    This series often speaks about Aang, Zuko, Iroh and Sokka in regards to positive masculinity, but I gotta add that all the male mentors are phenomenal representations of how much variety there is in 'masculinity'. From Monk Gyatso, to King Bumi, to Piandao, to Guru Pathik. And although Pakku was a terribly sexist person in the beginning, the way the show demonstrated how he eventually came to accept Katara and Aang and change his ways is also character development we often dont see in media.

  • @NegaHumanX
    @NegaHumanX ปีที่แล้ว +55

    I think a lot of toxic masculinity is based in fear.
    The kinds of people who get really into it tend to be lonely, unhappy, awkward kinds of people who think they have a lot to prove (similar to the types who get into cults). Many try to draw people towards them with the things they buy or the jokes they tell because they feel like nothing they have to offer from inside themselves would be worth it.
    A lot of commercials play into that insecurity to sell empty things to fill the void. It's like buying a body pillow because you don't have a girlfriend. Not only can't it fill the void, because it's an object and can't provide the love you actually want, it makes it less likely for you to find someone since you have this easy out to drop the immediate physical need on and go back to life as usual.
    The "rules" of being a man seem to work the same way. "A man can't show a woman his tears", is just plain sabotage. Every grown ass woman I've talked to about this has told me that their man feeling comfortable enough to cry in front of them (especially at emotional movies) is one of the hottest things they've ever experienced. Haven't talked to many gay people about this, but I doubt it's any different. If being a man is about being tough and powerful, then why are so many who view it that way afraid to let people see them cry? If you're that strong you should be able to handle something so simple a child can do it without shame or fear. You should be able to share who you are without being petrified at the idea someone won't like it.
    If you know who you are as a person, the good and the bad, how you come off to others in various situations, who you want to be as a person, parent, whatever, and you come to terms with it, knowing that you're human and will make mistakes and NO ONE CARES about those mistakes, then you have nothing to prove to anyone else. Confidence doesn't scream that it's here and everyone should pay attention to it because it's just so damn great, and better than everyone else, and everyone should love it. That's what insecurity does. Confidence is quiet, caring, and the last thing on the minds of people who have developed it. You don't just have it. You don't learn it. You don't buy it through an online course. You develop it naturally alongside your understanding of yourself, others, and the world around you.
    If you are a person who's afraid of getting to know people then you are not alone. Plenty of people are afraid of being rejected because wanting to be around other people is hardwired into our very human brains. On the other hand, this means that everyone on this planet is a potential friend. 8 Billion possible friends, lovers, family members, casual acquaintances who all who all have an instinctive desire to get to know you. Some suck, but that 1 person who made you feel like crap for 10 minutes is such a small fraction of your billions of potential options in your decades of potential life. Don't run away and hide behind some easily cracked, bullshit mentality that pats you on the back for doing the things that keep you alone in the first place. Just reach out. Everything gets easier with experience.

      The problem is what you said, some people are bad or not even bad but they still might not enjoy your personality. Like they can Laugh with you but they don't find you interesting. Depending on your personality a lot of people could feel that about you so what do you do just go through life without people who love you? You say confidence isn't something that's learned? I disagree. Someone who is naturally toxic shouldn't change because that's who they are? No? So why can't someone change undesirable traits about themselves? If you are unintelligent you study and learn to grow your intelligence. This is the problem with society it's instilled this belief that you should love yourself as you are. What if what you are sucks? How about we don't tell people who hate themselves to love themselves as they are. How about we tell them they should always know they have inherent worth as human beings and whatever is healthy for them to try and change advice them how to change it(confidence, awkwardness, style, jokes, NOT PLASTIC SURGERY which would be an unhealthy change to do). Even Zuko changed. Even when Zuko changed to the good side he still could have been an aggressive short tempered guy as we first knew him but he wasn't, He changed, Zuko didn't accept himself as he was and you shouldn't too. No one should. We should always try to grow as people. Our personalities, intelligence, humor etc and there is nothing wrong or unhealthy about that just as long as they know their inherent worth. What you are telling people saying they should accept what is already there, you are handicapping people dude. People who are not funny at all will most likely not get any healthy relationships because they can't get friends since they have no sense of humor and if they live by your mentality of accepting what's already there they will stay like that. Also many women don't like when their partner cries and lose respect for that partner when they cry. I'm not exaggerating many women were asked about this in a video. (English isn't my first language)

