New subscriber, new to riding (at least since my Mongoose days of the late 70's), and newly in a large shirt size (from 3xl 3 years ago). Enjoy the channel!
I personally like quill stems because of the adjustability. my go to commuter bike has a quill stem, it is a Motobecane Cafe 8 with the internal 8 speed Nexus hub. I love how quiet this bike is. No sound pedaling or coasting..and you can go through all the gears at a stand still or standing up pedaling. This has about 38,000 miles on it and had it for 12 yrs. got it from bikes direct ..and had minor spoke adjustments from the box it shipped in.
Being a fan on KwvCentral for a long time and lucky enough to be one one the only people in the world who has Kevcentral stickers so to complete my collection the shirt would be a cool addition, you make such great videos, keep up the good work
I agree but it's probably due to him completely ignoring drop handlebar style bikes(road and gravel) which (at least in Europe) make up a big percentage of the prefered choices for most of enthusiast riders
I just built my medium version of this bike. There have been a few changes. The version in the review seems to feature the gates CDN belt. My bike has the gates sidetrack system which gates describes as “entry level; intended for seasonal, recreational cyclists looking for their first belt-driven bike.” It is not compatible with the center belts and you are not able to buy any parts for this system directly as it is currently only OEM. My medium frame bike also weighed in a bit heavier than the reviewed model, coming it at 26.95 lbs (also without the bottle holder attached). I am not sure how I feel about the sidetrack, it seems like it certainly would have more friction. I will put up a review when the weather gets nicer, but if anyone if currently considering this bicycle I thought it would be worth mentioning these differences,
Love the shirt. The Sladda appealed to me because it had the disc brakes in the front along with the gates drive. The heavy duty accessories were also a big plus along with the weight capacity. What did not appeal was the 2 speed hub combined with a rather high ratio chainring to cog ratio multiplied by the 700c wheel size along with a lack of frame sizes. I could not possibly tell you why a threadless headset is important to any bicycle that is not designed to drop 20 feet off the side of a mountain bike track. I have owned quie a few bikes with the old style head set and never had any problems with them.
Another great vid! I have the Nexus internal 3 speed on a commuter bike and agree 100% with you. Not everyone wants to speed $1000s on a high end commuter bike. Keep up the great work! Remember N+1. Shirt.
Thanks you for uploading this :-) maybe it will be my next bike 🚲 Edit: Shirt! 👕 I was planning to purchase the IKEA Slada, but when they stopped selling the Slada bike i had to fiend an alternative. I was waiting for a video about the Slada since the last Slada video, and now you uploaded this video with a Slada info and with an alternative bike :-) I can't wait to see the next video with the accessories!
This will never replace the Sladda. Why? It doesn't have that beautiful blue and yellow logo that constantly reminds me of the self assembly furniture that has tarnished the many afternoons of dads and college students. Edit: Shirt. I want that shirt.
Steve, just get an IKEA sticker and plaster it on. If this bike does come assembled it cheats you on the record number of mother F's and other expletives you utter when building their furniture.
Thank you Kev for your detailed description on the Gotham, it helped me a lot to make my decision to purchase this bike! I cannot wait to wear my SHIRT while enjoying my Gotham!
Would you consider a video of the advantages/disadvantages of various bike features? Like disk/V type brakes, shifter types, 26"-700MM-29" wheels, ect.
KevCentral it's as smooth as butter . I didn't ride it much because the front wheel is slightly out of true. Per their customer service, it's at the lbs getting trued up. Supposed to get it back tomorrow. I opted for Hudson blue and it's beautiful. Thanks for the L-train review. Bet I watched it 20 times
I would love one of these!! The newest ones don't have rear rim brakes though. It has rear coaster brakes, which I am not a big fan of. I'd prefer dual rim brakes, nut at least it has front rim brakes. Living in Hawaii, rust is a big problem. This Nike, and their cruiser model, are built from the ground up to be rust free as possible. Stainless steel spokes, belt drive, etc. With $150 shipping to Hawaii and a $550 list price, and me being a retired old cancer survivor, I'm afraid it's out of range. I have a bad knee too, but I ride my cheapo seven year old Thruster Fixie(as a single speed, not a fixie!) every day. It's a single speed flat bar road bike. Easy to maintain, and it just works. A second bike with some gears is in the air, but I will keep my simple steel framed road bike for a long time to come. Priority has some great looking stuff, and I like them all.
This looks like a really nice option for a commuter bike and I am curious about the belt drive since I have never been on one. I also like the looks of the bike. But the KevCentral SHIRT really caught my eye! You seriously do a lot of great reviews and I always look forward to your next.
If I lived in town would be a great looking tooling around bike in a kevcentral shirt. But since i live 7 miles from town, and its 16 miles to the closest wal-mart and 20 miles to work, bike commuting is not really practical for me. Thanks for the great reviews like always, and objective, straight forward and truthful...
