  • Firearms generally have a very specific use in mind...and that is absolutely the case today...where we look at the Ruger Mini-14 5855 model in a first look/first impression and general overview video. I discuss why for me this was a perfect choice to add to my firearms lineup and how I intend on using this. Some of the pros...some of the cons...but the details in a general overview, and in future videos we will get this into practical practice and shooting scenarios.

I have one. Never failed. The only thing that is odd is that for some reason Ruger's action are a bit brutal. My Mini14 just ejects the spent cartridge and sends it flying to the next county.

That’s because it’s based on the Garand/M14 Modified Garand action that was designed back in the day when basically long action cartridges (30-06 in this case) were the order of the day. Heavy cartridges/cases required a lot of gas to function properly.

That safety is the same as the M-1 garand. It's puposely made that way for the ability to disengage ONLY when the finger is going for the trigger, as it should be.

My suggestions as a Mini 14 owner.
Replace your set screws to your rear sight. Get the next longest length. They have vibrated loose on mine, making me loose my sights windage.
Do not bother to remove your bolt.
It is a pain. Use a cleaning spray and just lube the pin and extractor.
Lube up the tracks well and you will get the best performance.
But do clean under your stock.
The burned powder smell from your gas piston lingers.
If your bolt hold back catches before the mag is empty, adust your left magazine tab down.
Your left round in the mag can hit the tab to activate your bolt hold back
Other then that. Enjoy your mini 14.
I get very good shots at 100 yards without a scope.

If you remove your bolt lock cover plate, then removing and replacing your bolt is super easy. But on the other hand, it doesn’t get very dirty anyway. Most of the carbon buildup is at the gas block. It’s almost a self-cleaning rifle.

People base their opinions off the 70's 80's produced mini 14's. The new 581 and higher series of mini can shoot and be made to shoot better than you may think. However that takes a little more than bolting things on, but can be done resonable price wise. Take a look at accuracy systems for their mini products that encompass more than handguards and stocks. Mine shoots well with 55 gr bullets, stick with lighter bullets or venture into handloading. Replace the rear sight with tech sights.

The 5 round flush fit magazines are very handy for sighting the rifle in. One can also purchase larger magazines. I run 20 rounders in my Mini's and have a couple 10 rounders. I also did purchase several 5 rounders...one can never have too many.

The Mini-14 has a lot of character with an old school appeal that you don't get with an AR. It's a nice handling little rifle. It seems to escape most rifle bans as you allude to, which is interesting because the Min14 can do anything an AR15 can do. The Mini is more expensive and less flexible and less accurate than the AR but still worth owning and is a wonderful alternative in places where you can't own an AR. Garand rifle owners (like me) love the Garand style safety. :)

Great video! Congrats on your purchase. You made a great choice.
    I'm a huge Mini 14 fan!
I own 3 AR's, and without question prefer the Mini 14 for most everything over any of my AR's.
    A few things:
Stick with only factory Ruger Mags, whatever the capacity.
Aftermarket mags are hit or miss. Mostly miss.
The Mini comes WAY! WAY! WAY! Over gassed!
There is no need to launch your empty rounds into the next County!
That effects your accuracy a FRIGGIN TON!!!!!!!
Your action comes back very violently, and impacts the receiver,
    reducing accuracy BIG TIME!
Fortunately for about $30, you can get a gas bushing kit from Accuracy Systems
that will solve that issue. You will also need a torque wench to tighten down the
screws down on the gas block after changing out the bushings.
It takes a little experimenting, but once you have it dialed your
empties will be ejected 8-10 ft from you instead of 35ft.
Your gun will be way more controllable and a lot more accurate.
I sent my trigger group off to get a trigger job done on it. Huge difference!!!!
The stocks on Ruger Mini's suck! They don't fit the action as tight as they could.
Choate makes a way better version for about $70
Much tighter fit. If your action has play in your stock accuracy suffers BIG TIME!
Down the line, those peep sights aren't going to cut it anymore.
Get yourself a forward rail like an Ultimak and mount a Circle/Dot reflex sight like a Holosun
HS510C. Absolute 1000% GAME CHANGER! It is the way to go! Trust me!
I have a couple of Marine Buddies who absolutely drool over my Mini 14.
They probably don't want to admit it, but they also prefer it to their AR's. Just saying.

