Over time I have purchased all of the Tiny Series lenses (18 f/2.8 + all of the f/1.8's: 24, 35, 45, & 75) for my A7III and aA6000 bodies and have absolutely ZERO regrets. I've also managed to get each of them on sale, saving a couple of bucks & best of all my back pain has reduced significantly. This series has provided great value to me and your videos have helped in my decision making process along the way and for that I thank you!
Wow, really impressed with the silent AF with minute focus breathing. Samyang seems to really improve with every lens release. Thanks for all the work you put in Dustin!
Thanks for the review, it helped me decide to get one of these. Very timely release from Samyang as I needed something of this length to fill a gap in my collection, It's very well priced here in New Zealand too, where we often pay a premium compared to larger markets. I picked mine up earlier this week. Using it on APS-C, only a few test shots to date but I'm very happy with it so far.
Nice review. Just bought a Sony A7c with a Tamron 28-200 (2.8 - 5.6) but I find that in low light interview situations 2.8 isn't open enough for me. I don't like using exra lights to keep the moody shots so I look for one light sensitive lens that I can also use for interviews. Do you think this would be the one or would it distort the person too much?
It is a big difference. The GM lens is the better lens; the question is whether it is nearly a thousand dollar better lens if you're on a tight budget. According to the MTFs, the GM is very slightly sharper in the center but a bit weaker that the Samyang in the corners. The GM has the better build and nicer bokeh...and a larger maximum aperture.
I'm really tempted to swap my Tamron 24mm f2.8 for the samyang 24mm f1.8 do you think it stands up to Tamron in terms of sharpness and focus accuracy, another fantastic review 📷👍🙏
Hello! I was wondering what you would recommend between this lens and the sony 20mm 1.8. I would assume that the 20mm is the better buy, but from the few review I managed to find on this lens, it seems quite good for the price. Great videos btw.
HI Dustin, this is fantastic review! You mentioned in your blog that Samyang doesn't get full support of in-camera correction - are you referring to barrel distortion correction? Could you elaborate on that? I have a A7C and I am a jpg shooter. Would A7C automatically correct the barrel distortion? Thank you very much
Thanks for the review Dustin, it was very good and constructive like all the others you make. Im struggling to decide to choose between this and the Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G and Sony 35mm F1.8, and also the new Sony FE 40mm and the 40mm Batis which review I liked a lot. Any suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks again and keep ti up :)
hi Vajna - that's a lot of different focal lengths and price points! This Samyang is a very good value choice, and, if you want to put together a nice kit of small, light lenses, consider the Samyang 24mm, 40mm, and 75mm F1.8 lenses. I've been very impressed with all of them.
thanks for the review, interesting lens, I need a good 24mm, did you find that the field of view is an actual 24mm? Because I read in another review of the samyang 24mm 2.8 that the field of view was actually a little tighter than 24mm.....
How does this compare to the Batis 25 f2.0? I was going to pull the trigger on the Zeiss until I heard about this, as I have been pretty pleased with other Samyang lenses. I can get the Batis Used for around $700 Should I save myself $200 and get this instead? edit: Corrected the Batis Focal Length
Hi, I would like to ask you is this good focal length for capturing waterfalls? I do have 35mm and I will be going on my trip to waterfalls and thinking to get lower than 24mm. but I am confused to spend extra money on 24 or 35mm would work :/
That question really depends on how close you are to the waterfall. 24mm does capture a wider angle of view, but that’s only relevant if you can’t back up further away from the waterfall. I do love this Samyang lens, though
Hey Dustin. I got the Sony 20mm f1.8, 35mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 on my Sony a7c. Wondering would your recommend this focal length? Thinking of getting this or the Sony 24mm f2.8 or even f1.4 but price varies hugely.
Nice review as always! I want this lens, but I got the Tamron 17-28, so I can't really justify it, haha. I am concidering selling it and go all primes, as I already have Samyang 45 1.8 and was pleasantly surprised with that one. In combination with crop mode on my A7C it would look something like this: 18mm 2.8 (27mm), 45mm 1.8 (~67mm), 75mm 1.8 (~112mm). And then maybe this 24mm, just because it seems so good! "Small but mighty" :-) Thanks!
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you very much for your reply Mr Abbott ! No worries.. hope you can check em in the future, for wide angle lenses on sony mount actually the very best are still considered the Zeiss batis 25mm (which is pretty old ..) and obviously the 24mm Sony GM. Now the Samyang seems the new contender in this field: there are lots of comparisons between the Batis vs GM or GM vs Samyang, but no one actually compared together all these to determine in 2022 which is better. I look forward hoping to see you point of view :) Greetings from Italy !
- Hey Dustin, late question . . . *Why would Samyang pick the 24mm lens to build an Astro lens, rather than the 18mm lens* ?? I don't get it. 24mm is making things more tight than they should be for Astro, especially since the nicer shots of the night sky also include a bit of the earth. Is it a Sony sort of move, in order to sell us the 18mm version later? Or did they pick 24mm, because that was the only way to keep the rendering as pristine as they did?
Not in all ways, no. The GM has better build and overall features, and I'd still call the AF slightly more stable. It has nicer bokeh, too. But the margin isn't huge, and for many people, this lens will do most of the what the GM will do for much less.
Thank you for another awesome review! I love these 'tiny' lenses. They're so easy to take with me everywhere. I like the 50 F1.8 w/ the 2nd firmware update quite a bit.
Not as sharp as this Samyang, but that doesn't mean it isn't as sharp as the 24GM. For some reason my GM results were shot in APS-C (a mistake at the time), so I couldn't use them for this comparison.
@@DustinAbbottTWI would love to see the MTF chart for this lens vs the 20mm f1.8 G. The 20mm is seriously one of my sharpest lenses I cant imagine a lens that's even sharper than this. Maybe I just got lucky and got a really good copy.
Just bought one. Quality control seems not to be the best. The first copy showed inconsistent corner sharpness, with left corners noticeably softer than right corners. Second copy was a lot better. Never experienced that level of inconsistency before.
Great review!! Beginner question for you.. does a faster auto focus lens help the over autofocus speed? I would assume they work together. Then I saw your review of the 1.8/45 Samyang and decided that'll be my new standard lens. To complete the set, I was looking for a comfortable, yet sharp wide-angle. This is it. Thanks Abbott. Performance wise, I really want to see 24GM test chart comparison with this lens not 20G or 35GM. Actually this lens priced inline with Sigma 24mm F3.5, Sony 24mm F2.8 G but with over one stop advantage in wide open aperture. I am sure it performs better at f2.8 in vignette and corner sharpness. Canon is slow in wide end primes, if Samyang ports this lens to RF mount without the Astro button function at the same $500 price point, they will sell a tonne. immediately.