I just found KEVCENTRAL a week ago on TH-cam and already saw all the videos. Great videos, I was waiting for a new one. I saw the Sladda video and today this one. The sladda has a cool design though. I feel that they look different and the only thing that’s the same is the belt drive. The Gotham looks amazing too; however, in my opinion I can’t put them in the same category. Great Video and it would be cool to get a SHIRT P. S then again the sladda got recalled so I guess the Gotham
Found your channel just this month. Enjoyed your reviews of the Walmart bikes and looking forward to your opinion on the GT Aggressor Pro! Oh yeah, shirt ! Looks very cool. Keep up the great content!
I'm not in the market for a commuter bike, not something I can use with my job but that is a cool looking bike. Looks comfortable too. I'm interested in belt driven bikes. They seem smooth. Nice they sent to it so you didn't lose your shirt buying one...
It's a decent looking Shirt...I mean bike for the money. Never had a belt drive bike before or a geared hub so I am interested in getting something like it one day. Can never have enough bikes lol.
I had a Giant Seek that came with a Shimano Alfine eight speed hub, it was a joy to ride and ride it I did everywhere. There is a plastic roller bearing cage inside that hub that broke and rendered the bike unusable, that broke my heart, what made me angry was a complete lack of parts support for that hub. I swapped it out for a three speed because they were way cheaper than an eight and then the bike was stolen. The eight was great, the three was usable but limited.
Hello I love these videos. There not just reviews but they are letting people know what your own thoughts and experiences with the bikes you have. Keep it up, SHIRT
I already have a belt drive bike with disc brakes - the Continuum Onyx, but thanks for sharing the info. It looks like this is a Europe specific company.
Most manufacturers use way too big of a gear ratio with three speeds, so the gears are too high, maybe around 100 gear inches for third and 50+ for first. There's nothing listed on the gearing for this bike on their site, but from the look of that big cog I'm guessing Priority didn't fall into the same trap which is why it's usable. I picked up a similar bike a few years ago with this problem, changed the gearing, and it was so good that I ended up selling my touring bike because I'd always end up on the three speed.
kingedwin poop Seconding this. I have the exact hub as the video sg3r40 on a ciry bike The stock rear cog was too small, but now I can tackle any hill and almost never spin out.
I think that you are likely the best reviewer on TH-cam. You appear honest, practical and down to earth. What more could we want. I have enjoyed the Gotham more than any bike in many years, and realized the secret is it is simply so likeable, I smile alot when on this bike. I am planning on a metric century in August 2023 in Wichita Falls Texas. My mods have been Michelin tires, latex tubes, an Epoch saddle, Sylvan pedals and nothing else. Isn't this thing a great value? I may buy a second one for the Texas Century. Thanks.
Very nice videos!! I will buy a new bicycle soon to cmmute during my one year stay in US. I will definitely recommend your channel to my friends. Greetings from Brazil Kevcental !! By the way, thank for answering my question the other day.
Did you see the new tech at Eurobike expo? We're going past belt drives straight on to cogs only. Would be pretty cool to see you show off one of those, but it's probably going to be very expensive for the first few models out.
I just looked at some of the shaft drive systems at the expo. We’ll see what comes of it all. For now I’m sold on the gates belt drive - I can ride it today 👍🏼
I ride a great single speed all over the place but have been perusing the web for something to a little better handle snowy days and hills and rougher patches of NYC streets. I'm torn between an internal gear hub bike like this and a cyclocross/gravel bike. Are internal hubs much less efficient to one's peddling?
When I recently got my Classic Plus, a coaster brake was an option. My front wheel brake is only used in emergencies( at least is will be if I ever have one.)
Any chance you could send one of those large shirts to Ireland? Love your channel unfortunately most of the bike you cover aren't available in Ireland!
The IKEA Sladda was my perfect pick for Wife-Bike. She needs a step through and I love belt drive, so it was perfect. Well now I'm not going to find one, so Where do I look for a small step-through ladies bike with belt drivetrain? The frame doesn't have to be T-shirt White but it's a plus. :)
Quill stems are pretty good so long as you don't ride them too rough and you know how to set them up properly. For a commuter bike, a quill is all you need.
I'm struggling to decide between the gotham or regular classic plus. I want a more upright comfort bike for commuting/grocery shopping, but I've also never used the sweeper style handle bars. I guess worst case scenario I purchase the classic plus, decide I don't like the handle bars and replace them with the commuter style ones they have on their website.
nice shirt! lol Like the bike too..I have a motobecane Cafe 8 with over 14000 miles it that is very similar. I like the versatility of it as an urban curb jumper..and like the quietness of the internal gears. i never tried a belt drive.
