    Purchased: August 2023 - still works GREAT!I th-cam.com/users/postUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

    Update - I would like to thank you again for this info. I'm happy to say I used one of these kits to recharge the my fourth unit. So this fix works!
    Now I'm going to recharge unit another unit that stopped heating. After owning 4 of these units bought between 2021 and 2022. I'm convinced that they're going to need yearly charging. I've had to recharge all units during the summer for Collings and now I'm going to do my 2nd unit for not heating. Hopefully that is the worst of these but I am not holding my breath.I have a 5th cabin that's going to get a mini split and it will NOT be a MrCool.
    Anyway, I appreciate the fix. Thanks.

    This could be a good kit. I am wondering if it will work in the long run. It seems like this kit would introduce a slug of air into the refrigerant cycle without purging the supply hose set up. Is there a purging technique? Also You have to find the leak before putting more refrigerant in. Tightening the fittings doesn't usually fix leaks. Often they are already over tightened and will leak faster with more torque. Just my experiences.

    • @GarageMahalLife
      @GarageMahalLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a Great kit! If you are familiar with purging, feel free. However with such a small amount of air, it is compensated with a drying element in the formula that produces the UV dye and sealant, so not a 100% necessary. I made it to be simple and nothing complicated. Although over tight or too loose can affect leaks, I'd rather have it a but tighter than looser. Thus the other reason for the sealant. It will fix leaks on almost any leaks, keeping I. Mind the system originally was working as it should in the beginning. Anyway thank you for watching and hope I answered any question you had. Thanks for the comment and be safe out there!

    I ordered the kit after seeing your TH-cam clip. It arrived quickly and the instructions are great.
    The reason I ordered it was because my Mr. Cool self-installed system abruptly stopped heating about a week ago.
    The outside unit (compressor) will now turn on when I set it to heat mode, whereas it didn't before. However, it’s still not putting out heat. The blower on the inside unit will turn on if I switch to Cool mode. But if I switch to Heat mode it stops blowing no matter what I set the fan at.
    The filters and outside unit are clean too. The only factor I can think of right now is the outside temperature. Since this problem started, it has been unseasonably cool where I am in California in January. It usually doesn't go below 40 and highs are normally around 50-60. However it's been close to 30 and highs below 50.
    Could it be a bad temperature sensor instead?

    • @GarageMahalLife

      Great description on what's going on. Recharge in cooling mode, despite the temp. Get it closer to the end of the right of the blue on the gauge. Remove charge hose and put back into heat mode. Put it to 86 degrees, leave for an hour. Check outside line to make sure 1 is at least 140 degrees, the other should be cold. Make sure the filters are clean and the find the inside temp gauge. Which is a small clear tube on the right side of the inside unit. Cup your hand over it and use a vacuum to suck all the dust out of that line.

    I just ordered a kit after seeing our video. I have 4 of these DIY mini splits and I've had to charge every one for bad cooling after one summer. Now, the newest of the bunch is not heating properly. I regret buying MrCool units but in reality, I needed 4 units and these I could afford. 4 of the better units would have put me over on costs. I powered off the unit and reset the breaker, waited 15 minutes and powered back on. The blower unit came on and started pumping good heat again. Make sure the fittings are all tight, sometimes the lines are not charged completely and need a "top off" but my kit is a great diagnostic tool too! Installed a 18k mini in January. The air conditioning work fine but found the heating is not smooth always hunting from on and off. Tried to contact Mr Cool three months ago but cannot get a return call from Tech.

    • @GarageMahalLife
      @GarageMahalLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The remote needs to be in sight of the unit with nothing in-between that line of sight. That can and will cause issues. Under the cover of the unit to the right there is a little clear tube of plastic. In there is the units one temp monitor. Get a can of air and blow that piece out. That should help stabilize as long as the refrigerant level is where it should be. These units start losing pressure after about 3 to 5 years.

    Hi Sir, I hope you can help. I just came across your video. Scenario: I purchased the 36k BTU this fall, but it has taken until today to finally make the final electrical connections and open the valves. I have been wiring my shop and just got power to it. I’m sitting here in the shop and it’s currently 33* inside with the wood stove going. The unit beeps and the louvers come down and the thermostat shows 86* on the indoor unit but that’s it. No heat no fan on heat. If I switch it to fan only it blows but just more cold air. Frozen fingers. Merry Christmas.

