    Very impressive! Too pretty to use!I repaired my Grandfathers hammer ( I inherited all his tools years ago). It was a metalworking one with the wedge back. Rusted to crap. Split handle.I didn't want to make it perfect. I wanted to keep its character.I drove the old handle out and used Naval Jelly to take out the rust I didn't wire brush off by hand. Bought a handle at the local hardware store. Identical to the one that was in it.Glued the snot out of it with 2000# Epoxy. Oiled the head, stained the handle walnut and clearcoated it. I still use it now and then. Makes me feel like Granddad is looking over my shoulder.

      Thank you Sir. And thank you for sharing the story of your grandfather's hammer. Restoring an old tool which once was owned by a beloved one is always something important. I still have some of my granddad's tools myself. I didn't take the time to restore them yet but everytime I lool at them, I have this special feeling. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting.

    i've seen a few videos of people restoring old iron implements. i really like that you do it differently, and those handles you use to cut wood to keep your hands away from the blade.

    c'est super The Redsmith.....j'ai tellement de chose à faire....des envies de rendre de vieux trucs..."tout neuf"...qu'une décennie ne me suffirait pas....alors je me contente de "regarder les autres faire"....et c'est beau....bravo !

    I don't know why, but at first, I judged your skills, maybe due to the backyard setup and simple tools, but i couldn't stop watching. I regret my initial choice to judge, because that truly is a beautiful piece of workmanship you've created there

      n bo
      It does, but there's a logical reason I said this.
      It's because the wood started some separation when he wedged it and I don't think this handle will hold up at all. If it were a small hammer maybe but not something this size.
      In general though I don't think gluing pieces of wood together can ever be as strong as a solid piece if wood for this application.
      It looks nice , and I may be proven wrong but I expect this handle to fail.

    That's one beautiful hammer. I'm not normally a fan of laminated handles, but this one looks good. I also hope to see how it holds up under use.

      Stephen Thank you very much Stephen. Agreed. I usually prefer solid handles but I wanted to try something differebt this time. Time will tell if it holds. If not, I'll make another one 😉

    Man, that thing's beautiful. Nice job! I'd have been tempted to put a finish on the head to keep rust down (paint, bluing, etc.), but it's really striking (pardon the pun!) the way it is.

    • @RedSmithWorkshop
      @RedSmithWorkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Warnerad Thanks a lot. The pun was great😉 I put some oil on the head as well to keep it from rusting for now (I keep it indoor) but as soon as it goes back in the forge I will put two light coats of spray varnish on it. Thanks a lot for watching!

    That came out beautifully. I'm genuinely really glad you didn't reforge it now, it has such a great shape to it. I love the laminate handle too, although if you do use it regularly I'd be very interested to know how it holds up. Great work, as always.
