The artist from the Evo is the same as Crossbell, but I think the reason it doesn't look as good is that they went back and redid all three games at once. So I imagine they rushed it and as a result it lacks a lot of the details that add up over time. Thankfully crossbell looks great! I think he refined his style there.

I really like the original theme songs of sc and the 3rd, and for sc, original Silver will, golden wing's singer Yamawaki just sounds more powerful then evolution's version by Kotera. i always get goosebumps when i hear them. I am using Cry for ne, cry for you as my phone's ringtone. I wanted to use Silver Will, Golden Wings as ringtone at first, but i needed to trim it, and i couldn't find the part that i wanted to cut.

It feels like they expected people who would play the Evolution games to already be familiar with the normal versions. Only reason why they would spoil the whole games. The regular openings seem to be quite good in showing how great the game is going to be without giving to much away, which actually helps people who might feel the first parts FC are not eventful enough.

Yeah, the EVO openings are more meant to be fanservice scenes of cool moments from the game for those who played the original, so they openly spoil it assuming you know what’s going on. They’re supposed to not be for newcomers

I don't think I ever realized Weissman was standing in front of the Aureole in the original SC opening LOL - I know Evo is far worse with spoilers, but damn... that said, when I saw it, I guess I just assumed it was a fancu shot rather than anything literal

So, the evolution openings for the Crossbell arc are similar in that they have quite a few spoilers - comparative to the original openings. And they don’t do what SC Evo did and forget that several key main characters exist (Agate and Zin are just absent from SC evo’s OP).
Though it’s a ways off, I should also note that each Cold Steel game has 2 openings as well, but they’re not based on new versions or anything.
Basically, they all have 1 opening that is much like the standard opening of every other Trails game. There’s art, animation and so on. The other OP sort of acts as like a cast list, showing the characters one by one with their name (and VA in the Japanese versions) alongside music. These are only spoilers if you note knowing most of the main cast’s names before playing, but there are a few instances that could be considered as such.

I watched all the openings after I started Cold steel 2 as my second trails game and I never considered the evolution OPs to be spoiler heavy because I had no idea what was going on and always just got more excited for what's to come. But I might be the exception because imo it's only a spoiler with context and without context it's just an anime opening.

I 100% agree with you. People are so hypersensitive about "spoilers", and rarely actually use any critical thinking about what exactly is being "spoiled".
There were only maybe two things in the SC Evo opening that I could even consider legitimate potential spoilers, and even then it's entirely dependant on if the player would even remember by the time those events played out in the story. We all need to remember just how long these games can be lol.
But aside from than one, every other opening here was completely free of legitimate spoilers without context.

I think EVO has so much spoiler because dev assume that people who playing EVO is the one who already bought the original games.
BTW even with more animation I think SC original OP is look better than EVO one.
The cutting in EVO SC look so weird.
Especially that camera panning at 15:05 .
Maybe just nitpicking because I’m an editor.

for all the stuff the Sky SC Evo intro spoils... not one shot of Kevin
and sadly they did not "get the memo" about the evo intros. if anything the Crossbell Evo intros are even MORE spoiler-y
I think the Evo intros would have been much better as outros with the credits playing over them

I mean you could still listen to future opening as they play. Just don't watch it (which might be more maddening for some than others). Only say that cause I love the opening songs for the future games, and I say it be shame that you can't at the very least listen to them until after you finish them.
Love Second Chapters opening, not just the song but the foreshadowing is subtle and quick enough that a player's likely not to notice things on the first watch. Things like the shadowed figure of "you know who" being held by Pater Mater and the only time in the opening they're "seen" to boot. And while they show the Glorious they never let you take in the true scale of it, so that shot later in the game can keep its weight. Or the burning village with zero context.
By comparison I despise the Evo opening version with all my being. They put everything on the table yet also so leave so much off and don't get me started on how they look. Just everything involving Joshua is a mess in general.
Also Agate and Zin are just gone, nowhere to found, like the minor party members being gone is marginally understandable but feels pretty glaring for those two. But don't worry you Pater Mater and Ragnard being obsessively shoved in your face will definitely make up for their absence. See how cool the robot and dragon are! (Although they'll never be seen enough in game to justify their inclusion to this extent)
15:55 And then here's all the antagonists lining up in that one shot, minus Walter for some reason, like they spoil everything else but draw a line there.

There is a YT channel out there which has the various albums available for listening pleasure so I could probably pop by there and give it a whirl (they showecase the album covers rather than the actual videos so that should be fine).
      Thank you for the suggestion!!