    Nice video. My unit was working fine and then started throwing a P4 error. Worked with MRCOOL tech and he said fittings might be loose causing a plunger not to work. I checked the fittings and they all seemed tight. I placed wrenches on them but they didn’t move. I had turned power off to the unit at the breaker. After going through the exercise, it started working fine. Tech said the reset with turning the power on and off might have reset something but also there may have been just enough movement in the wrench action to make a difference. That was a few months ago.
    Last week it stopped heating after a real cold snap where it ran for 20 hours a day. After watching this video, I may have a slow Freon leak. Does your new kit with the sealant fix a slight leak?

      I would check to make sure all the filters are clean, then the sensors (right hand side of head unit in clear tube.) And yes, sounds like a low refrigerant issue, to throw heat it needs to sense 140+ degrees out of the line... remember to use my kit in cooling mode, 62 degrees, all units... no matter the temp outside or in.

    • @GarageMahalLife
      @GarageMahalLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A lot of factors will affect the output temp. It should typically be within 1 to 2 degrees of your set temp. However if it is cold in a room, let's say 60 degrees and you set it to 80, the output temp maybe as high as 99 degrees until the unit senses the air coming into the unit gets closer to the programmed set temp. Then it should continue to blow out at the set temp. In this case close to 80 degrees...

    Just ordered a kit myself, I have the 24k unit and it had been working great even when it got down to the teens but suddenly its only acting like a fan regardless of what mode I put it in. The outside unit is making noise like it's trying to move the gas but the fan never kicks on. I did notice yesterday it had to defrost like 3 times but I didn't think much of it since we have been getting freezing rain due to the winterstorm rolling through. It's currently 35 out and the outside unit looks find (no ice or snow on it). I can't even get it to pump out cold air in cooling mode just blows air like its in fan mode. Im hopeful that it's just low so well see what this does. Cheaper to just try this than to call the HVAC guys out to even look at it. I'll go down the road later if needed lol.

    I am still watching this video even though it doesn't address my issue. But it seems that my issue is not common enough for there to be a video... So...
    What if:
    It seems as if the temperature setting is 10 degrees higher than the room temperature when cooling?
    :: If I want the room cooled to 76 degrees, I need to set the mini split temperature at 86 degrees? (Last summer)
    :: If I want the room cooled to 66 degrees, I need to set the mini split temperature at 76? (Last summer)
    :: Now, I set the cooling temp to 88 degrees, but woke up to the mini split still blowing cold air and my space at 54 degrees and lowering. (This summer)
    I am inclined to think the temperature sensor is bad, since I had similar results in the winter the couple of times I tried the heat, ie. a 10 degree difference between mini split setting and space temperature. But now its summer and the thing wont stop cooling even when set to its highest temperature.
    If you know an answer or have a suggestion (anyone) I would greatly appreciate your input.

      I would first clean the inside air unit, take the filter out and blow it out with a can of air or air compressor set on 35lbs or less. Outside unit, with lower water pressure clean the compressor area where the fins are... avoid too much pressure avoid bending the fins, aim straight on. Clean the inside filters really well. Now that the units are clean, see what the Temps differences are. Download the MrCool app and see when the units Temps registers at. Make sure your MrCool remote has new batteries and also is lightly blown out as well to get any dust out. Then if there is still a temp issue, then the sensor would have to be replaced, more than likely the inside unit's temp sensor.

    Brian, wondering if I need your kit. My unit (36k multi room) was working great but I was using it a LOT recently in the cold weather here in TN this past week. Last night it went into DF multiple times then stopped heating and threw a P6 error code. When I checked the air handler the coils were white with snow :) I defrosted them with a hair dryer to get rid of the ice. Since then I don’t get hot air, the fans start up fine and the heat pump and fan come on outside as well, just never get anything but cold air. I did get a P6 one more time but since then I get no error codes, it just never heats up. Think it’s just a recharge? I’ve had it running for 1.5 years with no issues until now.
    Also one more question, if this is the fix, do I need to fill it in more than one valve since I have two air handlers?
    Btw both air handlers had the white frost on them when this happened

    Hi. I've been running a MrCool 12000 BTU Advantage unit set up by a local HVAC company after I did the physical installation. Been running and working fine on Auto in TX for 2.5 years. Just this past week, I hadn't been in my mancave for 9 days, I went in and it was really warm at 10 pm. Ugh oh. And I have guitars in there. The 20 A 240 breaker was tripped. First time. Hmm.. Reset breaker. Watched it for a few minutes. No other trip. Checked that the inside unit was blowing cool air as is expected. It is. I let the place get to temperature overnight. And this morning I decided, I need to test the heat. So I put it on heat setting and on 80 degrees. Gave it a couple of minutes and nothing. No heat. I would think if it was a freon issue it wouldn't have gotten cool the way it did. Thoughts? I just read on a link that it might be the reversing valve in outdoor unit?

