Interesting. I've never filtered water in NZ. Very seldom carry it in my pack. In the North Island I've hardly ever been far from clean water in the bush. As one dude has said, Macpac gear is good. Tents, sleeping bags, packs.
sensible video! when I finally return to overnight backpacking, I'll probably opt for a squeeze water filter because I'm too impatient to wait for gravity. And I'll make sure to keep that filter in my sleeping bag if there's any risk of freezing temperatures at night! I remember the last time I ran out of water in the mountains. I did discover a small lake after a while and refilled from that, but I could see the mosquito larvae swimming just outside my water bladder and then I heard a sheep bleat nearby... I was so nervous about getting sick! I was okay but I never want to run that risk again! Also: funny, I'd always pictured bivvy sacks going around your sleeping mat but apparently they don't have to!
Water purification is my number 1 pet peeve. I’m obsessive about it haha.
@@AlexanderAyling Personally I would go for the water from the creek over the roof, gutter, water tanks instalation. Do you filter that water? It seems like you might be able to find a spring or dig a shallow well somewhere on your land that would have good water.
Flashlight! It gets a different kinda dark in the woods 😂
How much does your pack weight full? I find anything over 30lb in my Hyperlight to be a good weight, anything more and its more of a chore than fun hiking.
just one edit...we don't own the great outdoors, we are just passing by and should leave no trace
Could you talk about minimal gear for toddlers or family camping? Best sleep system for 1-2 yr olds?
Yes please
so true when the sleeping bag help and make me feel comfy when i go to mountain
i watched the video because it is engaging, very good job
Thank you! Hope you subscribe and keep watching. Check this one out next th-cam.com/video/97oxAs45aE8/w-d-xo.html
Sorry, but after 45 years of backpacking and over 10k miles. I don't use much of anything you suggest. My pack is around 18 lbs. with a weeks worth of food. That's minimalistic. But hey, enjoy yourself out there and stay safe.
what tips would you have for a beginner? i plan to go solo backpacking, should i carry a weapon? i haven't much upper body strength, and have no camping experience whatsoever. i was thinking of taking my first trip with a random stranger i meet that is experienced, but there are so many backpacking murder stories im not too sure!!
Very good advice Alex
Thank you
I love my thermarest, but I hate how it sounds like sleeping on a bag of potato chips. I use a ULA Circuit backpack (also a ultralight backpack brand) and I love it. I used to use a REI backpack but I felt that a lot of my gear weight was from the EMPTY backpack and my spine didn't appreciate it lol
Love this video! Have you looked much into Macpac? I swear I’m their number 1 customer. That’s our go to hiking brand over in Aus and NZ!
Always the highest quality synthetic products :) I really hate the thought of something dying or being in pain just so I can be a little more comfortable.
Loved the sense of humor. 'Sometimes,' I laughed. Sometimes, let's just say, I realized I had a sheltered life and need the outdoors more. I'm just afraid of socializing with the 'lions, tigers, and bears, oh my'. I 'can' be nice and friendly, just not with them.
This was a very helpful video! I've never been camping before but if I ever did go I would definitely take your advice here and by the way you had a couple of really funny points in the video especially about the poop💩🤣 and I'm sorry you had to do all that squatting...
Hahah thank you Angela - glad you had a few laughs
@@AlexanderAyling you always like to make things cute and very informative for everyone
@@AlexanderAyling yes tyvm❤
Thank You good advice - great help.
first time i watched a video that was posted "1 minute" ago
Hope you enjoy 😊
How are the homestead renovations going?
Next weeks video is a one year overview. Stay tuned :)
What Hiking boots do you wear for long trips @alexander Ayling?
I use the gossamer gear mariposa 60 litres back pack. Its an ultra light backpack. It was big enough to carry All of My gear, our 2 person tent and all of the food that My son and I needed for hiking 9 days without the oppetunity of resupplying. I can recommend a super light back pack if your pack is light. And I can recommend a light pack because it really makes your hike easyer out there, and more healthy for your body in the long run. And you have the space in the back pack to bring luxury items or to bring back home a Nice souvenir from the outdoors if the rest of yor load is not too heavy and if that is ok where your are hiking.
But if you carry a heavy load when hiking, I dont think i would recommend ultra light back packs. I am not sure it will support your shoulders and back that great. So in My opinion you have to have some ultra light gear to use ultra light backpacks, or just having the expirience to pack pretty light though your gear is heavy, or the knowledge to place the gear right in your back pack when you are hiking, or being used to carry heavy loads on your shoulders, back and hips.
I also use the thermarest neoair sleeping pad and loves it and the bfree filter, and loves it :).
With all the current talk of WWIII kicking off soon, this video will come in handy!
Sad but true
There are lots of crazies in the world & that everybody else need to prepare & arrange their lives for, because of these crazies - we had Hitler now we have this idiot
bad vibes
good stuff.
Thank you Vik!
OMG! A realistic minimal essential gear list! I've got to admit, I thought you would be one of those '5lb base weight' people.... I would add a compass (learn how to use it).
Ewok homes? How rude. lmao.
Having owned both down and synthetic (and I've used a hybrid), I prefer down by far. in fact jus this morning I ordered my new Nemo Riff bag.
I will likely never own an inflatable mat. Too much potential for things to go wrong with holes. I still use my 20 year old Thermarest CCP. It's so old it doesn't;t even fold. I roll it up. lol.
As I've always "cowboy camped" I bought my first tent this year. A Durston Xmid1! Love it so far.
I agree 60-ish Lars is plenty for most people watching a video on minimalism... Personally I love my Osprey Exos 58. The 2022 model has an excellent weight to load ratio with a very comfortable fit.
Omg I could go on and on... BSR stove... stainless vs titanium... Sawyer vs Befree...
Solid into video.
No plastic bottle but plastic water bladder?
Victorinox SAK > Leatherman, just saying.
👍✌️💪
Two person hubba tent for husband and wife? Hubba Hubba.
Most affordable sleep system for a fat side sleeper? Lol
I can’t believe you don’t understand how bad it is to just buy shit at Amazon. At this point who cares, but there was a time when a man could work for himself and make a living.
I like winter camping in norther Minnesota. The only thing I don’t bring is GOD.
Oooof I got giardia when I lived in Zimbabwe 🫢 can attest… it’s no fun 😆
Diarrhea!!! 😂🤘🏽
Hahaha yes 😭 and gross burps 😆
Very good advice Alex
Thanks Effie! Hope you enjoyed the video