    True to himself, vulnerable in private and with trusted people, courageous to stand alone, driven, disciplined, self sacrificial, humble, rational and motivating. Pinnacle masculinity.
    To add to his idea of masculinity, allow me to use atomic theory. If Masculinity is a positive charge, and feminity is a negative charge, then immaturity is the neutral with no charge. Masculinity and feminity are opposites in their relationship to each other, but both are opposite to immaturity. Negative and positive are attracted to each other, but neutrons don't attract or repulse.
    The immature are pitiful, neither attractive or unattractive. Unlike neutrons, however, they have the potential to grow, to be masculine or feminine. So, men, ladies, build that masculine and feminine energy respectively. Build the charge, power up to attract the kind of partner you want, the kind of position you want, the kind of place you want to be in, because its possible, you just need to find that deep and personal reason to get it. Be the Iroh to the Zuko in your life.

    • @Billmaster115
      @Billmaster115 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @beril şevval bekret That may be what you see, but no, my idea of femininity is the same virtues of a man. A woman will not display these virtues in the same way a man will, and the display differences are subtle and are products of how male and female brains work. One is not superior to the other, however some people may have stronger virtues than others. There are many immature men and women out there, in fact today I would say most men and women are more immature now than ever.
      In the end, however, I would say masculine and feminine are defined by what they need to be in relation to each other, their lives, friends, family and responsibilities within their roles.

    You don't have to be Iroh, or even strive to be like Iroh... rather, be the best you that you can be. That would be enough for Iroh. Avatar the Last Airbender is my favorite show, and Iroh is one of those reasons. Leaves from the Vine is a heart wrenching moment, and I think it's important to show this powerful man crying. Yin and yang, balance...Emotional strength comes from expression, but also control, if emotions control you, you are like a child, an adult can say "I am hurting, I need help" without being less.
    Be true to yourself, if you enjoy something, enjoy it freely, but being mature is to not inconvenience others in the process, show respect for others.
    Men and women can do these things, without being less of a man or woman, media would say a "strong, independent woman" does what she wants, even if it treats someone else like trash, nor can she ask for help from anyone, because then she is being "weak", and in the same vein a strong man needs to be able to do anything while not showing any pain or emotion, asking for help is "unmanly", and a man does what he wants, even if it also puts others below him.
    I agree here, Iroh is an amazingly well written character who sets an example for everyone in avatar, Zuko needed to learn restraint for his emotions, and later it was Toph who needed to learn to ask for help, and all of this was not done high handedly, Iroh had the humility and respect to not put others down, he made sure to build them up.

    • @master_samwise
      @master_samwise ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I kinda regret using the word "opposite" in that context. It's not so much the opposite as it is the natural and necessary progression. Boyish immaturity in a grown man isn't exactly the opposite of masculinity, but rather a failure to grow and change. I guess you could define that as opposite (like I did in the video), but it's a hazy definition.
      You could say masculinity isn't really the "opposite" of anything. It's not the opposite of femininity, it's just a different way to express different virtues and traits. A piano is not the opposite of a violin. Masculinity is living in the golden mean of virtue, between the two vices on either extreme of a trait (humility between pride and self-shame, for example) and thus there really isn't an opposite.
      Glad the point resonated with you all the same.

He blames himself for forgetting what truly matters in life. He blames himself for not realizing sooner and takes the responsibility of his actions, not blaming others for the path he taught his son to go down. He then reflects on it and does better for Zuko teaching him to learn from the mistakes made of those who came before him. Especially when Zuko realizes it when he meets the dragons.

    I agree that masculinity and femininity aren't opposites. For masculinity and femininity, immaturity is the central problem that occurs. Men need to be strong enough to protect their family, to be a father that provides while women need to be wise in order to raise their child.
    But it's not a single parent job to raise a child to begin with.
    A mother can be strong but often needs to be the last line of defense, a father can be wise but only to give another perspective on life.

    • @Fordo007

      The big mistake comes when people assume 'masculinity' means 'I have the power and authority' and for someone to be 'feminine' they must be 'I am your servant and will not question you or challenge you'. Demanding authority and demanding obedience is weakness and the opposite of being masculine. Someone who is masculine carries themself in a way that they are trusted and the decisions and choices they make for themselves and others are decisions that people go along with because they trust that person. I see so many men whine and complain about women and how they aren't feminine because they don't blindly obey them and change everything about their lives to fit what 'the man' wants and decided... when those same men have not shown any reason why that woman should trust them.

