Those mishaps certainly test our patience and expand one's vocabulary. Myself, wife and trusty dog traveled 2 years in our rv, we had our mishaps but wouldn't have traded it for the world. Safe travels, and thanks for all your hard work.
Thank you very much for your kind words and well wishes, Clark! We're right there with you - we wouldn't trade this lifestyle for anything, mishaps or no.
When you spoke of your damage, my Wife and I had near tears of empathy for you. Last year I stopped to get gas near Chickahominy Reservoir, OR. I pulled in and no sooner than I did, the gas attendant had me back up. We were only there less than 10 seconds. Sure enough, a prius pulled in right behind me. Yes, you guessed it, I backed my trailer (thankfully, very gently) into the prius. Luckily, I only put a small dent in my sewer hose bumper. However, prius definitely had damage. I was nearly sick over it. I’m always careful. But it was at the end of a longer than normal travel day. And if you know that area, it was the last gas for over 100 miles. We were on vapors. So I was stressed enough to not be as attentive as normal. I definitely exercised my sailors tongue at myself later after setting up camp.

Really great job of capturing the essence of the Burr Trail Area. Video was excellent and always interesting facts/history, etc. Thanks for an entertaining & informative video. Don
What an informative video, Marc! We’d never heard of Burr Trail and the areas surrounding Capital Reef and the Glen Canyon dam. You’ve given us another Utah location to visit - thanks!
Great episode Marc! Glad to hear the new truck is exceeding your expectations, but sorry to hear you banged her up already! As they say, everything's fixable.
We have an f350 dually and it was really tall in the back end leaving little room for clearance with the fifth wheel. We took out the spacers between the leaf springs and rear axle of the truck. We remove the ones that came with, and put back shorter spacers. Gave us an extra couple of inches of clearance for the trailer.
Nice to hear that you figured that out, Lori! We have 7 inches of clearance, which should be adequate if I don't do anything stupid. Such was not the case this time.

I know that Burr Trail campground well. There's something about that spot - trying to get better shade I backed into a dead cedar branch and shattered the rear window on my trailer. And the no-see-ums there feasted on me every time I stepped outside. The next time there a huge thunderstorm flooded the canyon below and the sandy campground soil turned to slop. What a beautiful area. We spent a week west of there at Kodachrome SP And Bryce Canyon. The night skies were jaw dropping. Awesome Truck. Sorry about the damage. As a former Painter and now damage estimator I know what a pain that is going to get taken care of. And then the shops have to be narrowed down to Ford certified aluminum repair. Marc, I assume you also drove on Utah Rte 12. Definitely an awesome paved road too. We were there last September after heavy rains had flooded many roads and left them covered in wet and dry soil
Absolutely, Tim! Between getting to the Burr and leaving afterward we drove Route 12 in its entirety. We didn't focus on it in this episode as we have covered it in various sections through other episodes.
Beautiful area. Well damnit Marc thats too bad about the bedrail and cap, those angles can take you by surprise at times. Hope you had a Pie at Hells Backbone Grill. Marc if it makes you feel any better about your vehicular kerfuffle... I have yet to see a single 5th wheel and a single 5th wheel tow truck that does not have some damage to both the RV and the vehicle. Usually truck bed is all weird and bent out of shape like a tree fell on it and rv is all discombobulated. This is exactly why every time I hear people "how easy it is to back up a 5th wheel" I wince. In fact this is exactly why I get out of my RV every single time, no matter spotters and camp hosts trying to guide you in... After having few very short of disaster situationships.... I was like no way Jose... Never have "having eyes on back of your head and head on a swivel" are truer than when trying to navigate an RV somewhere. Despite parking like a hundred thousand times... my current RV managed to hit a bolt that is sticking out of my own driveway latch and put a 20 inch gash as I was backing in. I fixed it myself to point where its flush with bondo and a whole bunch of sand paper. I ended up putting a black walmart decal over the gash to at least hide it somewhat. I know exactly how you felt because you want to be both mad, park the darn thing and realize what repairs will cost.
