      I didn't know that Tyrannomon was the very first Digimon. That's cool. There's a similar case with Rhydon from Pokemon. I don't recall if it was actually the first pokemon ever created but in the code for the original games it's marked as number 1 despite it being number 112 in the pokedex.

    Digimon TCG is not only going as far as the show, but seems to be calling back to other Digimon properties as well. The Analog Youth Tamer card in this set is the playable character from the PS1 Digimon World game that was releases in 97 (two years before the original TV series), but they've even brought in the V-Tamer version of Taichi and the Cyber Sleuth characters.
    The franchise does a good job of trying something new while keeping some level of nostalgia with each new story. Even Frontier and Xros Wars, which aren't considered as good as other seasons, weren't necessarily bad either. (The TCG even still kept Frontier's gimmick by having Agnimon and Lobomon able to be evolved from Tamers, now only of they made a version of Masaru that was able to join the fight himself to keep up with Savers' gimmick...)

    The artwork for this set isn’t just in the old style. It *is* old art, either a Digimon’s official artwork or, in the case of the option cards, artwork used on a card from the original card game (hyper coliseum). So very little new art, but they know it hits those nostalgia buttons. And then they made the alt arts of the cards practically identical to frames of the original game! The Digimon TCG really has been embracing its past. Analog youth is the player character from the original Digimon World, but there are tons of references to that game in the other sets.

    • @jironamos7650

    The awesome thing about nostalgia for our generation is being able to really connect with our kids on the things we're into. My parents way back understood that I was into things like Digimon, but it wasn't something I could talk about with them. Nostalgia is a great tool to connect people across generations (although unfortunately we've seen it be a cash grab a lot over the years). I have been able to befriend and mentor (and therefore grow myself as an adult) younger friends over the years by connecting on these shared hobbies and that is a wonderful thing.

    I've heard a lot of good things about this game over the past year, other than some early supply issues. The cards look good! Nice, clean design and well-rendered artwork. Will have to check out your how-to-play video later. Regarding your question about nostalgia for today's children, for my son's generation (he's a teenager now) it's all about Roblox and Minecraft. I think TCGs need to appeal to all generations, since there are so many other forms of entertainment these days.

    And thanks for highlighting such a good property on your channel, Professor. As someone who has been collecting these cards for the new game, I just want to let folks know how generous it is. For most sets, if you get 2 boxes, you'll have a full playset of all commons and uncommons and a good chunk of the rares and super rares. It is a very affordable game.

    Honestly my favorite purchase of the year. I got it a few months ago, and had so much fun opening it. I used to get a pack whenever I went to the warner bros. store, and I remember when they were closing the store, everything was like 75% off. So my mom just said "Grab what they have left, might as well." It was so exciting getting a lot of the rare cards back then, and I still have a lot of them (Though I wish they were in better condition and I thought about sleeves at the time.) But this set just made me remember opening packs with my brother, and we both got back into the game because of this. It's different now, but actually more fun. I'm hoping it catches on more, because I'd love to get more games in at local stores.

  • @tym6217

    Speaking of the "collectible" part of card games one of the epitomes of this back when I still played YuGiOh were ghost rares. The highest rarity cards in main series packs. I always said they were made purely for collectors. If you played a normal game with them they frankly just looked like a gross washed out silver splotch on the table. But I knew 1 person who had collected every ghost rare in the game and had binder pages full of them. And from a collector standpoint in a binder where you could hold them up to the light and turn the binder to get the full holographic 3d rainbow effect, those were some awesome looking binder pages. Certainly much nicer than when theyre just sitting on a table not catching the light or the angle right. As far as regular gameplay goes imo ultimate rares were the neatest looking foiling process not only in YuGiOh but in any card game I ever played.

    I feel like digimon is doing exactly what you want card games to do. Each pack comes with 2 rares, which decreases the value of all rares, and Select few rares are over $20. If you want Max rarity of a card, then you get alternate arts, but those cards also come available in 50 cent form. The game is incredibly accessible, for instance if you want to buy a Box of this set, it's only about 50 bucks. You probably not going to get your money back, but you are going to have access to a whole lot of cards that are playable

    A lot of the discussion about the artwork actually does happen with the LGS model for fantasy flight games. For Lord of the rings LCG for example each game piece came in the sets that they originally came in, which are constantly being reprinted. However they would release alternate artworks for the hero cards at each convention that happened throughout the year. So what happened was their were alternate artwork hero cards that became pricey in value, but they were essentially the same game pieces. It means that there is something to collect for those people who desire it, but those people are still playing the same game as everyone else.

