In the alleyways of downtown Los Angeles, Skid Row, and other surrounding areas, homelessness is at an all time high. The wonderful mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, is a proud sponsor of Clean Streets, a program that ensures that alleyways and streets such as these are cleaned with the help from LABOS. Crews like this one are sent out on the regular to manually shovel piles of food wrappers, clothing and garments, boxes, illegal dumpings from businesses, and the occasional surprise of human feces to help protect public health and safety. Having not been in such an environment before, I was shocked to see what pollution has accumulated in some parts of my city. I will probably never forget some of the sights I saw that day, being that the alleyway looked like images I have seen in documentaries of third-world countries. And you bet I was sure to take multiple showers when I got home.
This crew was especially fun and chill, and worked efficiently with their brand new truck (36411, no more than a week old at the time, also, one of the first full size rear loaders for LA) to clear a path down a once polluted and trashed alleyway in Downtown. This was one of two crews out that day, so as you can imagine a lot of trash was cleaned up. You may notice they did not take a pile here or there, and that was because there was bio-hazards visible, which they are not allowed to touch. Huge thanks and shoutout to them for letting me and others follow along and film!