  • @Dogedoge337

My main issue with the spoilers in openings is that the original ones are a bit more subtle about them, especially since many of the spoilery bits are just stills that remain on screen for a brief moment. Like many anime openings, you wouldn't be able to make much sense of them until you gain the context behind those scenes as you play the game, or if you're pausing the video to take a closer look.
On the other hand, the Evo openings don't have that consideration and outright shows fully animated scenes for key moments in the game's story. They sure are nice to see animated renditions of things you've played through, but I wouldn't take them over the originals. I also like the music in the originals much more, but that's more of a personal preference for original stuff rather than remixes.

I view the Evo versions as tributes for people that can't get enough of these games and want to play them again, but yes don't go near their openings with a ten-foot barge pole if you don't want to be spoiled.
The normal openings always contain spoilers too but half the time most people won't know what they are looking at because they won't have the context and/or they won't be able to put what they know from the other games together to deduce it; having said that @elehayyme you are very observant and good at putting the pieces together so I would suggest always avoiding the openings. I think with the original FC opening, they were trying to imitate an 80s Studio Ghibi / Joe Hisaishi "Laputa: Castle of the Winds" kind of opening. Then in second chapter they kind of got into doing Falcom stuff; people forget Nihon Falcom are a small company; they don't have the budgets to fork out on super-duper openings.
I think the original opening to The 3rd is my favorite - Love the music, short and too the point and most of the opening just covers the things that we had already learnt from being on the Lusitania; apart from Ries who we get introduced to very soon after that opening. Osborne and Rufina shown, but you won't know who they are at that point.

Oh you actually finished the arc only recently. I found your SC playlist a while ago looking for new people to watch playing the series, but eventually went with someone playing the game I was playing at the time (Azure)
I think i'll look into catching up on your videos soon, I really liked that reaction video.
I really like the idea of the evo videos, but only post-playing. Too many spoilers, but great videos if you know the context. I experienced the original OPs and they were interesting enough! Music is already great although I would have preferred a vocal version of the song in the FC opening

    @LyffPhoenix 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Evo openings keep getting progressive worse regarding spoilers, SC being the exception. Crossbell ones are wild (and according to SC's opening, Agate and Zin don't exist haha)
But yeah, even the original ones usually have a lot.
One thing that I always like to do, though, is listen to the opening songs some times before playing the game. It enhances a lot those moments with osts that use the same melody, instrumental versions, etc. And I actually like all of them. It "just" requires some extra work to avoid spoilers, like browser extensions that block words/thumbnails.
Also on the topic of spoilers, unfortunately I've seen people going around other channels and social media sending them, especially with more recent arcs. Deliberately, I mean. They don't like something, they go out of their way to ruin it for other people. Typical pathetic hater behavior. I can only (really) hope this kind of thing won't happen to you

      @calebjacobson3139 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah did that a bit with CS, listened to the opening till it transitions over to the title screen theme and that was my cue to look. Then before playing it again, went into the games configuration to disable the opening on startup for the subsequent times.

U don’t seem to understand how ops works, of course there going to be spoilers that going to hype people up, but most people are not going to be thinking of the scenes from op when reaching that part of the game only a rare few would actually think about, your the only person I seen with this type of complaint

I like that the Evolution openings exists as a curiosity, however, I'll rather watch the original ones from Falcom. The Falcom ones contain spoilers, but they are shown in a way that it's difficult to notice on a first watch. If you re-watch them with context it's easier to notice what they did.
Falcom usually does the openings in-hosue, but they did outsource a few of them: Tokyo Xanadu (fenomenal opening), Ys 8, Cold Steel 3, Cold Steel 4, and the 5 evolution games. For some reason, they got worse as time went by, with Sky SC and CS4 being probably the worst animation wise.
After that, falcom returned to do them in-house again.
There is also an anime OVA that tells part of the Sky SC game. If you haven't watct it now without fear os spoilnig yourself. The OVA takes a few liberties with the plot, but animation wise is quite good.

wow the evo openings are terrible, the characters looks completely different, like yeah I know that was Renne in the 3rd Evo OP, but if I didn't know it was supposed to be her I would never have guessed thats her. Also wtf that was supposed to be Richard? lol
Also to answer your question I hate the Evo art, and I mostly skipped the Evo OPs when you got to those because they're so terrible.

  • @pkunk

Wow! Second evo opening is terrible. You probably should put "spoilers" in the video title. Also did you see the original ending of FC?
Regarding art style and animation for Sky trilogy. While Makoto Shinkai had already left Falcom by that time, you still can see his influence in sky and clouds.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll amend the title accordingly.
I believe I did see the original ending of FC but can't recall exactly at this moment (things are a bit of a jumble due to some other circumstances in life right now).