      @@56andru What I like about Digimon's competitive scene is that most casual decks you build aren't really far off from competitive variants, and cards serve such a wide variety of functions, that even less expensive alternatives to other cards might find use in specific matchups or strategies. What I'm saying is there's a lot of creativity with what you can build. I personally think if you're aiming for competitive play, you should start with the Gallantmon starter deck. Digital Hazard (EX2) is releasing outside of Japan soon and it has a lot of support for the Growlmon/Gallantmon strategy. But the Veemon one can be great too, I'm just not as familiar with it personally.

    On a side note for a VERY important video topic, I'd recommend you check out the problem with promo cards that aren't reprinted, if you want to play a Diaboromon deck, you need 4 copies of a promo pack exclusive Diaboromon, because they're not reprinted, staple cards like these are $50 and in this case, its for a tier 3 deck ar best.

    • @sushiyumyumz5522
      @sushiyumyumz5522 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I highly reccomend noone waste money on this game. Itd turning into a power creep 4 turn game that eill be dead very soon. LGS turnout has been dropping. Most decks require x4 $50 cards. Save your money.

    • @SleepyNubis
      @SleepyNubis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@sushiyumyumz5522 if your gonna bad mouth the game at least get your info right, theres like 2-3 cards that cost near that total and only one of them is a 4 off, and theres a lot of decks at a more reasonable price that are just as strong, hell the championship deck was gabu bond and that ones practically budget

    • @SleepyNubis
      @SleepyNubis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While promo pack is a problem just wanna add with newer support promo diaboromon becomes just a 1 off, real problems more promo keramon that os a 4 off still and infermon also run. Not to mention rising price of sunarizamon and palmon promo probably gonna rise back up soon

    • @SleepyNubis
      @SleepyNubis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Oliver usually tcgplayer the prices have been stable for a while now, and even the last set is surprisingly cheaper then expected especially considering lucemon chaos mode ended up so cheap when regular lucemon is still the most expensive card in the game.
      Besides that just my LGS making trades, there are still some overpriced cards due to how difficult some stuff is to find such as certain promos but they at least avoided some of the problems bandais other game dragon ball super tends to run into where promos are just overly expensive right from release because they never arrived everywhere(except the diaboromon promos that we never got due to corona and most people only sell those tournament promo boosters sealed)

    • @zragon3k
      @zragon3k 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sushiyumyumz5522 Current power creep is fine. the higher level digivolutions weren't strong enough to justify their cost. As for 4 turn game, you may want to tune your deck a bit. You can use blockers and options to prolong your losses longer.

    I would like to offer two corrections to the description of LCGs: First, original Netrunner (from 1996) was a CCG, it was under the same "Deckmaster" brand as Magic: the Gathering. The Fantasy Flight Games reboot from 2012 is an LCG.
    More importantly, LCGs still have room for collectability and even speculation. Back in 2015 I sold about $1,000 of FFG LCG Netrunner cards. They were different promos that were only available through organized play. In particular, an Eli 1.0 from Worlds 2013 sold for $100 each, and 2012 GenCon Private Security Force sold for even more. Furthermore, many Android: Netrunner players (including Y.T.) are proud of their binders which are chock-full of gorgeous alt-art and promo cards. I love both CCGs and LCGs, and I think it's important to stress that despite having no booster packs or rarities, well-designed LCGs still have a collectable element.

    The opening about a need to "Grow up and give up the card games" but, then, we never really had to... and everything surrounding it was like the warmest hug. Thank you Prof for such an amazing video :)

    I genuinely got misty eyed at "it's OUR stuff," and full-on lost it when you said "It's okay for us to like what we like." I've met more cool adults playing MTG at my local stores than just about anywhere else. Not to mention I'm a cool adult playing MTG at local stores!

    15:40 I mean if you look at PR’s original counterpart Super Sentai, the stories for each series/season are their own give or take the occasional crossovers and Anniversary series, but still work on the multiverse approach.

    Literally just opened our own box of this set yesterday! Got into the game because of you Prof and it has been a lot of fun. I treat it much more like a board game than a tcg especially since it's card pool is nowhere near magics level. The game is a blast. I hope you go over the Starter decks! I think they are great for people who want to make a battle box and start playing asap :)
