  • OMG. I'm like so nervous!
Today, not only are you going to learn a very important lesson: what to do when you have TWO OBJECT PRONOUNS in the same sentence.
    But you're going to witness...
    My worldwide...
    Singing debut!
But seriously, this is a very important lesson.
And once you're done with this. I promise, no more pronouns for at least a month.

This has been one of the most helpful lessons to me, as I navigate the early stages of my university Spanish courses. For the most part my textbook has been very useful in laying out ground rules for grammatical structures, and my teacher very competent and knowledgeable, but the section on double object pronouns is basically a tongue twister for my brain, leaving me stumped for over an hour.
Having a decent understanding of individual R.I.D. pronoun forms, I can say happily that this tutorial had beautifully smooth transitions between concepts and was worded perfectly so as to be clear and concise without being confusing at all (in my opinion).
I frequently find myself referring to your videos for clarification when other methods fail.
I just wanted to show my appreciation and commend you on the fabulous videos. They are REALLY helpful! =)

Spanish Dude! You rock man, I've been dipping in and out of this video a lot as I progress through my spanish learning, but it's definitely finally sinking in. I came across an example of when I needed to apply the RID rule but with the verb gustar. The sentence I needed to translate was, "I would like to stay home today". Yes, you could use quisiera to remove the problem, but it's a bit over-formal given that you wouldn't be saying this to none other than a friend or family member, so you would use "Me gustaria" for "I would like". Because you have now used the pronoun 'me' for gustar, it means that you are forced to attach the reflexive pronoun on to 'quedar', whereas if you used quisiera, you would have a choice in saying "Me quisiera quedar". I just thought that was a rather unique example where your 'gringo brain' has helped you here, but I actually prefer to add the reflexive pronouns before the conjugated verb, as I find it easier to recognise in a sentence.

Es algo muy normal en los niños cuando está aprendiendo a hablar que cambien el orden los pronombres y digan "me se olvidó" o "me se rompió". En estas ocasiones, utilizamos un memotécnico muy estendido (muy popular). Les decimos: recuerda, la SEmana es antes que el MEs.
Puede que te resulte curioso, o incluso práctico.

    Hello Jordan!
First off I need to get the absolutely mandatory: "Your videos are awesome beyond words for more reasons than I can count". But to cite a few, every video really is very entertaining to watch and the effort you take to be as clear and precise as possible is highly appreciated.
Anyways, I just wanted to comment this time and say that I especially appreciate how honest and relatable you are in your videos. It makes everything very reassuring. I was doing unexpectedly well with memorizing things up until now using the ridiculously, simple flash card strategy but I feel like I am being slowed down a bit here... not because of the way you teach, but simply because the pronoun videos on their own are perfectly understandable... but then once the other versions start piling up I find myself pausing to remember which is which.
I wasn't looking forward to moving on to this final video but your reassuring words definitely made me feel more at ease and eager to keep trying until it works automatically(I found that hard to comprehend until you actually mentioned it and testified to it's legitimacy).
So thank you once again! You've restored my dwindling confidence just now and I will definitely try to practice these until my brain bleeds.

    • @elspanishdude
      @elspanishdude  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

White Wolf Wow, what a message. Thanks so much for taking the time to write it. I loved reading it. Really, I appreciate what you said and what you notice very much. The videos are not easy to make. But when I read notes like yours, it really makes me resolute to continue no matter what. It really fires me up. Thank you so much.Yes, just focus focus focus and practice and practice practice. You get it. I can tell. Your compliment was perfect. You felt reassured that the frustration you felt was normal. But in a way that you're ready to do what's needed to make the pain go away. And you said it perfectly too "practice these until my brain bleeds".Like I said, you get it. It's obvious. Now make your brain bleed. And the pain WILL GO AWAY. As weird as that might sound.

There is one error. Jordan says that Reflexive + Indirect is rare, but it is fairly common.
Example: Se le cayó = It fell (off himself) [Meaning that he dropped it involuntarily]
In this case "se" (reflexive) refers to the fact that the object fell off himself/his own body and "le" (indirect) refers to the fact that he is the person that the object belongs to.

