      The biggest issue is if ttherewill be ww3, against conventional armies, using strike fighters will be almost impossible due to the air defenses of the countries taking part. We've seen some major failings of air force in the last 30 years or so because a good air defense with clever takes nullifies strikers. First you need to take out the air defense network. Even in Serbia the missile strikes on their air defense by NATO were highly ineffective. I think they destroyed like 3 pieces of equipment in 3 months with 700 missiles.gest issue is if their will be

    Can’t wait to see Justin Bronk fly back seat of a Gripen F for the first time and see his reaction to the *Next Generation* Gripen platform. Unfortunately they are still very restrictive when it comes to letting foreigners near the live cockpit and tech, and another detail is of course that it has yet to make its maiden flight. But both these things will change in due time. 🙂
    It would also be interesting to hear his view of the upcoming german “Elektronischen Kampf” version of the Typhoon, bringing the Arexis EW suite of the Gripen E/F to the ”Eurofighter”. Seems like a great match… 🙂

    • @dogsnads5634
      @dogsnads5634 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Gripen is a nice jet....but its small. And you can only do so much with a small jet....
      Gripen E just doesn't have the power, either engine thrust or electrical, to really threaten the larger 2 engine aircraft. It's radar after all is a much smaller version of Typhoon's in the PS-05 version on Gripen C, on Gripen E it has the ES-05. Which is the Leonardo Vixen 1000E radar, which is based on the CAPTOR,PS-05 architecture with AESA antenna. It's not going to come close to the Typhoon's ECRS Mk.0...let alone the mk.1 or the UK's Brightadder derived ECRS Mk.2. The power and technological differences between the radars is a huge gulf. To give you an idea the F-35's AN/APG-81 is around 60% larger than the ES-05....Typhoon's radar is larger still...the smaller radar space is also an issue with the Rafale, whose nose was shaped to provide better visibility on carrier landing approaches, but that means that the RBE.2 is a far, far smaller set than Typhoon's radar.
      Gripen's small size causes issues across the board in other areas. It's lack of conformal carriage means that if it carries larger stores, like Meteor, they have to hang from pylons with significant drag penalties. Once you start handing weapons from it its range, operating altitude and speed drop dramatically. It also limits its weapons load. Once again available thrust comes into play....Gripen E is said to be able to supercruise, just (m1.1, unlike Gripen C which can't), but only by carrying a minimal A2A load of a couple of IRIS-T. Typhoon can supercruise at m1.5-1.6 with a full A2A loadout of 4 Meteor and 4 Asraam....and an external centreline tank.
      Size matters I'm afraid...
      Don't get me wrong its a good little plane....but the 'little' comes with penalties.
      As for the Typhoon EK it will be a good capability...but its not going to be an EA-18G equivalent. It will be more capable than the F-16CJ for example, but the scaling back from the original 2 seater ECR version to single seat EK has reduced its capabilities significantly, which is a real pity...

Even back then they had a helmet mounted aiming system and they were able to take out USAF F15s without leaving station! Their station was either side of our formation both at the front and the rear. As a result we suffered no air to air kills against us and also no ground to air kills despite us deliberately flying over the Sam sites. I recall looking at the glossy brochures that the various manufacturers provided for the program competition in our basement. I favoured the F-14, which could explain why I joined the RCN a few years later. Forty plus years later, I was exploring ways the maintenance data for the A and B models could be incorporated into the Commercial Maintenance Systems at the Boeing Company when I was the Chief Architect for Commercial Maintenance Data at Boeing. After all the cancellations of the previous 40-50 years, unless they had an already in-development and well-funded replacement for Tornado in the 90s, they should have anticipated the need for Typhoon to have to do both.
      Also, the poor cockpit design seems to be a consistent theme with British aircraft sadly. I don't get why they don't study the erganomics of all the rest, and go with what works best.

    This is a bit of a confusing video. When comparing aircrafts, one should really identify the version of the aircrafts because there are huge differences between versions, and then discuss merits of various aircrafts in a given scenario because again there are many pros and cons for the different aircrafts that are critical in any given scenario. Note that being the "best" aircraft for a pilot when flying in a mission is not being the "best" aircraft in a more strategic sense (there are again critical factors such as availability, robustness, ergonomics, logistics required etc. that will affect greatly the actual usefulness of a plane in a war). That being said, if taking "the best" version available, the choice of the Typhoon for an air superiority mission is OK, when equipped with the AESA radar and a good mix of meteor and AMRAAM at high altitude, it is an excellent airplane, even though the stealth capacity of the F22 would still be a decisive advantage. For strike missions this is again a bit more complicated because it would really depend on the mission and type of hostile environment, but even in a shorter range mission, I would still put the Rafale ahead of the Gripen; The Gripen E is excellent, no doubt, but the Rafale is a twin engine plane, and in a two seater configuration, with the improved air to ground radar of the F4 version and ASSM hammer precision ammunitions, its ability to penetrate heavily protected enemy lanes and deliver safely precision loadout would be better than that of a Gripen. True, the current MICA is not as good as AMRAAM, but the Rafale can carry a much heavier load than the Gripen, meaning it can switch to an air defense role once its strike mission accomplished much more easily than a Gripen and carry meteor for that defense role if needed (and MICA NG are coming up very soon), and again the two seater configuration allows a much better 360° awareness in complex missions, even if the Gripen, as the Rafale, have excellent sensors all around. Again, F35A would probably come on top for a strike mission, this is what it was developed for, but it is less flexible than both Gripen and Rafale which are better multirole planes. F16 and F18, even in latest versions, will not be as good as Rafale and Gripen in their latest versions, they are much older design despite excellent upgrades, and as indicated, they are designed to be operated in US context with massive logistic support that only the US can provide. Rafale and Gripen are produced my medium nations than cannot afford such support, and thus are less demanding.

    A bit of comparing apples with pears and plums, isn't it? Comparing a legacy Hornet or a Block50/52 F-16 with Typhoon and Rafale? Also which Typhoon are you talking about? Tranche 1/2/3? And as Strikefrighter I'd very much consider the F-35. Since Justin has no experience with that, I'd claim to say that the title is a tad bit misleading. ;)

    Always good to have Justin on the channel. I’ve also had the opportunity of hearing him speak in person several times. My observation on this video though is that the extent to which the intuition of various HOTAS set-ups impacts an aircraft’s capability is perhaps over-sold. If you’re a passenger, even a very well-informed one, switching between jets then yes. But for the pilots who are trained and experienced on one type alone, unless there’s a fundamental flaw in the HMI surely the differences are nil to negligible in practice?

I´ll never get how they could adopt the F-22 without JHMCS. I mean, that bird was developed and then build up from the smallest screw to be THE perfect air superiority fighter. And then they scratch the JHMCS for the matter of cost reducing. To save like 500.000 dollars on a jet that has a flyaway price of 161 million dollars 🤦‍♂
