It is quite fascinating that submarine cables only use about 8 fiber pairs, where terrestrial cables usually use 100 to 600 fibers in a single cable. The main limitation are the repeaters / amplifier , that are placed every 40 - 100 km, it is very hard to build small and low power amplification with so many fibers. So they use only few fibers and few amplifiers in each repeater, but then use a lot of wavelengths on each fiber, so they can fit about 10Tbps of bandwidth per fiber. (i.e. using 40 or 80 channels on each fiber).
Tapping or sniffing for information without any filtering is also incredibly valuable as the data can be simply dumped into a data lake for processing at some unknown point in the future when the technology to filter easliy is invented. This invention has now happened in the form of AI. Sometimes even the data itself in of no importance but the way it is structured is. Huge issues on the horizon.
If you run a network, ISP or CDN and you want high capacity connectivity you can buy it from multiple under sea cable companies. The Internet is a fully open playing field so you could host your own routers, servers in data centres or in your own house or building. You can choose to have a single connection to the internet, multiple connections… or if you want to take full charge of your network then go direct to this guy
