    There's something about NES horror that makes it scarier than some modern day horrors. Especially that Macintosh series to NES. Still, it's one of those games that you watch in TH-cam "all death scenes in -insert video game here-" because there's so many weird ways to die.

    • @DGneoseeker1
      @DGneoseeker1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      FYI, Sweet Home, while being a logical predecessor to Resident Evil, isn't a direct inspiration. Gameplay-wise, inspiration was mostly Alone in the Dark. But Resident Evil, in its earliest form, was to be a sequel/remake of Sweet Home for PS1.

    Back in 1992, my stepdad randomly chose to rent the NES version for me. I was 8 years old at the time, and was traumatized by Monster Party's ending a few months earlier. I was already uneasy starting the game, but the minute I woke up in the car and heard that creepy music, I shut it off and refused to play it anymore.
    Well i consider that dodging a childhood trauma bullet, because in the year 2000, I'd retry it upon discovering how to use NES emulators and roms. I got to Scarlett O' Hara, was instantly met with that horrific face and vivid death description, and was chilled to the bone with fright despite now being 15. I sat there in silence -- realizing that if my 8 year old self had continued playing...

  • @ReinEngel
    @ReinEngel 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Deja Vu and Shadowgate are two of my favorite NES games of all time and I literally just found out there was a third game in the quasi-series thanks to this video. MUST. PLAY. IT.
    Seriously, Deja Vu was fucking awesome. Most adventure games today can't compare to the story in that game. Shadowgate was more "out there" with magic spells and trolls, but Deja Vu felt like real life, something very, VERY few video games accomplished back then. Games with a modern setting were always some of my favorites and when ranking them, Deja Vu is right up there with the Squaresoft Action/RPGs on the SNES (Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Evermore etc.) and Earthbound. I can't wait to see how this one ranks on this list.
    Another thing that deserves mentioning is the music. The soundtracks in both games were epic, pure and simple. IIRC, nearly every room in Shadowgate had its own tune, and they all kicked major ass. Deja Vu was a little light in the audio department, but still just as memorable. If you've never played Shadowgate, search on here for songs from it and tell me they aren't some of the best work in the history of the NES.

      Hey, you'll be VERY happy to know the original team that made these games has made a new 2014 edition of Shadowgate! It is MINDBLOWING how cool the new version is! Look on TH-cam for Shadowgate 2014 and I can guarantee you'll thank me! The soundtrack alone is worth the money and the painted style is remarkable! Also, the makers of these games are planning remakes of the other mac venture games as well!

      +Rein Engel Amen to that! I didn;t own a pc as a kid, so these games were the closest thing I could get to an actual adventure game. I wasn't disappointed, even with the limitations of using a controller these games sucked me in and did't let me go until I completed them. And you are correct, the music(especially Shadowgate) was incredible...they really made that 8-bit chip sing...I still find myself humming these tunes to this day, it just gets stuck in your head.

    I cannot remember if it was Shadowgate, Deja Vu or Unintivted but if you hit select you can quick jump between the action map, game screen/menu and action buttons.
    Made the game a little less tedious, also Shadowgate was first on the NES :)
    Speaking of Shadowgate, in Uninvited if get to the screen with the Phonograph if you try to play it the music will change to a very distorted remix of Shadowgate's main music theme :)

    Uninvited is scary for sure. But I played Shadowgate on the NES when I was young and I am still frightened by that game to this day. I remember playing it when I was 6 with my brother, it was getting dark outside and the room was dark. He died in the game while our doorbell rang, so he went out to answer the door. I was sitting there alone with the scary death theme and watching the reaper face. That image is still in my brain even to this day!

    The charm of these three games was discovering all the fun ways you can die (or go to jail in the case of Deja Vu). They are prime examples of trial-and-error gameplay at its finest, as standard logic seldom applies.

    I find that some of the music that was added to the NES port makes the game scarrier than the Mac port, as it can be quite eerie and moody. The music that plays when you're about to die (and then while dying) is fitting terrifying.
    All of the music in the game is great.
    I thought the publishing sequence for the NES was Shadowgate, Deja Vu, then Uninvited.

For the longest time I remembered this game but didn't remember its name so when I looked it up I couldn't find anything like it. After a while, I assumed that those vague memories were simply memories of a dream about playing a game. It wouldn't be the first time I've dreamt as if I'm in a game or playing a game.
    It's incredible to finally know that those old memories were real. This game must have made quite the impression for me to remember them so long. It's funny what you do remember vs what you don't from your childhood.

There is also the added bonus of having something of actual value, as opposed to the Nintendo store just not supporting downloads at a future point, or having actual original licensing problems with creators of the work itself.

      I am talking about long term storage of media, not common everyday use. Most removable media are fragile with constant use, and indeed some games have been lost completely due to companies simply biting the dust.
      I also would be an advocate of a better form of digital distribution that is practical and legal for all video-games of the past, unfortunately we are not there yet.
      This all being said, i am not against emulators or roms in the slightest.

      You have to renew those. Dig up George Romero and ask him. He lost the rights to Night of the Living Dead and now it's public domain.

    • @unimac6163
      @unimac6163 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brutallyhonest123 I know this is four years late but George Romero got shafted by a mistake that instantly released his movie to the public domain, not from a failure to renew. Copyright law has had major overhauls since then, there are no renewals and the NLD situation wouldn't have happened today.

    The original Mac version was literally the first game I ever played, at least that I can remember. I was something of an early reader, one of my earliest clear memories was when I was about 2 and I was so freakin' proud of myself cause I read all of "The Phantom Tollbooth" in only a couple of evenings and it was around the same age I spotted mum playing this on her 'puter and at first I thought it was odd that my mother would be reading a picture book on her 'puter and so I asked her and she explained to me it wasn't a picture book, it was a game and I was like "How can reading a picture book be a game" then she just let me hop on up and try despite her warnings of "It might scare ya" and I was immediately hooked. I found a love of text based adventure games right there, in fact my first encounter with The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy wasn't the radio show original, the book that most people think is the original, or the corny but fun 80s TV version (The mediocre American movie wasn't a thing yet.) but that in-fucking-furiating text adventure which made me say my first swear and get grounded.
    So yeah, this game is nostalgic to me. I never played the NES version and admittedly when I read the title of the video and saw the thumbnail art, which at a distance looked less like a skeleton lady and more like a scarecrow reaching out from a giant pumpkin or something so I assumed it was a different game. Also I will say even though I understand and even to an extent agree the game is creepier without a soundtrack, I admit that the music you played from the game is _awesome._ Seriously it's got a really good goddamn soundtrack. =) Also, isn't replacing a pentagram with a star a little... well.... pointless? I know that pentagrams actually _show_ the lines used to make the star intersecting and what not, but it's still a freakin' star and you see regular stars in the same type of occult stuff, they shoulda made it a funky circle or something. That's like putting in a painting of "The Nude Maja" in a game then porting it to the NES where they decided to just put Maja in a pair of pants. Yeah, you can't see the pubes anymore but her breasts are still on full display. Then you feel even dumber because you realize there's a version of the painting where she's in a snazzy dress.

    This game used to scare the sh*t out of me when I was by myself in my room and no one was home. One time the game froze, but the music kept playing (so creepy!) so I ran downstairs and out the front door... and then I realized my brother was missing...
