I think it's IMPORTANT to point out one mistake, it' NOT YOUR personal preference where the bit goes, but the horses! All horses will vary on where their bit goes, and what bit they like, and it's important to fit this right!

Thanks for the video SmartPak! I adjusted my bridle without any help, and after my ride my horse spit it out! I felt so bad about so I was rushing around to figure how to fit a bridle, and I found this video! Once again, SmartPak saves the day!

Hi Animalluver1021, thanks for watching our video and for your question. At the very end of the video, the two horses pictured at the center and right-hand side of the screen have flash attachments on their nosebands. Flash nosebands are designed to help encourage the horse to take contact by limiting their ability to open their mouths in an effort to avoid contact. I hope that’s helpful! - SmartPaker Sarah

Why do you use a noseband?

    • @smartpak

+Tuwa Källqvist Hi Tuwa, thanks for your question! A noseband can be used for several reasons, but mainly it is to help keep your horses mouth closed and quiet, discouraging evasion of the bit by crossing his jaw or getting his tongue over the bit. Having a soft and closed mouth encourages contact with the bit, which enhances communication between horse and rider. A noseband is also necessary if you are using other equipment such as a standing martingale, as that attaches to a noseband. If you are going to use a noseband on your horse be sure to check in with your trainer or barn manager to ensure the proper fit for your horse! Happy Riding! - SmartPaker Jessy

I'd prefer a bitless bridle. Bits hurt even if it is a "gentle bit"

It all depends on the riders hands.

Damage can be done with a bitless bridle too. You're still putting pressure on the horse's face, just in a different location. The skin and tissues around the mouth are softer and more elastic than on the bridge of the nose... try pulling the corner of your own mouth and then pressing on your nose- you'll feel the difference. I'd rather have someone pull my mouth than pull my face around with a rope or leather.

Damage can be done with any piece of equipment if used incorrectly. Having soft hands while also having control over your horse wont hurt them. Bits are mostly used for control of your horses head but using the reins shouldn’t be your only way of turning. It also requires a lot of leg: if you want to go left, you use your right leg to encourage the horse to go left and vise versa.
