We need a front door and I found an old stove not far from where the door was. The stove may not work out but the door is perfect! I can't wait to start working on it!

Very interesting video, brings back memories of when I was 15, summer of1955. I was standing on the side-board of a small custom combine filling and sewing burlap grain sacks, oats, Did this for small farms around the small Comunity of Winlock WA. We were invited in for dinner, ! PM was dinner time, supper was after 5 PM. The Lady of the house, to my surprise was still usinf a large wood stove with a side hot water tank for all her kitchen chores. Wonderful, (large), home cooked meal on a wood stove.🤠🥩

Some young people want to possess old material objects, but have very little use for old people. You talked to an "old man" which "made his day". You will be an old man soon enough and some arrogant younger guy will come along and think he is doing you a great favour in talking to you. In fact it is a privilege to meet and talk with an elder - and something to be more grateful for than any object.

If the firebox has firebrick then you can burn coal,, The tank on the side behind the Exhaust is a water tank to heat water

Neat old stove. I hope you can restore it. You can bake biscuits or cornbread whatever in that oven. And cook other food on top. I love the taste of food cooked on old wood stove. I have one porcelain clad water reservoir warming oven. Not use it anymore . My daughter has it now just setting on the porch. But I like the stove you already have in your house. I never saw one like it. Taking top off and filling like that. Kool

W had a wood cook stove similar top in the 40's on the ranch , ours had a food warmer attachment mounted about 5 ft high on the back. later mother had an additional electric stove in the kitchen. she preferred the wood stove to bake, and just used the electric stove in the summers. when the old 1900 log house didn't need any heat.

  • @thomasarussellsr

I think the wood goes in the end opposite the chimney. The end next to the chimney exit may be a water tank. The wood may also go under the "burners". One way to find out, blow some compressed air into the chimney, and see where most of it comes out with all the plates in place. The large box in the middle is most likely the bread box oven. Best home-made biscuits ever, coal or wood. Great for bread and cakes too. Just have to allow yourself time to learn how to use it with out burning the food. It is way different than a gas or electric range. It would be a great cook stove in the colder weather as it doubles as your heat source, but would make the house uncomfortable during the warmer months. I see in a lot of the comments below suggestions to paint it. I would not use paint if you're going to use it for cooking. Wire wheel it real good and get it hot and season it with beef fat like you would season a cast iron skillet. When it starts looking dry, melt some fat and rub it down again. Animal fat will season cast iron better than any vegetable oil, and if done right, will make the surfaces virtually non-stick (for splash-overs and spills). Grandma seasoned her old Ben Franklin coal cook stove twice per year and that was all she cooked on/in until I was in my early teens, about the same time they got indoor plumbing they updated the kitchen to a gas range. She hated it, but got used to it eventually.
They kept the coal stove for years as their primary heat (grandpa was a coal miner), and she still used it for her baking until I was in my 30's. (I'm 47 now). I would suggest cleaning out the water tank and using it in the winter as wood and coal heat is pretty dry, and added humidity helps for a comfortable house. Short of using the water tank (if that's what that end is) put an old cast iron tea pot on top or a pot of water.
Absolutely beautiful stove, just needs cleaning and seasoning.
Of course if it is to be an art piece, go ahead and paint it if you so choose, it would still be beautiful. White speckled Navy Blue ceramic would look awesome on it for an art piece, but that would be an expensive finish. Maybe even contrasting base and doors?
I am a bit confused by the peep hole on a door right next to the glass. Yeah, the glass isn't see-through, but you can see enough to know someone is there, and they can see you at the door. Good luck matching a dead-bolt to that beautiful door handle, I sure hope you can.

That is a wood burning cookstove with a hot water tank on it and oven in the middle. You can regulate how much heat goes to some pans by removing an assorted number of the rings in each place. Grew up with one almost like it

The door to the right of the oven is the firebox. the subsequent lids above this are the hottest place on the stove and it gets cooler as you travel across the top. There should be a damper to control the heat and channel it both underneath and above the oven. It is very common to have to turn items you are baking in order to get them to cook evenly due to the fact that one side of your oven is hotter than the other. You have to really be a master of fire and temperature control in order to cook on one. It truly is an art form. The box to the left side is the water tank to provide hot water for things like dishes and baths. Looks as if the water tank has been removed from that side and an empty box was left behind.

Coal wants air from the bottom. Some stoves load the wood from the top of the box, and it would make sense that the wood goes in on the opposite side to the flue, so heat can go around the oven and under the cooking surfaces.

That stove is missing the upper that sits astraddle the oval flue. The round caps near the flue hole was for pipes for a heat exchanger, the bottom tank in the back was heated by the stove and the warmer/hot water would rise up one side through to a coil and tank built into the top. on one or another side you would plumb a tap or faucet to get ready water for cooking, washing, baths etc. Also on the right side when facing the stove front there would have been a cast iron box/attachment for a warming area... It was an option I believe. A family friend in Montana had a 100 year old cabin that we stayed in back in the 60's (before B&B's) when we up there hunting. It had the whole kit and it worked,, supposedly with coal and wood, but the family had run propane to it ... not quite as hot as coal or wood, but it boiled water on the stove top for coffee and kept that cabin warm. We were told it would bake bread and roast meat in the oven box, but my dad just used the warm water for cleaning us up after hunting all day, and made coffee. I will never forget the Great Western Stove Co. casting on the door because for several years my right hand had "Great West..." scarred into it. LOL I think I was 8 or 9 at the time. Thanks for a trip down memory lane.