    Tate's masculinity is a show and just self serving. He shows a picture of success and people pay him for lessons to emulate that success. He knows they probably won't succeed or find happiness and he doesn't care. He also has a desperate need to feel like the boss of every situation so to be an Alpha dog and will belittle anyone or come up with a fantasy that a certain group of people are after him to instill some false sense of importance.
    Iroh is the complete opposite. His personality, how he treated others and the lessons he imparted were from the heart. He helps other people because he feels its the right thing to do. He doesn't care how strong he is or perceived, he doesn't care about he throne. Iroh, for a large portion of the story was a homeless old man who traveled around with his angry nephew and still stayed who he was and was happy. He even forgave Zuko after the betrayal.
    One is real and trying to live his life like a 2000's rap music video(he tried rapping and sucked) and the other one is a cartoon character whom if more people emulated then the world would have been a better place ages ago.

    The thing about Masculinity and Femininity is that they are not mutually exclusive, and often share overlap. They also aren't just about what specific attributes they're associated with, but the context surrunding how those attributes are expressed or implimented.
    Stoicism and strength are often seen as masculine traits, but they are not truly masculine in-and-of themselves. Stoicism in the face of adversity, in order to keep calm and do what needs to be done? THAT is masculine. Strength for the purpose of controlling those around you, to further your own ends? That is not masculine.
    Gentleness and supportiveness are often seen as feminine traits, but just as with masculinity it's the context around these traits that is important. Gentleness in the face of necessary conflict is not feminine. Supportiveness for the purpose of helping those arround you succeed IS feminine.
    These traits can be embodied by anyone, regardless of their sex or gender. And the thing that I think many people don't understand about Femininity and Masculinity, which is REALLY important, is that those traits are not attributed to their respective sexes because society arbitrarily decided it should be so. These traits aren't attributed out of social construction, at least not entirely.
    Masculine traits are masculine because they're traits that men generally are naturally drawn too over other traits. Feminine traits are much the same, they're feminine because those are the traits women are naturally DRAWN too, not necessarily because they were told they need to.
    It's this lack of understanding that has caused creators to have their characters shun masculinity, while wrongly applying masculine traits to female characters. Having a female character be strong and stoic isn't the problem, it's that the writers believe masculinity is bad so they apply those traits in the worst ways, ways that arguably aren't masculine at all.
    It's almost paradoxical! They take away GOOD maculine traits from male characters, and then give female characters BAD masculine traits. It's honestly baffling how often they do this now. Masculinity and femininity aren't about expressing and embodying the associated traits, but HOW you impliment and express them. That's the difference between good (true) masculinity/femininity and bad (toxic) masculinity/femininity.

One who throws a temper tantrum the second things don't go his way? We're talking about how these traits apply to making one a better person, not a successful one. Being successful doesn't mean you're a good person.
      I think you're missing the point of what i was saying. Masculinity and femininity aren't morally exclusive concepts, yes, but the point is that true masculinity and femininity are the kind that you should aspire too.
      The discussion around what is truly masculine or feminine is about what kinds of traits should be aspired too as a method of self improvement. Real masculinity and femininity should be virtuous ideals to strive for.
      If you think you should ignore honorable ideals and virtues because they won't make you as successful as being a deciever and manipulator, then you have a long way to go in learning what's really important in life.

    We recently held a sermon in a Christian men's group I volunteer with that goes over the place anger has in our lives.
    James 1:19-20 "Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God."
    Anger can be a useful emotion. It can be the catalyst for correcting terrible injustices that we see in the world. But if it is not tempered with the guiding hand of purpose, then it ceases to be an instrument of righteousness to promote good in the world, instead, it becomes destructive wrath that can burn down the things we care about most. Probably not the spiritual aspect @Nuxanor was referring to but it seemed appropriate for the theme of the video.
    My two favorite verses touch on this a bit as well. So I will leave this for anyone who would like to read more.
    1 Corinthians 16:13-14 "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love."

    This may be a wierd pivot, but Legend of Zelda is based on 3 core virtues, that fit well in this context, and perhaps even help explain why they are virtues.
    Wisdom, to know what's right.
    Courage, to do what you know is right.
    Strength, to see it through.

    Bing a generous person is not being a man. It’s a part of being a man. Because being a generosity person or being a giving person as you put it is an action which mean being giving technically can’t be a personality or who you are only an apart of.
