I don't know if is just me, but it seems very noisy while driving. And I'm not talking about that artificially exhaust sound coming from the speakers. You use, maybe, some ny, more sensitive, microphones?🤔
Otherwise, yet another great review 😁👍

The new 1 series is a car you need to see in person. It’s way more dynamic that in photos. It was the same with the 8 series.

I had a relaxed 30 minute test drive in a m135i yesterday (current car is a m235i) and my initial impressions:
    - the engine is surprisingly responsive and flexible despite 'losing' 1000cc and 2 cylinders
    - the gearbox is really smooth at least in comfort mode
    - very agile and direct steering, not quite mini levels but close
    - the interior is a huge leap forward, I loved the HUD
    - doesn't sound as good as the N55 with mp exhaust but the exhaust has slightly deeper tone than I expected, sounded decent.
    - tyre and wind noise is impessively low for a smaller vehicle
    - it looks so much better IRL than on screen
    - the ride is quite firm but not harsh even on poor surfaces (non adaptive with 18"s)
    - the seats are really comfortable with plenty of support
A very, very different car compared to its predecessor but not all in a bad way, despite what the internet says.
The dealer can get me a delivery for late October if I order in the next week, decisions, decisions!

@@Alex-zi6ym think so too, especially the interior! Apparently it drives better then an A-class according to some journalists. During our test ride it drove really sporty and not like a fwd car which is good and strange.

It's great that BMW are allowing us to option the 1er as luxuriously as the upper end models. A buyer should not be penalised for preferring a smaller luxury car.

I agree. The interior is great. The Audi S3 is a bit kind of 2 dimensional. All so called fast small cars are called sporty so are uncomfortable and appeal to the youner generation. I am er...older shall we say so I need some luxury and speed. I could go on.....

    -No RWD
    -No Straight Six
    -Uglier design
BMW have killed any reason to buy a 1 Series vs it's competitors, they're all much the same. Its just a fast hatch in a sea of other fast hatches.

    • @skagerstrom
      @skagerstrom 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Love these commets :P It those was the only reasons to get it - maybe it wasn't that good of a car anyway? But yeah - most drivers never drive hard enough to feel a difference between FWD, RWD or AWD. There even was this famous survey when owners actually thought their 1-series was FWD. So I think they're safe on that point. Same with the straight 6. BMW probably sell more 320D Tourings in Europe than they sell cars in the United States of Cubic Inches per year. So again - they're pretty safe.
The design is in the eye of the beholder. I really like this one except for the front end. First 1-series was the ugliest car in it's class by far so they have gotten better no matter how you see it.

I as an actual 330d driver didn’t like the predecessor 1 model, but this one seems to be a tempting alternative to me when it comes to changing my company car next year. Excellent review of the 135i msport. I’ve ordered just awaiting delivery, when bmw took me out for test drive it was only about a 4-5 mile drive, wasn’t enough to really appreciate the car, but based on the review and different driving modes you put the car through has given me the confidence in the purchase of the BMW. I trading in mk7 golf gti which is an excellent car and couldn’t fault it in the 6 yrs I’ve owned, so I was nervous about the BMW is it going to be as good? So the review answered a lot of my questions. Keep up the good work.

    Long Rant Alert!
Problem: BMW said they shifted towards FWD because they asked their 1Series clients and saw that they wouldn't mind it (which i doubt a bit), as they were more interested in practicality than performance. Yet they advertise that they still want it to be as dynamic if not more as the last car (which it clearly can't). What they miss here is that the practical audience already had the 2 Series Active Tourer for their small practical car. The 1er was always the RWD 5-door fun entry car. An enthusiast with a small family is just forced into the 3er now.
So why does BMW even bother to make an M135 when they clearly set it in the non-enthusiast category with the active tourer. The Active-Tourer doesn't get an M235 either.
Solution: Keep the 1 series RWD hot-hatch . Keep the 2 series as RWD coupe . And just make the 2er active tourer a bit smaller and cheaper !
For whoever is interested take a listen at What BMW said back in 2004 when asked if BMW would be devalued if they entered the hatchback market with Forward-Drive. link:

Hi Thomas, just a personal opinion that maybe you would also agree - I think that in 2019, all the premium german brands cars, especially their highest trims, should have galvanized buttons. Honestly, i cannot accept that the newest A6 or this BMW right here - their controls for the seats to be so plasticy. I expect at least something shiny. And in this aspect the Mercedes always nails it - especially with their positioning of the controls on the door - all of their buttons are galvanized.