Really nice stove, my grandmother always cooked on wood stoves. AFAIK, you put the wood in the rectangular top part and there are channels that take hot air around & out the oval chimney. There should be some 'keys' that open & close valves to control the heat. And the center bit is an oven. You can control the heat on the 'burners' by adding/removing the rings. As a side note, I always wanted a house with an Aga stove....

Looks like "Family Banquet Stove" around 1880's. This may have 2 fire boxes in it. The rectangle hinged top at left side looks like No grates or It is a wood burning also. Right side lower door is what I need to see inside, actually the front one also. Hope to see shaker grates somewhere, to burn the good cheap coal. Coal usually has fire brick in or around fire box.

I grew up with Mom cooking on a wood cook stove. Has long as the grates are good you're in business. The large middle door is for baking not sure why it is open on both ends ?. Maybe a part missing though you can make one, just something to hold the heat in. The middle door that is there is missing the temp gauge. You should be able to find a more modern one and make a plate to hold it.
    All my best.

The perfect little stove. The repairs should be easy, accept for that crack. Take a small drill and put a hole at the end of the crack to prevent it spreading any more. A good welder can make the repairs but there is a risk that the crack could become worse.
We always keep water kettle on the stove for humidity but in as much as you have a water tank on yours this alone will keep the house warm and humid during the winter.

If you don't end up using the mop bucket you might find one of the old copper canning tubs for your upper tank, I see them on ebay for 50-100 dollars. Copper would last for ever, and you could solder directly to it with your copper pipes. Would be a really sweet look.

Another idea about mounting the tank to the wall. How about building a really strong shelf from a barn timber or some rough cut 4 x 12, etc...Just sit the bucket or tub on top and drill a hole though the shelf for the pipe to run though. Just a thought.

Beautiful Victorian wood stove. It's going to be gorgeous when fully restored. I am warning people to check with their home insurance providers. before installation. Here in Canada, there seems to be a war on wood stoves by the insurance companies. Either forcing huge insurance premiums or voiding insurance for any home with a wood stove installed. My installation was according to all Federal and Provincial regulations and building codes, but the insurance company said "Nope...Remove it!"

we had a similar family banquette stove when i was young in grandmas farm house. we loaded small blocks of wood on the side with the vents.
middle was bread box. oven. flames went up over the oven. wire brush up and i use them 3m angle cleaning tool pads. and then stove paint :) restored cost more then worth maybe. and kiss theory simple paint restore you get money out of it or use it :) im sure it works fine. oo yeah very end by the stove pipe is a hot plate :) great temp for eggs bacon straight on it. the oil helps. BUT grease fires. so best to use a hotplate on the hot plate. :)

even if the stove is designed for coal, you can always burn wood in it. coal burns hotter than wood. Where i go on vacation every year, there are wood cook stoves there. quite enjoyable to cook on. Oven is a little tricky, but usually just a matter of turning whatever you are cooking.

Remember well, when Mama cooked on a kitchen range version before electric power lines came across our farm. Your's is much more ornate than hers. It had a warming closet above the cooktop. Like yours, it had an oven and a hot water reservoir on one end. One of my earliest chores was to keep her woodbox (behind the stove) filled with kindling and split wood. Mama baked biscuits twice a day in that oven.
I do hope you can restore it. And that you can either fabricate or locate the missing piece of the oven. For that project, it would, IMO, be well worth it to setup an electrolysis tank. (I used a 55 gal plastic barrel with a cut down stainless steel barrel for mine.) Take the stove apart, to the extent you can. Brush/wipe/vacuum with and OLD vac, the accumulated soot. After running parts through the electrolysis tank to remove rust/crud, reassemble using gasket material and stove cement, as needed. Finish off the parts that will not be chromed with a couple of applications of stove black polish.
I hope you can find someone with good castiron welding skills. Many welder's haven't learned this art from the past. For the leg, you may also be able to find a set of replacement legs, if you can't find a spare leg to match yours.
Wish you well, with this project. Hoping you can restore it and return it to a useful life. Breaks my heart to see these repairable treasures turned into "decor", while ruining their original capability.

I hope you have a good aim when you use that old 'round front' toilet. LOL
Like the idea of the "mop buckjet" systern.

I personally hate round front toilets but they didn't make elongated until a lot later...

I think the door would look good painted your favorite front door color too. We had windows and doors like that on our house when I was child and my dad sanded them down and I remember is so very difficult to sand the routered parts of boards around the windows and they are so easy to mess up and sand the rolled edges off flat and destroy them. It is a lot harder than you are thinking to sand down so I think it would be best to just paint it another color you like and it would be a lot faster too. Fancy wood stove. Is that a kitchen stove?
