Anyone with dogs or cats needs to be very careful using anything with tea tree oil because it is very toxic to them. I am thinking of trying this mixture, but I will have to be very careful as I have dogs. Even if they lick a spill up off the floor, it can cause severe damage.
I just tossed some pink Princess props because I had to remind myself that they’re literally so cheap now and mines not even that high of variegation, why care for them for months for what…to not even be able to sell them for $10? 😂 I have to reason with myself sometimes
I’ve marked chapters so that you can easily jump around this video & re-visit anything you’d like. Also tried to link everything mentioned in the description. Let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with though. Thanks for watching everyone, you are the best 💚 happy November!
@@wildfern I think you mentioned it in this video if not I’ll look for it I always binge watch your videos. I’m so glad to see the spark in your eyes again Happy For you sweetly, God Bless you and your Family family 🙏🏽❤️
What I’ve noticed with most pests is that even if the plant doesn’t have any on them the surfaces around them could have lingering pests. I’d recommend wiping down the surfaces where the pests are every once in a while!
@wildfern Your pingdom is so cool! Could you find out the name of the long skinny leafed one with the purple flowers in this video? I want it! In the spring, I'm going to build a pingdom! I just have to find a big hunk of lavarock or pumice! But I have a cool bowl.
Love these reset videos! You’re so organized! I know you’re always saying that you feel like organization is an area for improvement, but I honestly think you’re doing great! It’s for sure inspiring 💚
This is so random but I love the flooring in ur house, I have the cursed millennial grey laminate and am jelly of all the warmth that brown brings to ur videos.
I was about to lose my shite today - too much work, too little results, lost in the vortex. This is just what I needed. Thank you for bringing calm. I appreciate you.
Hey Fern, since your original video on the diy spray I have treated with the spray multiple times and I'm a changed woman ( and my plants are also changed for the better). My advice to you is to rewatch the original video before or during every treatment, I have learned something new from the same video every time I have watched it. Thank you so much for sharing your planty wonderland with us 🌱💚 appreciate you!!!
You have made me feel SO much better about not keeping every single little plant, especially props I’ve been struggling with for a long time 💚💚 we’re just doing our best lol
Christmas cactus was my first plant (even before the craze when I started collecting them) and when it started blooming I could look at it for hours! If I remember correctly I had a plant with red flowers. Unfortunately, I fried it on the south window 😅 Every year I am tempted to buy it again despite the fact that my previous one (and blooming pink!) was a thrips habitat and flew to the trash. Too bad I can't find variegated one anywhere, it's really lovely.
Omg!!! Your variegated cactus is so beautiful!!! It even has variegated pink and white flowers!!! I have a non variegated thanksgiving cactus. At the moment it is blooming bright pink flowers. So cool!!!
I got those 5 inch self watering pots in white, love them, I feel like it’s important to flush the semi hydro on occasion and the water level is super handy I get alcohol and peroxide in bulk as well, works for so many different things
tip for removing tough stickers/residue: lemon essential oil! just saturate the sticker with a few drops and let it sit for a minute & it should peel right off 🍋
Your Thanksgiving cactus! I always look for her in your videos 😊 The hoyas who have mealies..make sure you change the soil and check the roots. This is the only way I fully get rid of them.
Omg!! How many videos have we had this week? I had requested a daily video or more videos. I am absolutely thrilled. I love to watch them when I get home from work 😅😊😊
I get my rubbing alcohol from the dollarstore. Super cheap. I also started adding mineral oil to my sprays in addition to the alcohol and castile soap. Got that idea from Kaylee Ellen. Neem oil is toxic (hence Ag Canada doesn’t permit it as a pest treatment, just a “leaf shine”).
Love this laid back video. I am down in my back so in the recliner on heating pad today and crafting while watching you!! I wonder how big those acrylic boxes come. I have too tons of Hoya in totes but the clear acrylic is appealing to me.
I definitely don't keep every propagation I start. If they are just not rooting like the rest or not growing...not keeping them. I ordered some soil and stuff from Amazon 😅 I think this is plant supply season
Probably unpopular opinion but I truly love the sunstressed look your books are getting! Kinda gives them character of the life they lived with a plant mom lol
Love your ping garden. They have grown so much. I did one myself after seeing yours and all the plants are living but growing very slow . That’s fine as long as they don’t die. Another great video.❤
Just wanted to say thank you for introducing me to variety of genuses. The more I watched you the more I felt ready to try growing other genuses like pings, anthuriums and begonia. I am having such an amazing time learning and growing them and now it looks like I will be getting a thanksgiving cactus too😋❤
I do very, very little propagation, so don't want or need giant prop boxes. I have been using the perlite-in-a-ziploc-bag method, but bought two clear boxes after you showed them recently. I chopped up my Hoya 'Michele' to start her over, and cut the vine of my Hoya 'June' to prop for a fuller pot. I am TERRIBLE at spacial relations, so of course they didn't fit the way that I had envisioned. I had to use both boxes for the 'June' cuttings and improvised with something else for the 'Michele' cuttings. I hope they work out for me because I really like being able to just check on them at a glance. Other comments . . . I have a real Thanksgiving cactus problem . . . I have many and buy another one or two pretty much every year. But I don't have a variegated one. Definitely a wish list plant for me! It made me smile when you held up the two books that you did. I read both of them. I like "Lessons in Chemistry," but I LOVED "Anxious People." I really love Fredrik Backman's sense of humor.
