Pelourinho is the best known part of the Historic Center of Salvador - Bahia - Brazil
Pelourinho is closely linked to the foundation of Salvador and the development of Brazil in the colonial era, and is one of the most visited places by tourists who go to Salvador, whether for a historical or cultural visit, Pelourinho places is the ideal starting point to discover Savior .
I loved getting to know this place, the historic houses, the people playing drums to the sound of olodum, the food, the capoeira dance. It is a unique place in Brazil.

You need to get inside the bay, there are many places around Ribera no turists are aware of. I highly recommend to find when the blocos have rehearsals and go, go to Ile Iye ensaio as well as Olodum. Visit the churches and the sacro museum, walk around the TCA. Visit the forts by sunset. Go and visit Irma Dulce museum and have a coffe with bolo de tapioca watching the locals. There is a Mercado by the ferry boats, visit it. If you are not scared to be assaulted there are so many things to see. Visit librería sebo…. Salvador used to be Cidade Magia. Read Amado and others… and visit the reconcavo and the costa di cacao…. Salvador is about extremes, love it or hate it

That place gets really lively around rehearsal days and weekends, specially at night! Now do you understand why I mentioned that the Pelourinho was a better area to find a hostel?! Good vibes only bro!

This is one of those silver lining situation, in that a beautiful place came out of something so vile! For those that don’t know Pelourinho comes from the word pelouro=whipping post, this was a market place for the slaves brought over from Africa and also a punishment place for them as well. They had a pillar in the middle of the square (pelouro) where they would whip the slaves who misbehaved in front of everyone to serve as a warning to those that would do the same!
