly any maintenance. We just love them.
Ive become a big fan. I always had motor boats and at the age of 51, I bought my first yak and I love it, nothing compares. Im in NW Florida so the river and the bays are within a minutes reach, but you nailed it on the head. Some days a boat is just a hassle. I still enjoy the motor boat but kayaks and tranquility are a great combo! Its amazing how much you see just easing along. My big boat sits more than my kayak! Keep up the good work!
Another nicely done vid. The time and effort you put into your postings is truly appreciated by those of that look forward to spending time with you here in cyber-world. Jon or kayak.... It's the guy in the boat that make these videos enjoyable.
who the heck would dislike this video... love your videos Marty.. if you ever come over to the Ft. Lauderdale area.. hit me up... we'll go fishing offshore
zoffinger ha...I am still learning how to fish... caught my first sailfish last year and mahi mahi.. but most times I don't catch much... Still have a blast on the water with my 6 year old first mate
Dude , you hit the nail on the head. I'm 54, been yak fishing sense 1974. Theirs nothing more rewarding than fishing from a good yak. I fish for stripes and big catfish, mostly at nite. Paddling on a calm glass like lake or river at nite, only one out their, stars bright with a moonlitt sky is awesome and spiritual. Enjoy. Ps, I own a bass boat. Don't use it.
I'm often out in the late afternoon early evening..partly so I can watch the sun set from the water. I end up just setting the fishing rod down and take in the wonder. Great for the blood pressure too.
Hey Marty. Just my two cents here, I imagine I am like most people on your channel. Your perspective on fishing is what I'm here for. Every episode encompasses much more than watching you fish from a kayak. So for me, listening to our take on tidal conditions and how they relate to the movement of fish over the flats (for instance), is as valid from a johnboat as it is from a kayak. Your modifications to the boat are as interesting to me as the ones you've so far done on the kayak. A photo safari of a particularly beautiful morning - same thing. What I'm looking forward to is your ability to get to places you hadn't been able to go before. I am going to make a prediction that one day you'll make a trip down to Chokoloskee or Flamingo, and fish that area at some point! Not impossible from a kayak by any means, but your range is certainly hampered. The boat is going to open up a lot of opportunities for you, and I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing what that entails. Best of luck to you Marty. Tight lines.
Another fantastic video. You have a sophisticated point of view on life that many people never achieve. I loved the reference to the "innocence" of kayaking. Thanks for enriching all of our lives.
man this sounds amazing....i just started fishing two months ago,and i love it....it is almost like going to the doctor....and i get fresh fish when i want!i want a kayak now and will be getting one very soon, thank you for the videos all the knowledge will come in handy....great videos thank you!!
I'm from New Zealand, out in my Kayak every weekend, were we are we are blessed to be surrounded by so many beautiful coastlines and some awesome fishing, wouldn't change my kayak for anything. If you haven't been to N.Z, you should try, kayak fishing in the coromandel is the gate way to heaven. Cheers mate love your vids too
I'm investigating the idea of kayaking. So I'll be a newby... it's great to watch your videos because of the way you explain your decisions. I've decided that if I do give it a go, I'll be opting for a sit on kayak (or hybrid). My interests are enjoying the nature in a quiet river or lake setting, and fishing too; so flat water. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Cheers & atb
kayaking is a great activity that can become addictive, so be warned!! if you find a yak your interested in most dealers will let you demo it, or just rent one till you find what you want. I have a native ultimate 14.5 (it's a hybrid yak) which works well for me. hope this helps, you won't regret getting one.
I have a 14' jon boat and a 10' kayak. Since I fish alone quite a bit, I almost always use my kayak because it is soooo east to just grab it and hit the water. No hassels at all.
Good video. I didn't start out with kayaks learning about the water, I grew up racing small sailboats in New York. Since then I've been a bit prejudice against motors, and I think I'll always favor natural power. Some 15 years went by between sailing and kayaking for me, in fact I just recently got my kayak (West Marine Pompano 120 - same thing as the '08 Tarpon 120), and I love the convenience of just being able to get up and go whenever I feel like it. I've had some adventures at the local lakes here in Arizona, and paddled up some canyons that motor boats couldn't dream of going. If I ever do get a boat, it'll be a sailboat, and I think I'll always keep a kayak around, they're just too much fun.
