    As someone in a wheelchair, I'm very grateful they have codes like these. I cant explain how big of a pain it is to deal with busted ass ,"grandfathered in" sidewalks. Seems silly, but it does really mean a lot. Also the angle for getting the cars in without scraping is awesome. Wish that was also a code all cities had to follow. But nope. Everyone just drives SUVs and trucks instead.

    • @MrCarGuy
      @MrCarGuy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      But they're forcing property owners to do it themselves when most of their own sidewalks are not to code. What's the point of even using the same sidewalk if the wheelchair turns into the street 70% of the time? Just hypocritical regulations.

    • @RecBuddha
      @RecBuddha 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@MrCarGuy Because it is too expensive to do all at once wholesale. So as new buildings are put in and streets/sidewalks are redone, they fix them as they can. Eventually everything will hopefully be done, but by then I'm sure there will be new codes. =/

It is quite literally the cheapest rate I could find (I can't afford $350+ /month for parking) but also, interestingly enough, an ultramodern garage with lifts similar to what Matt has above - that has me constantly wondering: what's the catch???

    Fantastic place! Wish this existed in my city. It will undoubtedly be expensive... assuming Matt wants to recoup his investment. Let’s do a bit of math: 20? Spaces and the cost to build was ~$2? Mm? At $200/month/spot, it will take 42(!!) years to break-even. And that’s just on the build cost alone! Then add staffing, upkeep, repairs, maintenance, utilities, and you’re looking at more like never to break-even.

      The building is very well engineered. It must have cost a fortune to architect, plan, permit and build. His storage rates are somewhat competitive, maybe averaging a little over $1,000 - $1,200 per car or around $1.9M a year for just car storage. The property tax will be significant, but staffing costs should be low. The rest is whatever utilities and maintenance. I’d say the value is pretty good for a car collector, but maybe a little slower return for Farah and co. It is hard to find proper car storage in LA. Few homes have anything more than 2 secured and covered spots, and the cost to build anything bigger for the average supercar homeowner is prohibitive. I had to spec in a car lift in my home build for this reason. LA should be a good market, since you can have a $5M home with only a 2-car garage, and no place for a rich man to store his expensive toys. I would NOT want to be the car at the bottom of those lifts, though. Just can’t imagine how many times it needs to get moved for the guys above it. Maybe a good setup if you can lease an entire stack, but still seems cumbersome.

      As I'm sure a mean-spirited commenter would love to tell you, I have family money that I used on this project. And as hard as it was, it would have likely been much harder if I had a bunch of investors or a bank breathing down my neck.
      But honestly, and I really mean this, the funding would not have been very hard. From the very beginning, I showed my plans and basic drawings to a few people, trying to get them to be customers, and they offered me millions of dollars to invest. I have a list like 30 people long for "when you build the next one call me." If you have a great idea, and you do a bunch of legwork up front to put together a good presentation, and if you're in the right circle of people, you can get the money with a great idea, thoroughly vetted out.
      I am incredibly privileged in my life in literally countless ways. I'd like to think that I want to use my privilege for something good, or at least something benign, and not like, world domination. My aspirations are fairly modest: a couple buildings around my home city that offer a good service to the car enthusiast community.

    Something tells me that having a 3000 gal per minute fire supression system in a building with a cigar lounge and potentially millions of dollars worth of cars could possibly be a nightmare waiting to happen.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The wall in between the lounge and the warehouse is 2-hours fire rated, and the sprinklers are independent. A fire on one side would have to be very, very bad to affect the other side. The city's concern is coming from the warehouse side, not the lounge side.

      @tboodman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there's a fire under one sprinkler only that sprinkler will go off, it doesn't trigger the rest to activate or anything, so at least it extinguishes whatever is right there even if it is worth a lot.

    • @shannons1886
      @shannons1886 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I’m pretty sure that is B.S. Earthquakes are measure on a logarithmic scale. Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; as an estimate of energy, each whole number step in the magnitude scale corresponds to the release of about 31 times more energy than the amount associated with the preceding whole number value.

    As an electrician I’m doing the load calculations and those 20hp hydraulic pumps will use next to nothing compared to the battery tenders that you’re going to have running. Also even with all those tenders running and the lights going you should be able to run 2 of those hydraulic lifts at the same time, just don’t start them at the same time. You might hear big clunk from your main breaker. Also the roll up fire doors have a heat link of an amalgam that melts at 140 degrees. Once the link melts the spring release is released and down goes papí.