Thanks for that good review. I find the old 1 series more having its own visual profile to be honoust. Space: you could also sit in the old series, with the remark that you could not sit behind yourself. But be honoust, how many 6'2 people are sitting normally behind eachother in a car. You can easily compare this new one series with a "large" VW Passat from 30 years ago. Nobody complained 30 years ago about the lack of space in that Passat.. . It is really not a small car for most circumstances. For the old series that I own; we can easily drive comfortably with kids for longer trips, the only real disadvantage is the luggage space but with a roof box also that problem is solved. Already the 2015 series is driving as good as the 3 series in my opinion, I find my car from driving perspective alsmost perfect, the only thing I miss is the straight six. But comparing my "old" 1 series with an X1 or a 2 series...they don't stand a chance, I drove both and I came to the conclusion that it is very difficult to buy a new car and get a feeling of progression. Since I want a 4WD (living in Switzerland) and not a diesel anymore (unfortunately the diesel engine is doomed by law ) So that gives me at the moment only this M135i, if I would stick with BMW. I would have to buy a two year old one, since it blows my budget. And these kind of cars mostly are difficult to buy on good quality. Often tuned and not properly handled. What I like is the very good interior upgrade and ofcourse a power boost (which can be dangerous due to all the one-eyed-bandits allong al the roads in Europa that like to make pictures and sending you bills with free Flensburg points.. )

First of all, thanks for the detailed reviews. However, it's difficult to understand how in such long reviews you guys never talk about the security features, show how the different security systems work, the parking cameras and sensors, a proper demo of the head-up display, a demo of the nav system, the different seat settings and how they are displayed on the screen, etc. Nobody focus on these things, and as a BMW owner, I think those are the really important features that actually help you enjoy the car. The whether it feels better or worse, or whether it accelerates in 5 or 6 secs, that's all stuff that only fan boys care about. Most of the time, you drive in or around cities, at low speeds but with a lot of hazards around, and so how the car guides you and keeps you safe is a lot more important, in my opinion. Just my 2 cents.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks! In every review we show the GPS, the head-up-Display and show the assistance systems live in the driving part - not sure if you watched the whole thing?

    • @eddie8742
      @eddie8742 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@autogefuehl Thanks for replying.
Yes, I've watched many of your reviews, and I know you show them but superficially, never going in detail of how they work and what they can do in real life, stimulating hazards for example, or how the nav and the head-up work together, or mentioning basic things like how many airbags are included and how they work, or how pre-sense effectively work. The same is true for night driving and the systems that play a role in those situations, such us the adaptive lightning or the night vision.
Maybe you guys have shown it every now and then, but I haven't seen it in the level of detail I think those systems deserve to be analyzed, and not only mentioned, and since you're the only ones doing long and detailed reviews, you're particularly well positioned to go into those often ignored areas. I think this is one of the main reasons why people think that comparing a Tesla to a BMW or Audi makes sense, because what really matters in everyday driving gets ignored.
Since most cars have the exact same options, maybe you could make a video covering only the technology and options, which would be pretty much valid for all 2019/2020 BMWs or other brands.

Great review. I actually have some questions. It is quite hard to find a dealer who has one as a demonstrator so questions are inevitable. Firstly the seats: is the Alcantara the most comfortable? I tried a car with black leather and it was ok but not really special. Secondly the suspension set ups: with the 18” wheels you get the adaptive suspension option but not with the 19” wheels where you get M Sport. Is the M Sport with19” wheels in comfort mode ok, or is the adaptive suspension with 18” wheels more comfortable especially on bumpy (UK) roads? Sorry about the details but as I said there are so few cars to try. Thanks very much and keep the good work.

Excellent review ! At least someone focusing on real things, not only "sporty stuff" and whinners saying "boo boo that was much better before" (which is understandable but that's life, world evolves and not always in everyone's wanted direction). Also, for having an Aisin 8-speed gearbox on my current car, one important thing to understand is that this gearbox adapts its laws to the driver. So far, there're a drastic change after let's say a thousands and little more kilometers in its behavior. So it can be harsh sometimes especially in Sports mode indeed but in normal (comfort) mode it's a real soft gearbox. My M135i should be delivered in mid-Dec (cross fingers) and I'm alreasy loosing patience (lol).

Great, I FEEL NO GUILT NOT OWNING THIS "BMW".
    - No rear-wheel drive or even a proper longitudinally mounted all-wheel drive like Subaru or Mitsubishi. Instead a cheap FWD.
    - No naturally aspirated engine
    - No six cylinder
    - No hydraulic steering
    - No manual handbrake
    - No analogue throttle
    - No manual gearbox
    - No two-door
    - No lightweight chassis (and a rather fat, heavy one instead)
    SHAME ON BMW. I have owned/leased a 323i E21, a 325i E30, a 328i E36, a 330Ci E46, a 130i E81, a Z4 3,0Si E85 and, the very best, the sorry missed M3 E30. This new chunk of loveless and tacky metal instead is a ton, sorry a ton and a half, of RUBBISH.
I really feel good not coveting in the least this mammoth.
Most "jounalists" (rather commercial promoters in many cases) have the servile task to encourage the consumerist industry their very jobs depend on. They would not dare to criticise modern cars for the loss of driver envolvement and sensorial experience.
BMW and the despicable Quandt family that owns it are a perfect example of a former enthusiasts' enterprise, where engineers used to create works of art and now greedy, filthy rich execs override and kill all passion in the pursuit of yet more obscene dividends.
A great car to feel good of not owning or ever driving.