It is like cycling through the mountains vs driving. Having done both, there is a serene enjoyment to a canoe or kayak, but there is a destination advantage to a large boat. I will often bring my inflatable kayak in my boat.
I tried a kayak last month, on the way home I found a little jon boat at a garage sale for the same amount I paid for the yak. I don't regret giving the yak a whirl but I think for what I do the jon boat is the superior fishing craft. It's heavier but it still rides on my car just fine, I can still handle it by myself and still has the 'just toss it in the water and go' simplicity with much better stability and room to bring an extra person or more tackle. YMMV of course.
Hey Marty! U should use your john boat as a mothership to get your kayak to far away places and just anchor up your boat. So u just put your kayak on the boat, go to a spot, put your kayak in go fishing come back, load up your yak, drive back and go home. That would let you get to all the far away places, and you'll have a yak!
I'm 19, I've owned 7 boats so far (12 foot jon boat, 2 kayaks, 2 canoes, a 13 ft. Gheenoe with 8 h.p. and a 12 foot skiff with a 8, and a 14 foot skiff with a 70) I can agree with almost everything you said except for the part about it being quick or easy to get a kayak from your house to the water. Having a boat on a trailer is a great advantage over having to put all your gear in your kayak in and out everytime you want to go. Flushing a boat motor takes like 10 seconds and you can definitely run your jon boat in the depth of water you're in. A jon boat will draft in 6 inches of water, before you hit the flats you stop and tilt your motor up anyways and use a pole or trolling motor to navagaite. The biggest use I have found with kayaks is not fishing the flats in the river, but going off the beach when it's calm. From my experience of fishing both kayak and real boats. If I wasn't going to be living in a apartment soon I would definitely have a boat on a trailer over a kayak anyday.
When i go on the boat with my brother n law, I don't have as much fun, I can go on my kayak and him on his boat and fish side by side and it's totally different experience. I think when I'm kayaking I'm more one with nature so to speak. You're a guy that into nature, you're not out there just to fish for the sake of fishing or bragging that you got the biggest fish. I went to this place this summer and got 13 Northern Pike they were like 8-12 inches and so much fun. I didn't care that I didn't get the biggest fish that day. Man I'm still having fun from that day, because I get to share it with you now and it brings it all back to me.
I knew several people who had a power boats, and after several years went to kayaks. It's quiet and easy to maintain. Speeding otor boats are a huge problem on the Texas coast. There are very few no wake zones.
Sigh.. i had awesome plans to Kayak my weekend away, sadly, Lake Wylie (only lake where i live out here) is at capacity with boats this weekend and the waves they create killed all my hopes :(
Very good question kayak or boat? I have had fishing boats for the past few years and had ok luck and ok fun fishing. This summer I picked up a 200 dollar kayak. I didnt start using it till september because any spare time I had I was on the boat. The very first day I took it out fishing I had more fun than fishing on my boat! After that day I have been addicted to fishing from the kayak. I can get in closer to structure up here in the northeast there are losts of boulder fields that hold stripers. I dont worry about hitting rocks and damaging the prop. Also the stealthyness of the kayak doesn't spook any fish and I can control the trolling speed better on the kayak. The boat is fun with a few people on it like the wife and kids. But when im solo I think ill be on the kayak. Cool videos man, been watching them since september when I discovered fishing from the kayak. Good luck with the boat.