    • @romeoalphafoxtrot9517
      @romeoalphafoxtrot9517 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Changing the gas bushing to a smaller size improves the accuracy by reducing the violence of the action when it cycles.
The piston slams into the receiver so hard each time it jars the gun. If you reduce this effect it helps with accuracy big time.

    Congratulations on getting a Mini14 platform .
Just a few tips from my experience from running 2 of them for many years.
Stick with factory Ruger mags or if you can find them the discontinued Tapco Gen 2 mags.
I’ve tried MANY other mags 🙄 & unless you like practicing malfunction drills , stick with Ruger mags..
Use green or blue medium strength thread locker on the windage screws for the rear sight.
Without it they’ll slowly back out after repeated firing no matter how snug you think they are .
Specter gear mag pouch for the buttstock is a awesome addition for a grab & go rifle.

I got the 14 and the 30 they are the my two favorite rifles to shoot with. Good accuracy and reliability. I do not own an AR however I have many AKs and other sporting rifles ARs have just never appealed to me. Usually when i finally decide to buy one just so i can say i have one in my collection I go to the gun store and see something else that catches my eye and go with that. It doesn't help that the AR has been shoved down the throat of the American consumers for so many years now. You have to imagine a prosecutor waving it around in a courtroom for the jury to behold if you ever need to use it for self-defense. You could be totally justified in using it, but at the end of the day, if the jury thinks your rifle looks too scary for anyone but a blood thirsty individual to own, that trial probably won’t end well.

I have a C39 7.62 x 39 sporter Ak from century arms, and I want a Mini 14 to get into the 5.56 cartridge. Being from Commiefornia, the mini 14-30 with the Cogburn arsenal stripper clip adapter allows you to feed the magazine like a sks with stripper clips! I can carry a good 60-80 rounds in each mag pouch in my CR7 Condor chest rig. I’m currently rocking 4 magazines for my C39 Ak with 3 stripper clips and a single mag atop of them. It has velcro and a clip to keep them shut and preventing anything falling out. It’s a fast way to reload magazines and allows you to carry more rounds than having 4 10 round magazines per pouch (again I’m in Commiefornia). So my approach would be the same for the mini 14. Keep 2-4 magazines from Ruger and then keep 6-8 stripper clips per pouch once I get a mini 14. A-TM Folding stock and Hannibal rail+venom red dot 😊

One very old, one newer stainless one and one super new stainless one. Both of the last two shoot exactly the same…. Minute of beer can out to 100 yds with ghost ring sights. With a low power scope, I can take down deer sized game or a adult zombie at 150-200yds. The Mini’s just work! I love them and wouldn’t trade them for anything. In the military we had M16s and I am comfortable with the platform. But 1) I find them boring and 2) My wife isn't from the U.S. and in her country only the criminals in the Favelas have M16s, combined with the constant bombardment of news attacks on the platform, it was the one hardline she put down around what firearms are in our house. I doubt very few people can get off five shots at any coyote or fox. I’d much rather carry two five round mags than one 10 round. I also own a Ruger American Ranch Rifle that utilizes the AR style magazines. The typical 5 round AR mag is to long because it has to clear the mag well of an AR. The safety on a mini 14 is the same safety as on the almost 6 million m1s the 6.5 million m1 sarbines the 1.4 million m14s. Then there are over 1.3 million m1as 1.4 million mini 14s and mini 30s plus you get the point.

I have some preban twenty round factory mini 14 magazines I will sell you. They are literally marked law enforcement use only and they are like new condition. I have had them for a long time. They are from quarterback before the ban when Ruger would only sell 20 round mags to law enforcement.
