1-25-2023 Jackie Has A Tough Day…And A New Record!

- Two days ago, Jackie went into full egg protection mode when a group of ravens decided to pester her while she was on the nest. The ravens swooped around the nest and even landed on both the front porch and the back porch, trying to scare Jackie off of those eggs.
But Jackie was ready. She hunkered down over those eggs, squealing at the ravens to get away. When a raven got too close, she wing-slapped the nest, showing that raven that she means business and she will not allow it anywhere near the nest. And she set a new record for the number of wing-slaps in one event-16 times!!
She chortled a message out to Shadow to come fast. Shadow answered from a distance and soon flew into the nest, chasing ravens away. Both Jackie and Shadow shouted at those circling ravens for a long time. The ravens would not give up easily but finally left the area.
Shadow stayed at the nest with Jackie the whole time. He huddled close as Jackie protected the eggs. Finally, when all was clear, Jackie stood up and Shadow immediately took her place over those precious eggs.
When Jackie came back from her well-deserved break, she brought a huge, complex stick with her. She landed it on the nest and worked to turn it over to get just the right angle to grab hold and find it’s location…but that silly stick did a flip-over on its own and fell right off the edge of the nest.
Poor Jackie watched it fall and apparently felt so disappointed about losing that stick that she let out a few mournful squeals. As she then took over egg-sitting, Shadow chortled softly at her…perhaps with a little promise…
…And he soon came back with a giant catfish to make Jackie feel better. It even had the head still intact and he put it right on her back to make sure she knew the whole thing was hers.
After her nice lunch, Jackie was able to settle back in on the eggs, probably feeling much better.

Ravens are intelligent too but Jackie knew what they wanted! Her fierce slaps showed them she's not taking their bait! Shadows arrival calmed her down! We love you both. Stay safe!!❤️🦅🦅

Ravens are a dangerous challenge. They are opportunistic, aggressive and persistent. Experienced Jax didn't fall for distractions, and eventually it was Shad to the rescue !!!

How scary this was to watch!! The determination of that raven to draw Jackie off the nest!! This was a viscous fight for survival!! Jackie is so brave, smart, & loving! Her reaction to call for Shadow helped me calm down, too! But he flew away too soon. Jackie called him back & let him know she & the egg birds need better protection! She might also have said, "I want raven for dinner tonight!". Good momma, Jackie!! I love you, your sweet egg birds, and Shadow. God Bless!
It's amazing how bold the ravens can be but our dynamic duo knows how to handle them.
Judging from the shadows I saw leaving over the nest and the ravens that flew away when Shadow arrived, there were quite a few ravens. Luckily all ended well!

Wow, they were coming at her from both sides. The ravens are a lot peskier this year but our eagle parents are a lot more protective. Shadow the ultimate fish hunter! Good thing Jackie didn't want catfish and eggs. 💞💞

I love the way shadow sits next to Jackie to comfort her until she’s ready to leave the eggs, the ravens are real pests I’m surprised shadow doesn’t attack them
The ravens are beautiful creatures in their own right. Shadow would attack them if he could, however, the ravens are much quicker and more agile. Trying to attack them would have been futile. It would be a waste of energy to try to engage the ravens when the imminent danger to the eggs is over. Another fantastic video though, thanks FOBBV.

Poor Jackie she lost her stick. Apparently she didn’t care and then awesome. Shadow puts another catfish on top of her that was unusual. Jackie didn’t eat it right away she I think they are protecting the eggs more so because of the ravens, they really hurt them in the past with Their eggs so I understand why they feel that way. They are awesome to watch and it seems like Jackie you can hear her through the whole mountain. She is one vocal eagle. That’s the one thing I love about her she’s so unusual and shadow is so patient and I love shadow, they are awesome thanks for the great video. I usually watch them every day. I can’t wait until the eggs start hatching stay strong and stay safe both of you. Keep safe and warm. Love you two!

Getting the crows to harass Jackie, doing all that running around just to get her mad enough to leave and chase them herself and leave you to sit on the eggs.

I don't think the ravens are all that interested in the eggs right now. They're just playing a game, as all Corvids like to do with raptors. They like to mob them and harass them. But the eagles aren't amused!
Not happy with Mother Nature at the moment. Usually don't have ill will towards animals, but those ravens got me hot!

This is not a good thing to see happening. I am worried that if & when the eaglets hatch that this could be even more dangerous because Jackie or Shadow could accidently step on 1 of the eaglets & do some serious injury to them while trying to protect their nest. I don't remember these ravens being this annoying in the past while J & S were incubating their eggs. I remember the ravens destroying the eggs because J & S for some odd reason didn't incubate the eggs. Maybe I just didn't see a lot of videos with the ravens annoying them in the past. This must be very stressful for them. Hope all will turn out ok.
Does no one know that a group of ravens is an "unkindness of ravens?" Group? Not correct.
I am here to support this nest and the moderator, who keeps us informed, in a positive way. What is important is the welfare of the eagles and their eggs, not being critical of the semantics of the narrative.