I started on a yak, and my habits of throuroughly working an area is still present in my bass boat. I tend to motor to my spot and then wont turn the big motor on all day, its all trolling or anchor.
hey marty i just graduated and as a graduation present im getting an emotion spitfire 8 and i've always wanted to get a kayak just like yours so i was wondering if you could like make a video explaining the mesurements for the pontoons and like how to mount the tackle/tool box in the front. im pretty sure that some people would also like to know because your kayak is AWESOME!!!!!! thank you.
zoffinger hey Marty, guess what i just got my kayak in yesterday and i was wondering if you could (if its not to much of a hastle) show me the measurement of the pvc and stuff? and i was also wondering if you could also show the rigging you did for the skeg. sorry if im being a bother but im just really excited. could you pm me or email me at robertocortes59@gmail.com Thank you. ps: your videos are the main source of me wanting to get a kayak, the first time i saw your kayak i was like i want a kayak exactly like that. but ya i just wanted to tell you that your kayak and videos are AWESOME!!! pps: sorry for the bad grammar and punctuation but oh well haha!!!!

Awh man, i feel bad for bring soo judgmental. I was really just worried about not getting soo many cool kayak tips. Your vids are addicting. No ninsense, high quality due to your obvious hard work and talent for sure... The jonboat is a natural progression. I would probably go there myself if i could keep it at my condo. I have noticed a 5$ parking fee at boat ramps local. “He always thought of the sea as 'la mar' which is what people call her in Spanish when they love her...Some of the younger fishermen, who...had motorboats...spoke of her as 'el mar' which is masculine. But the old man always thought of her as feminine...and if she did wild or wicked things it was because she could not help them." - Ernest Hemingway, 'The Old Man and the Sea'
ha, this is funny to me because I understand where you're coming from except I've done things all arse about. Ive been brought up fishing from boats and at 39yrs old I'm doing up my first kayak. Unfortunately you're still driving on the wrong side of the road though so I can't take this vid or your learning curve too seriously.
You must not know much about boating in the flats, I have 2 boats 1 being a custom Hells Bay 16 with an 80hp Mercury and it floats in 6 inches of water and my 1472 Lowe dose about the same, and by the way I have a Swing Kayak!! and by the way most people that I know that have kayaks are like bicyclist they think they Owen the water and they are better then boat owners, I see it all to often!! We all need to respect each other on the water!!Unlike Jet skiers do!!! they are the biggest pain in the ass!!!
Face it your lost, it's only a matter of time before you get a bigger boat, then a bigger one. Because you have a boat with lots of room you will buy more and more fishing gear. Before you know it it will cost you $100 every time you go fishing. Not to mention boat and trailer registration costs. Then it's engine maintenance. Then to feed the habit you will need to become just another chad hoover 90% of the time selling useless fishing equipment and only 10% fishing.
Just recently sold my skiff and bought another kayak--Now we have one for everyone in the family. No insurance, no registration, no property taxes, and hardly any maintenance. We just love them.

Watching the night sky and seeing the occasional shooting star was one of my favorite times on a kayak. Spiritual is a good word for it, Ron.
I'm often out in the late afternoon early evening..partly so I can watch the sun set from the water. I end up just setting the fishing rod down and take in the wonder. Great for the blood pressure too.
Lies, they didn't have kayaks back then
Kayak or Jon boat love the heart you have in all the videos you put out. No matter what people say or think you keep doing what you do Marty.
Thank you, Travis

Interesting. Thanks for the imagination and effort you put into these videos.
glad to see you're back in the yak. Just got my first yak(used) and outfitted it. Used some of your ideas. Thanks for the vids. I enjoy them......

You got it, Rick. No worries
Awesome video production
so awesome brother love it.
Dad was Navy and taught me this way. Short words on the LEFT and long words on the RIGHT. Red Green
Port Starboard
Left Right
congrats on the boat my friend ..toppy
I've never seen the pontoons on a kayak before, is that to help the stability more?
what kind of rod and reels do you us when kayaking. i have a boat and plan on coming down and fishing Sarasota bay in January
I too started out with a kayak and ended up with a boat, but the boat is now for sale, its just not the same.
Do you still have this kayak
I rode a 50cc Yamaha Zuma for a few years before I got a motorcycle, now I'm back to a bicycle.
Why whisper? Fish don't feel sound waves above the water. They can only hear things that disturb the vibrations to their lateral lines. If you dropped something in the boat, they would hear that, but they ar immune to other sounds.
