    Totally agree about bleeding and gutting dogfish. I enjoy the flavor and texture of the fillets.

    These guys look like they have some sturgeon-esque traits obviously sharks but not a traditional looking shark, if there is such a thing

    Great video. I caught three the other day (by accident) using halibut skin as bait. I did not know about his spine, which sliced my finger while I was trying to remove the hook. Sharp as a utility knife!

      Then you caught a spiny dogfish. They will mess you up

      Def not like salmon but try one, it might be to your liking! Make sure you bleed right away and gut it soon afterwards.

    What bait should I use for these guys

      Clams and bunker work just fine for them. As long as they're in the area they will bite both!!

      If they are in the water underneath you they will literally eat anything. Cheap chicken chunks work fine.

    Is it true that the reason they need special preparation right away is because they secrete urine through their skin? I heard that when I was a kid & we never ate the dogfish we accidentally caught while salmon fishing.

      Yes they naturally secrete urea through their skin which is why it's recommended you bleed right away and then gut them before icing down. Don't wait to that or you will end up with an ammonia smell and taste in the meat.

    I have watched several videos about bleeding and gutting dogfish. They all say to cut the head off and then split the belly open like regular fish gutting. You didn't show how you bled your fish in this video or how you gutted them without the usual slicing open belly. Can you tell me how please? Thanks!

      It's not necessary to cut off their head but def to bleed it. If you watch the video you see cutting the gills to bleed out before putting in a bucket with saltwater. Do that imediatly after catching one, just make a straight cut into gills and submerge in water. After a few minutes the dogfish will be bled out and expired. There is no special technique for gutting, just slice down the center from the anal vent to the pectoral fins and remove all the guts. This is a standard gutting technique for fish. In the video when I start cutting the larger dogfish you will see cut away the belly meat, you can use the same technique after bleeding the fish out for gutting, it's up to you if you want to save the belly after or not. After gutting you can fillet right away or just make sure the fish is kept on ice until you're ready to fillet it and use it. Hope that helps!

      Keep one next time, bleed it out and gut it right away, and give it a try! Def recommend the smooth dogfish over the spiny dogfish, I think it has better texture!

    Release?

    • @NEFishing
      @NEFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fillet was "released" from the body. I think that counts.😁

    The spiny dogfish have spines in front of the dorsal fins, not rear!

    • @NEFishing
      @NEFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correction! Spines in front of both dorsal fins not behind them! Thanks

    The British use dogfish to make fish and chips

    • @NEFishing
      @NEFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They used to use it, now I think they use other substitutes like pollack and they import cod from other areas.

    Great info but I hope anyone eating those doggies had a tetanus shot judging from your knife

    Hardly worth killing it for the amount of meat.