Hi Fern, I hope you’re well. I love these videos, they help kick my butt into gear. I also love making labels. I just made the cutest plant tags for my props that I’ll be selling off. Thank you once again for your time and energy. Grateful 🌿✨
I use sistema containers for prop boxes, they are stackable, seal well and are clear and look lovely on my plant shelves with plants in them...never got into large prop boxes. I'm old school (and old) and have only really ever propagated directly into soil substrate and occassionally water.
Perfect timing.. I have a minor operation on Monday morning so I want to do my nails and your video will keep me watching long enough so I don’t mess them up.. 😂Love your glass measure cup. I had one like that but when I was soaking black beans overnight they expanded so much the glass shattered 😮Costco has huge pots of Christmas cactus
Funny you mention that...I just finished watching Baby Reindeer and then Sweet Bobby back to back this week. I felt unwell after. A lot to take in. Still thinking about it days later. Then you post and rejuvenate the vibes lol bless.
I've been using those self watering pots for ages and I love them. One thing to watch out for is the indicator - it doesn't always go down. I jiggle it a bit and then it reads properly. No biggie for the price and quality. 💚😊
I cannot find a begonia paulensis anywhere! I did not even know it was a plant I needed to have until you had it, and I keep checking different places over the last couple months. It is so cool! Thank you for the relaxing content as usual 🙂 it is my favorite. Labeling is very satisfying to me by the way.
Hi Fern 🕊im Pernille from Denmark, i love watching your videos and following your day to day life ❤ my plant favorites are Hoya, Begonia, Fern and succulent 🥰 Im living in a house so I also have a garden 👍 Have a great day 💗
You ever tried nematodes? You could pop some in each plant as you repot, or if the mealies are popping back up randomly, pop some nematodes in as the eggs are probably in the soil.
You should not feel bad about keeping all propagations. Or throwing away plants either. The plant sprayer i prefer the one with the long wand is much easier to get between plants angles. I don’t understand either why mealybugs come back when you have cleared it on a plant after a week or 2 they appear again. There are times where i want to give up on my Hoya’s cause of them. With Spider mites, Thrips they appear more on tropical plants. I hope to find a variegated thanksgiving cactus one day. I do like the ones that have the scallop shapes compared to the spikey ones. Looking at the picture the Easter shape leaves are nicer. I only come across the Christmas ones in the garden centre. Also i like the white flowers more not into colourful blooms.
For the begonias... mine are getting pretty leggy... Do you ever prune them back to get better growth? If so I would love to see a video on that. Love your content!
Do you think the Miracle Gro fertilizer may be drawing the mealies? Just a thought I had. I used foliage focus and superthrive over the summer but starting this fall I started using the calmag, kelp, silica and the foliage focus and superthrive. I alternate, but I have been looking for an increase or decrease in pests. And the Netflix show about the catfishing...omfg!!! I was dying for her...
I went out today looking for a variegated cactus and found a variegated jade! I can't imagine how fast your plant collection would grow if one kept all their propagations. 😮
Flu shot is wiping me out today, so happy I get to relax with a Fern video ❤️ Unrelated but does anyone know if she still has a begonia autumn ember or euphorbia white ghost??
Heyo! Love your videos! I just wanted to give you a heads up that if you continue using the same pest treatment over and over again for an extended period of time the pests will develop resistance. It's best if you have at least two pest control methods that you rotate through. Otherwise your diy pest treatment will stop working after a while becuase the insects will have developed resistance to it. I am an agriculture student and this is a super important thing we learn about, so wanted to let you know! Like you should be fine for now but just consider it for your future plans.
Your variegated Thanksgiving cactus is stunning!!!! It’s one of my favorite plants. I’m struggling to keep mine alive. Please share your personal care tips. Thanks
I just noticed that my Thanksgiving cactus is starting to bud. I’m obsessed with finding a variegated one now 😂 The label maker is on sale for $17.99 today so I picked one up.
Thank you! Minimal watering while they’re rooting and high light. Once they’re rooted I water about once every week. The orchid mix mine are in is very well draining so I think they love that!