My bike got stolen and I am thinking about this bike or the Turi. The Turi has a greater gear range and more features. But also seems like a more likely theft target. I ride casually, but will sometimes ride up to 25 miles. I had a 21 speed, but barely used most of them. Would this bike be good enough?
Not in market for a sladda, have trek ds4 with 2 wheelsets cx setup and street ,but the Gotham is a good look 👀 for alternative bike I am looking for as backup bike.good review Shirt.😉
As a short commuter bike to work this wouldn't be ideal for the hills in my area (my SHIRT would be soaked in sweat ) but it is perfect for someone like me who would ride it more around the village on flat streets or in a busy city like environment where 21 speeds really isn't needed.
I still want a Sladda but for a couple specific reasons. I'm hoping to snag one for cheap/free because of the recall, I'd like a frame that's designed around pulling a trailer or carrying heavy loads and both of those feed into my last reason is that I'm interested in electric bike conversions since I live in a spread out area. It'd be really cool to modify the trailer to raise the rail heights and slap a giant battery pack on it with a metal topper. All the carrying ability with a lot more ease of use for really long distances. EDIT: Also if you think it might be interesting, I'd love to see a video on any bikes that you think would make good candidates for an ebike conversion.
Yep. It is slick and stealth. Still a flat land bike, at least for grand dads who want a granny gear. Great reviews, all! Really liking the L-train. It's the 'shirt'!
I enjoy learning about all these bike man. Thx for the content! I have my days when I need a nice low gear. I'm older and hills seem steeper every year. I don't ride over 25 mph so high gears are irrelevant to me and this 3 speed although beautiful isn't for me.
I've had my Gotham since just after you released this video. It just collects dust. It's not nearly as much of an upright ride as I was hoping (prefer the Classic Plus handlebars). If anyone is in the Phoenix area and wants a Large (33"-36" inseam) diamond frame version of the Gotham, let me know.
I bet the Priority 600 would beat the sHiRt out of the IKEA and other Priority bikes. Looking forward to you doing a review on the 600 one of these days.
@@KevCentral I know that. You just said in your video that you would compare them. I understand it's not available anymore so there may be no more point. But it would be interesting
Too be honest I have never owned or ridden a belt drive bike but by what I know they seem very cool and when you reviewed the slada that was the first belt drive I have ever seen so I took a look at belt drive bikes and some are really interesting with the hubs gears and the things they come with is pretty cool #shirt
You should really try some of the Canyon commuter bikes. I'm interested if their commuter/urban bikes are as good as the road and mtbs I own from them.
Hey guys. I'm looking to get the trek marlin 5 for commuting around campus and do some trails. Can you review the 2018 model or give some other recommendations.
The SRAM automatix hub was discontinued in 2017 due to low orders. This automatic two geared rear hub is used in the IKEA Sladda. This is probably the reason the Sladda is discontinued since there are no other automatic internally geared hubs. Sturmey Archer has a kickback two geared but is not a practical as the SRAM automatix
The recall and cancellation was due to the Continental belt drive system being defective. Though I don’t doubt the automatix going away factored into the decision to pull the plug vs fix the issue.
Glad to hear your dad is up and moving.
Glad to SHIRT your SHIRT is up and SHIRTing.

true. but he has featured more expensive ones.
And besides there are plenty of road bikes in the 200-500 range aswell
I get ya.. it because alot of people are lazy bums...they can't ride a bike to save their lives 🙈

what kind of Shimano nexus8 speed wheel set would fit this bike it I wanted to upgrade the gearing?
Ignoring its measely 2-gear transmission, the Sladda was, in my impression, designed more as an elegant cargo-type bike than as a commuter bike.
Hi! I've found a belt drive bike with disk brakes, the Bombtrack Outlaw 2, looks cool from the pictures on the Bombtrack website

Stem type doesn’t really matter on a commuter or comfort.

I have my days when I need a nice low gear. I'm older and hills seem steeper every year. I don't ride over 25 mph so high gears are irrelevant to me and this 3 speed although beautiful isn't for me.
Oh shiRt, i am late for work! 😂 good video kev, love it!
I'm confused about the quill stem, its ok because it can change the height of the handlebars. A Threaded headset and stem can do that too.
Does the shirt match the white version?
I bet the Priority 600 would beat the sHiRt out of the IKEA and other Priority bikes. Looking forward to you doing a review on the 600 one of these days.
BTW, keep up the good work. Loving your reviews and perspectives.
Does anyone make kits to upgrade a regular geared bike to a belt drive & internal hub?
Quill stems are fine for road use. My old mountain bikes if you rode hard the headset would come loose all the time.
Did we ever get a this vs sladda video?
No. The Sladda was recalled
When will you make the hyper carbon x upgrade 2 video?
Internal gears nice...3 speed belt drive. That must feel nice?!