    • @GarageMahalLife
      @GarageMahalLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, the tripped break is something to note and keep an eye on. I've delt with a bunch of bad breakers these past few years, but only if it trips again, maybe check the load to the breaker and decided if it is too much amp draw, could be a compressor starting to go. However if it seems to cool okay, but not heat, definitely a low refrigerant issue. The unit needs over 140 degrees to kick into heat mode, if it doesn't reach that temp, it usually is a low refrigerant issue about 98% of the time. Mini splits seem to work OK cooling even with less than ideal refrigerant pressure. Heat however needs to have spot on readings. In summary, low refrigerant and keep and eye on the amp load of the breaker as it could be a compressor issue... once you charge it up to pressure that is.

      @@GarageMahalLife Thanks for the quick response B. I'm always puzzled by units that get low on Freon. I've had a Dodge Magnum that 17 years old and never needed a freon charge. And still works fine to cool. And my main house AC, the only time freon was ever low was when there was either a leak at a pipe at the outside unit or the evaporator developed small leaks in the attic. But that was a much older system. The pipe leak I had was just a crappy Goodman unit and a better service place fixed the leak and I didn't leak freon for many years after that.
      So I guess my point is, this unit is so new, seriously would the compressor be going out this soon? That would be sad. And if it has leaked refrigerant, that's weird too. But then again, I'm not a pro and I decided to hire the same company that set it up in 2018 to come out Wednesday and check it out.
      But I do appreciate the insight about why cool might work and heat not. Yeah the fact that I have a 20 amp breaker is actually 5 amp higher than a 12k btu is rated for. Should work fine with 15 amp. So blowing a 20 amp, that's quite a jump in current draw. I wonder if when it switches to heat and it's not able to do it's job, that's when the current is going up. Well I will let the pros give it a thorough going over. I have too many expensive guitars in there to risk a failure.

      @@cranstjs ReCharge should do the quick, just covering all bases with the breaker... why these units tend to "leak" is the fittings and fill points have small O rings made of silicone. The cycle going from hot to cold strains them and they get micro cracks. My kit has in the refrigerant a leak fix, so it will fill those micro cracks and prevent future and current leaks...

      @@GarageMahalLife Followup after HVAC guy visit. Told him the story. His impressions:
      1. He saw one of the safety box wires was a bit loose and tightened that. Not sure why that would trip a breaker or cause any other problem. And did a current test and it was less than 4 amps with AC on.
      2. Cool working fine. Filters fine. Didn't want to check refrigerant because he said breaking that connection would mean you would lose 6 oz right off. Then you could re-add but then you would have to recalibrate. Ok. That's all Greek to me. But he basically said as cool as it's getting it's unlikely you are low on that.
      3. Tested heat function. Not happening but he said, because the freon was probably really warm, it's possible that being too warm that it probably wouldn't come on. (99 deg out in TX). And really, why would you ever want the heat to come on when it's that hot? And it's offering protection from too much head pressure if the sensors say it's too hot to turn on heat. Again over my head.
      So I made sure the service ticket stayed open because so far in the 20 minute visit, all I got was tightening up a terminal that was a bit loose and looking over the rest. So next week it's supposed to drop into the 60s at morning so that's when I can test the heat. If it works then, we're good if not, the service ticket is still active for 30 days of guarantee for what I paid for.

      It does need to heat up outside in the unit and then heat the coils up inside. Then it will start to blow the hot air. Once it hits temp... it can take 5 to 10 minutes. As long as the pressure is good, filters are clean, it should start blowing hot warm air. Put the unit to 82 degrees to make sure it is at the a good temp. If you set it to 72 degrees and the room is actually 72 or higher, the unit will not kick on...

      Yes, put it in cooling mode. Even when the temp is low. If it is in heat mode, the compressor runs backwards and the charge line becomes the high pressure line and you will not be able to charge it. Anyway, leave in cooling mode to charge.
