Thank you, Jennifer! I machine embroidered six 10" blocks of children's bears but the blocks needed to be built up. Your tutorial showed me how to use multiple mitered borders for each block. Not only did the borders look beautiful but they also focused attention on the embroidery. Love your videos!

I just viewed your video for the 5th time and then proceeded to miter a pieced border which contained two 1/4 inch inset strips which demanded a sharp 90 degree turn. Your detailed, clear, and, I smile as I say it, cheerful instructions gave me the confidence to produce great results without a hole at the start of my border. Partial seams will feel way easy after this exercise! Thanks so so much!!!!

I'm telling you, that overhead camera showing how beautiful it comes out, makes this method SO convincing! And the lining up and multiple pinning really pays off, doesn't it? This also shows how a mitered striped border (with that pretty red narrow accent) dresses up a simple layout of blocks. Having beautiful fabric doesn't hurt either. :-) Very nice job, Jennifer.

I have always avoided the mitered corner until now I have a quilt made with the chocolate and Rose's fabric and a mitered corner would make the quilt but it's just sitting in my sewing box, well guess what I'm going to be doing this weekend thanks Jennifer.

I am new to quilting - my first project is a cushion cover with a fence post block and a 3 stripe border with a mitered corner (hopefully) . so i have been collecting methods . your method so far is the simplest and easiest to follow. BTW none of the other have mentioned the quarter inch at the corner of the quilt . thankyou!

I got so much out of the mitered border instructions. My border turned out perfect, except it wouldn't lay out flat unless I turned it over. Then the boarder that I wanted in the front ended up being in the back. What did I do.

Jen, Thanks for posting this mitered border video. I am about to add a pieced (outer + inner) mitered border around the outside of a quilt block...yep, a block, not a quilt but the same exact principles apply. And my block border is a pieced border made with a finished 5/8" wide cream outer border strip with a 3/8" green inner border added to it. I wondered how to handle those seam allowances between those 2 strips and now, thanks to you, I know to nest them. The only thing missing in this video is that you forgot to explain how to calculate the length of those border strips and how to center them on the sides. Other than that, you did a excellent job of explaining how to add a pieced outer border to a quilt. Exactly what I needed!

Well thought out and excellent demonstration. The only thing I might suggest you add is how you arrived at the length of your border fabrics to have enough to go around each side. Thank you for helping out new and more seasoned sewers & quilters.

Jennifer, can you do a tutorial on how to piece together material for a backing that is larger than fabric that greater than 44". I can't always find the backings that are 108" wide

+ Wanita Gons - From what I hear, a sewist might be alright with piecing the quilt's top, but have trouble with how your quilting stitches come out uneven because of the different thread counts. I believe quality quilting cotton's thread count is 80 (80 threads wide per inch?) vs. sheeting (flat bed sheets) which can be anywhere from 180 (older inexpensive sheets) up to around 700 tc for the more expensive ones.
So when doing the actual quilting stitches, your needle will go through the quilting cotton (your pieced top) easily, but then hesitate to get through the higher count sheeting threads. When the needle comes back up, it will be "yanking" it to get through the higher count threads and then come back up too fast or hard through the pieced top. That might be exaggerating the motions, but from what I understand, the issue will affect your stitching quality on your average domestic machine.
Now if you're just making a throw for the kids to use in the family room that might be okay - and would still be a thing of beauty to you and those who use it. But if I was spending around $12-$14 a yard for quality quilting fabric and put lots hours into assembling it, sending it off (and paying) for the longarmer to quilt it so I could give it as a special gift or hoping it will be a family heirloom, I think I'd use "quilt shop quality" cotton fabric for the backing.
OR: If you're going to use sheeting to make a quilt, I'd suggest using similar thread count of another sheet(s) to piece the top. Also, think about using a Microtex needle that's designed to handle higher thread counts. Maybe Jennifer can address this issue too in a future video :-)

Thank you! Very good tutorial! I saw one where they sewed the opposite way so there is no puckering. Does it make that much of a difference? She also did the 1/4 inch marking where not to sew the border at the corner. Just received this quilt kit last week and am anxious to get started and see how my mitering comes out.
It always helps to change direction to avoid puckering, so that's why a lot of people recommend it. It will also help not to pull or distort the fabric while sewing it. Let us know how your project turns out! - Morgan

Hi Sara - You can certainly use the miter technique on any of your corners - you'll just want to keep the print on the fabric in mind as some prints may not be as pleasing when placed like that. Hope this helps! -Michelle

Jennifer I have a quetion about the frixion pen. Since it disappears with heat does it come back if the quilts are in the cold?
No, unless you are in extreme cold conditions this ink should not reappear. We have tested it by using the frixion clicker pen on a piece of fabric and then placing this piece of fabric in the freezer, and it did not reappear. Great question! :)
Hello Jennifer...I'm doing my first double mitered border and your video was wonderful. (I never thought to join the strips together then miter them on the quilt) My question is when piecing the strips of fabric together are they sewn on straight or mitered together like binding strips. That's one thing I'm not able to find out. Thanks

I was able to get one end to work well, but cutting the border so one end lined up did not allow the other end to line up? What can I do differently the next time?
The only thing we can think of is that the stripe you are working with may have some slight variation (curves, pattern, etc.) that makes it so the ends don't match up absolutely perfectly, and sometimes that can happen since the measurements of the quilt are what determine where the pattern will fall. As frustrating as that can be to our quilter's eyes, it's just how it works out sometimes! If you pause our video at the very beginning you can see that the roses and leaves don't match up in a continuous, unbroken pattern, but it still looks great with the sharp miter and continuing stripes :) Hopefully that helps put your mind at ease!
Jenn, when you stated to fussy cut the (patterned) outer border, what was your strategy to do that? Did you place the same flower in your border material at each corner, or...? Beautiful quilt! Thx!!
You absolutely can do that! We just make sure the stripes line up. :)
Shabby Fabrics Thank you for clarifying - lining up the stripes makes sense. I couldn't figure out how you could end up w the exact same floral motifs in all four corners. Over thinking!!
It's not over-thinking! There are definitely ways to do that and you can if you want, but it's not something we always focus on :)
How do I calculate how much more of the border needs to extend/go past the sides? Some calculation with width of border?
Hi Jo - A good way to estimate would be to measure the width of your border (for instance, if your border is 5" wide, you'll add 5" to the length) and add an additional 6" to that number. That tends to be successful for us. Hope it helps! -Michelle
How do you finish the raw edge though.
You can finish it with a zig-zag stitch or serger if you have one. - Morgan