Jordan as a new learner to spanish, I noticed right away the issue I was having but had no idea how to address it. As I am watching your lesson now I see in the reflexiverbs review the translation "He buys a gift for himself" = se compra un regalo .. My mind couldn't wrap itself around "un regalo" I thought why is it this and not "un regala" since he is the subject and the participant of the action which is a male, but now it is understood he is doing it for himself and the only subject pronoun 1st person singular is Yo which literally means oneself(I)
    Woahh my mind is cleared

    Hola, Jordan.
Just to let you know, I believe that #8 on the answer key to this lesson is incorrect.
    Q. They want to give them to me. (feminine)
    . A. (Ellos/ellas) quieren dartelas. | (Ellos/ellas) te las quieren dar.
But thank you for these helpful lessons. this one is by far the hardest, and will take some time to master; but you have really blessed me by taking the time to teach this. It is very important, and nobody really teaches it.

This is the only hard thing in Spanish for me to understand. And finally I found a video addressing it.

I like your video. Helps me a lot. Can we say: le y me lo da (she gives it to him and me)

Me gusta como explicas el español. Hay un vídeo que creo que te gustará, se llama "Qué difícil es hablar el español".

A good example to use for beginners in Spanish of something "sounding wrong" is where "no" should be. After just a month or so, I found that "lo no quiero" just didn't sound right because I had heard "no lo" hundreds of times. Eventually "la la" will stop sounding right and you'll know you're doing something wrong.

You should make a video on past tense conjugations, you are the best! Make a video for that so other gringos can pass spanish II :) lol

StigamaGizmuh I'm on it, I promise. It takes me a while to make the videos, but in the Spring I'll be focusing on past tense verbs some. I want to make everything right now, but I just can't =(

I think there is a mistake in the answer key for double object pronouns. Number 8 it uses 'te' instead of 'me'.

Agreed. The answer for no. 8 should be "(Ellos/ellas) ME las quieren dar."

Hey man, another great video. I'm marathoning these. Quick question, you phrased "I want to give it to you" as "Quiero dartelo" but could you also say, "Quiero darselo?" The reason I'm asking is because if you had a sentence like I want to give it to him you would get a sentence that says, "Quiero darlolo" which breaks the la la rule.

+B-Rational "Dartelo" is informal. "Darselo" is formal (to usted) or it could mean "Give it to her/him"

So, don't you need an accent mark when you do attach both the indirect and direct objects to the infinitive?

Thanks for your wonderful videos as always but please tell me how would I know if the 'se' is you, him or it. The first sentence below suggests the 'se' is plural (them) while in the second it is singular 'her'. Also could the three remaining sentences be translated differently from those provided below i.e. switching him/her for them. Thank you.
Se lo da. He’s giving it to them.
Se lo muestro. I’m showing it to her.
    Quiero comprárselos.
I want to buy them for them.
    ¡Cómpraselos!
    Buy them for him!
    Quiere comprárselos.
She wants to buy them for him.

thank you sir for your quick answer ,,
i went to the questions of this lesson and their answers
    and
    i have a note and a question if you don't mind ,,
el ) se lo da ,,, it's equal to ( he gives it to them ) ,,
here ,, is this sentence can mean ( he gives it to himself ) and the verb will be considered as reflexive verb ??
i mean is that possible to consider this verb in this sentence precisely as a reflexive verb ??
    this is the question ..............
    the note is ,,
in the sheet of the questions that you put in this lesson ,,, in number 8
    8. They want to give them to me. (feminine)
the answer that you also put in the sheet of answers is :
    8. (Ellos/ellas) quieren dartelas. | (Ellos/ellas) te las quieren dar.
maybe the right answer ( in my opinion ) has to be :
ellos/ ellas quieren darmelas ,,,, or ,,,, ellos/ ellas me las quieren dar
you are the teacher sir , so forgive me if i say my opinion here that maybe it's wrong but i think it's better to ask and say what i think for the biggest benefit