I love your videos and this one was no exception! Except for the fact that I couldn't see your begonia Paulensis in the background which is something I lust after in your videos! I live in Florida and I cant find one in the US to buy. I actually just spent 2 weeks on Vancouver Island and now that I am more familiar with the lay of the land , I wanted to ask you if you are comfortable sharing what city / town you live in. My stay was in Courtenay as a base, but I was with two friends, and we did a lot of exploring including Eucluelet and Tofino as well as some parks and some great short hikes. We were there for 10 days so we had some awful weather and some great weather and I really enjoyed my visit. I actually donated a whole bunch of my clothes to charity so that I could bring back the Driftwood and other pieces of wood that I found on the beach. A couple of pieces I'm going to use to mount Staghorn ferns. I plan to be back in the San Juan Islands this spring so I would like to visit Victoria again and spend a little more time there.
I was wondering what Fern used to treat her mealies too! I found mealies on my small variagated compacta this week! ☠️ Went into panic mode... took it out of the pot, removed the old substrate and swished it around in warm water mixed with rubbing alcohol and castile soap. When I repotted I put bonide systemic granules in the soil. So, I hope those buggers and their progeny are ☠️🚫
Great video😊 I just had a question concerning your DIY pest treatment: i really wanted to try this exact same mixture last year but then i realized that peppermint is extremely toxic to dogs and that even just the smell of it could cause problems to their health. Not to scare you or anything because maybe the amount youre using is very minimal but if i were you id reconsider
Try Mosquito Bits for mealy bugs! I tried so many different things for things in my soil but this product worked amazingly and very quick for me. Works best if you mix it with the soil though
I've been getting the bulk packs of isopropyl alcohol from Costco, and am pricing out the Amazon difference. Don't feel bad, we all feel insane doing this. It's just part of the gig I think.
Seems like because many of your plants are basically 1-sided out of their pots - and that the calyx shelf does get light from the window - that the shelves could be more useful to you as more space for the collection. I know that you are always in need of more space.
Could you dilute the diy pest control and it might not damage as much? Just curious I love all your content on both channels thank you so much for keeping us planty people entertained!
Anyone with dogs or cats needs to be very careful using anything with tea tree oil because it is very toxic to them. I am thinking of trying this mixture, but I will have to be very careful as I have dogs. Even if they lick a spill up off the floor, it can cause severe damage.
Great point, I will pin this to remind folks to practice caution ⚠️
I needed to hear "You don't need to keep all your propagations". They tend to weigh on my mental health and I get overwhelmed if I have too many.
Exactly! It’s not worth it. Glad to give you that reminder 💖
I got rid of a few that I wasn't vibing with yesterday and it felt GREAT.
I just tossed some pink Princess props because I had to remind myself that they’re literally so cheap now and mines not even that high of variegation, why care for them for months for what…to not even be able to sell them for $10? 😂 I have to reason with myself sometimes

You say you “treat your mealies”. Do you use your homemade pest treatment on them, or something more aggressive?
I was wondering what Fern used to treat her mealies too! I found mealies on my small variagated compacta this week! ☠️ Went into panic mode... took it out of the pot, removed the old substrate and swished it around in warm water mixed with rubbing alcohol and castile soap. When I repotted I put bonide systemic granules in the soil. So, I hope those buggers and their progeny are ☠️🚫
Great video😊
I just had a question concerning your DIY pest treatment: i really wanted to try this exact same mixture last year but then i realized that peppermint is extremely toxic to dogs and that even just the smell of it could cause problems to their health. Not to scare you or anything because maybe the amount youre using is very minimal but if i were you id reconsider
Yay I'm early for this! ❤
👏 thank you for watching!
Fern I need to know where you get all your planty shirts 😭♥️
Do you know if the plant mix your using works on flat mites on Hoya? Help
Try Mosquito Bits for mealy bugs! I tried so many different things for things in my soil but this product worked amazingly and very quick for me. Works best if you mix it with the soil though
Oh reallyyy 👀 haven’t heard that before!
can you talk about your pingdom in the winter? I know pings can go dormant but I don't want to over water?
I've been getting the bulk packs of isopropyl alcohol from Costco, and am pricing out the Amazon difference. Don't feel bad, we all feel insane doing this. It's just part of the gig I think.
Seems like because many of your plants are basically 1-sided out of their pots - and that the calyx shelf does get light from the window - that the shelves could be more useful to you as more space for the collection. I know that you are always in need of more space.
Omg yay im so early!! Love your vids!!🪴🌱💚
you are 👏 thank you so much!
Could you dilute the diy pest control and it might not damage as much? Just curious I love all your content on both channels thank you so much for keeping us planty people entertained!
