Interesting. I've never filtered water in NZ. Very seldom carry it in my pack. In the North Island I've hardly ever been far from clean water in the bush. As one dude has said, Macpac gear is good. Tents, sleeping bags, packs.

sensible video! when I finally return to overnight backpacking, I'll probably opt for a squeeze water filter because I'm too impatient to wait for gravity. And I'll make sure to keep that filter in my sleeping bag if there's any risk of freezing temperatures at night! I remember the last time I ran out of water in the mountains. I did discover a small lake after a while and refilled from that, but I could see the mosquito larvae swimming just outside my water bladder and then I heard a sheep bleat nearby... I was so nervous about getting sick! I was okay but I never want to run that risk again! Also: funny, I'd always pictured bivvy sacks going around your sleeping mat but apparently they don't have to!

@@AlexanderAyling Personally I would go for the water from the creek over the roof, gutter, water tanks instalation. Do you filter that water? It seems like you might be able to find a spring or dig a shallow well somewhere on your land that would have good water.

How much does your pack weight full? I find anything over 30lb in my Hyperlight to be a good weight, anything more and its more of a chore than fun hiking.

Sorry, but after 45 years of backpacking and over 10k miles. I don't use much of anything you suggest. My pack is around 18 lbs. with a weeks worth of food. That's minimalistic. But hey, enjoy yourself out there and stay safe.

what tips would you have for a beginner? i plan to go solo backpacking, should i carry a weapon? i haven't much upper body strength, and have no camping experience whatsoever. i was thinking of taking my first trip with a random stranger i meet that is experienced, but there are so many backpacking murder stories im not too sure!!

I love my thermarest, but I hate how it sounds like sleeping on a bag of potato chips. I use a ULA Circuit backpack (also a ultralight backpack brand) and I love it. I used to use a REI backpack but I felt that a lot of my gear weight was from the EMPTY backpack and my spine didn't appreciate it lol

Loved the sense of humor. 'Sometimes,' I laughed. Sometimes, let's just say, I realized I had a sheltered life and need the outdoors more. I'm just afraid of socializing with the 'lions, tigers, and bears, oh my'. I 'can' be nice and friendly, just not with them.

I use the gossamer gear mariposa 60 litres back pack. Its an ultra light backpack. It was big enough to carry All of My gear, our 2 person tent and all of the food that My son and I needed for hiking 9 days without the oppetunity of resupplying. I can recommend a super light back pack if your pack is light. And I can recommend a light pack because it really makes your hike easyer out there, and more healthy for your body in the long run. And you have the space in the back pack to bring luxury items or to bring back home a Nice souvenir from the outdoors if the rest of yor load is not too heavy and if that is ok where your are hiking.
But if you carry a heavy load when hiking, I dont think i would recommend ultra light back packs. I am not sure it will support your shoulders and back that great. So in My opinion you have to have some ultra light gear to use ultra light backpacks, or just having the expirience to pack pretty light though your gear is heavy, or the knowledge to place the gear right in your back pack when you are hiking, or being used to carry heavy loads on your shoulders, back and hips.
I also use the thermarest neoair sleeping pad and loves it and the bfree filter, and loves it :).

OMG! A realistic minimal essential gear list! I've got to admit, I thought you would be one of those '5lb base weight' people.... I would add a compass (learn how to use it).

  • @ewoksalot

    Ewok homes? How rude. lmao.
Having owned both down and synthetic (and I've used a hybrid), I prefer down by far. in fact jus this morning I ordered my new Nemo Riff bag.
I will likely never own an inflatable mat. Too much potential for things to go wrong with holes. I still use my 20 year old Thermarest CCP. It's so old it doesn't;t even fold. I roll it up. lol.
As I've always "cowboy camped" I bought my first tent this year. A Durston Xmid1! Love it so far.
I agree 60-ish Lars is plenty for most people watching a video on minimalism... Personally I love my Osprey Exos 58. The 2022 model has an excellent weight to load ratio with a very comfortable fit.
Omg I could go on and on... BSR stove... stainless vs titanium... Sawyer vs Befree...
    Solid into video.