I think it depends on the personality type someone has and their level off responsibility and wanting to research things before jumping in without thinking. I always wanted a sports car and my mother bought me my 93 Camaro brand new for my graduation when I was 18. I never got a ticket, crashed, arrested or did anything stupid. I had no desire to speed. I love my car, named it, and still have it. It's the only car I have ever owned. Though I've always dreamt about a giant truck and that dream will hopefully come true soon. I thought long about what kind of boat I wanted as my first boat and the most important thing to me was being able to go into shallow water so I could get out and take pics and to be quiet so I wouldn't scare away birds and nature. I hope to use it primarily for wildlife photography. So after much thought and thinking about what habitats I prefer (found out I like estuaries best as they have salt but aren't open ocean) I decided on a kayak. Then it was research into what kind. I always do my homework before I get into any hobby or make a big purchase like camera equipment or a vehicle. I love my little boat and am having fun learning. Still so much to learn. Oh last thing. This is your channel so you can upload anything you want. Don't let people tell you what to post. I had a rude kid tell me that I'm worthy of being watched again now that I'm showing my plant collection after a year of not showing them. Well I do it for me not for him. Rude people like him get blocked.
How much did you pay for your jon boat?
Great video lad
Great video
What do you do for work
I put architectural foam and stone on houses
Nice one......keep em coming my friend.
Kayak fishing is like driving a country road. You see so much more on the back road lol
Nice vid.
I need to teach my kids to drive a stick.
making movies is a skill, you definitely have it
Ha my first car was an 87 ford tempo, and I love the canoe, prefer it over my boat.
I have a canoe with a trolling motor. Best of Both Worlds!
Hey Marty, I am not upset you ought a Jon boat, I am upset you used 7 different camera angles when shooting the interior of your truck making me look lazy when I make my videos. LOL
I didn't want folks getting bored with 7 minutes of me blathering on with my dialog ;^)
zoffinger Marty, that is what makes your videography different, you take all the time to make your videos more viewable and use video to tell a story. A lot of people just hit the record button.
I used to know someone who hated kayaking.
He got hit by a bus 🏃🚌
I lost my bus license.
Yakin'SC hahahahahaha
there are narcissists of all descriptions... anybody upset over you getting into a boat, or taking on a sponsor now and then are too wound up in their own crap to give other people space and grace to live their own lives...
I know this is an old post, I just wanted to encourage you to live your life on your own terms and don't worry about any naysayers trying to tell you what you can't and can't do!
Hey Marty, that's not a power boat. That is a mother ship! Tow that kayak to places paddlers only dream of paddling.
Wrong person!!!!!
What about alligators?
Don't stop the kayak in'. :-)
Alright Kon Tiki 2 wonder how many other people know that name

ha, this is funny to me because I understand where you're coming from except I've done things all arse about. Ive been brought up fishing from boats and at 39yrs old I'm doing up my first kayak. Unfortunately you're still driving on the wrong side of the road though so I can't take this vid or your learning curve too seriously.
haha, I like the right side of the road, thank you very much :)
Here you go bro
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man (with lyrics)
You must not know much about boating in the flats, I have 2 boats 1 being a custom Hells Bay 16 with an 80hp Mercury and it floats in 6 inches of water and my 1472 Lowe dose about the same, and by the way I have a Swing Kayak!! and by the way most people that I know that have kayaks are like bicyclist they think they Owen the water and they are better then boat owners, I see it all to often!! We all need to respect each other on the water!!Unlike Jet skiers do!!! they are the biggest pain in the ass!!!
So you are talking about safety I have a question where is your life preserver
Face it your lost, it's only a matter of time before you get a bigger boat, then a bigger one. Because you have a boat with lots of room you will buy more and more fishing gear. Before you know it it will cost you $100 every time you go fishing. Not to mention boat and trailer registration costs. Then it's engine maintenance. Then to feed the habit you will need to become just another chad hoover 90% of the time selling useless fishing equipment and only 10% fishing.
