      Yes and no. This is of course not just for science, but there is value in it being crashed more random than the lab crash tests. Also the rescue workers aren't just there for show, they really do get to do their work on the cars.
      Btw. it is a regular thing Volvo works with the rescue workers, whenever there is an accident involving a Volvo in and around Gothenburg, Sweden the Volvo guys examine what happened, what damage the car took at what injuries the accidents caused. Meaning Volvo collect and use real world crash data in their work and it is something they have been doing for fifty years.

    • @danielwonttellya5175
      @danielwonttellya5175 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The passengers definitely would not survive that. What happens if you have a crash like that is as follows. If you drive 50kmh and have an immediate stop the seatbelt keeps your body in place. However your inner organs are not connected to the seatbelt so they keep getting the force of around 10.000 newton (if you drive 50 km/h) which equals a weight of 1 ton pulling on your inner organs. These so called „decelerationtraumatas“ lead to ruptures in your aorta and other organs. To visualize this even more: if your aorta is ruptured you bleed for 1 minute and for one minute only because an open aorta rupture bleeds with about 5-6 liters per minute (that’s all you have).
      Conclusion: you would most certainly be dead due to inner organ damage and bleeding eventhough you might not even have a visual scratch. And we haven’t even talked about what happens with your brain if you slow down from 50kmh to 0 in unter 1 Second :)

      @@elementald8762 1:43 it only got dropped one single time. So given the fact that 30m crane drop is nearly equivalent to a 87kmh crash, if someone crashes you from behind going 90kmh while you’re sitting back in a v90, you’re dead and that is inacceptable for a volvo.

    • @jaguarundi98
      @jaguarundi98 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@royalcorsa I see your point and understand it. Still, you can see the deformation is quite different when the cars are dropped head on. Nearly in every case, the passenger compartment stays intact when it is a frontal crash. Also, you take into account in your calculations that if a deformable surface like a car crashes into the V90 from behind, the kinetic energy will be distributed equally. However, if a larger vehicle like a semi-truck would crash from behind, since their frontal portion are much stiffer than the V90, they are much less likely to deform thus transmitting most of the impact energy to the rear of the V90. Let's say that the V90 absorbs three times the impact energy of the semi-truck, in that case the corresponding impact speed would be ~100km/h meaning that if a semi rear ends you at 100km/h, you are most probably dead. I find that conclusion not particularly safety inspiring for a Volvo.

    This does not offer any valuable information. They didn't place dummies in the cars and the airbags were turned off. They didn't place dummies because in most cars those crashes would be a fatality, just from the sheer forces. That their car is able to sustain that damage is one thing, but no one would survive those crashes, doesn't matter if it's and Audi, Tesla, or Volvo. This is the exact reason the NHTSA, IIHS and EuroNCAP doesn't do tests at hight speed, it does not provide any valuable information to the consumer because you would be talking fatalities no matter the car at that point.