Yep, you've nailed it. I was extra frustrated because it's not only a brand new truck, but also it was the very first day we'd towed with it! Screaming every expletive I could think of out in the middle of the southern Utah desert didn't help any, either. 😆
One of the best things i love about your videos is that i can take my rig anywhere you go so i love making a note of your spots...Only problem is ours is a 27ft motorhome and we dont pull a toad so that makes it hard to pull up stakes and explore the area....Love this spot though with the canyon views and all. Wondering if this would still be a good spot come summer months ...We are big on shade as we dont need internet (just rely on wifi whenever) and dont have solar, plus me and heat, we dont get along...Damn boss, You been having some bad luck lately with the repairs and all along with the back issues...Hope the back issues gone by now cause i know your well on your way to whatever comes next...Well, like they told me when i bought mine, if your going to use it, your going to fix it...More true words have never been spoken in the RV world i dont care what unit you have...Thanks for the video, lookin forward to what comes next....Stay safe, be well...
Alice and I watched this on the tv while drycamping here at petrified forest, we would love to hit that slot canyon. Bummer on the damage on the new truck but it sounds like you got it under control. What is that lens on your Sony, I know you told me before but i forgot. We hope to be seeing capitol reef in June. Love that switchback road. Alice wants to know how you operate the camera and drive at the same time, haha. Are you the only guy driving around the desert with a kayak? Larry
Funny Larry, but not once, but twice at Whitney Pocket (the next episode) I had complete strangers stop to comment that I was far from the water. 😄 That Sony's G-Series 18-105mm lens. I also have 35mm f2.0 fixed focal length lens for it, but seldom use it.
Excellent video with stunning footage!!! That sux what happened getting to your spot. We have had several close call with our 5ver tryn to get into boondocking spots. A lot of times, if it starts looking sketchy, my wife will get out with the radio and guide and monitor the situation. Has helped to prevent potential damage. One time earlier this year in Anza Borrego, we had to bail out of spot by backing up over a mile. She was mad as a pissed off hornet and I was cussing like a sailor.😂😂 Thanx!!! 👍😃🍻
Beautiful. It looks like the 5th wheel was with you down the Burr Trail switchback. Fantastic views. Would you recommend a 36 foot Class A towing a car for that Ride? Don
No fifth wheel on the switchbacks, we were just driving the truck. I wouldn't recommend the switchbacks for anything other than a truck camper or a class B.
@@GrandAdventure Well I feel better now. Looking at those turns, the steep cliffs at the shoulders and the general road conditions, I'm glad to hear that. I could not think of your 5th wheeler making it so easy. Don
The best advice I can give you is think beyond the five national parks. That's what everyone gravitates to, and frankly there is just as good, if not better out there without the flood of people.
Great video 👍. I would like to hike through that slot canyon. I usually go to visit my family in Southern Utah every summer so I will see if I can find it
Just a warning, it is super, super short! It's hard to spend more than about 15 or 20 minutes there. Nearby you will find slots like Spooky Canyon and others that will give you a full day trip.
@@najruqwi7008 this is by far, hands down the best guide to Southern Utah Canyons that don't require ropes: www.amazon.com/Non-Technical-Canyon-Hiking-Colorado-Plateau/dp/0944510345
@@kylenunley5038 there are probably about a half dozen spots. Some of them will be a little tight for you, but one in particular here maps.app.goo.gl/UALtEMRyX2cDGvYn6 would be no issue whatsoever. If you look at that spot in satellite view you will see what I mean.
Heh you have recaptured me after not watching for months while you did equipment reviews, You also seemed to be padding the videos with excessive use of the drone. Was not interested in watching five minutes of drone flights around some campground. But you are back with this video to your old form. Hope your back recovers, I know what it is like.
It sucks, doesn't it, Rick? We managed to put everything back together with a rubber mallet (thank you aluminum body panels!) to the point where it was difficult to even notice the damage, but we spent all summer without a working tonneau. Now that we're in snow country and snow accumulates in the truck bed, we're very happy to finally be getting it fixed.
I tore a hole in the bottom of the 5th wheel over the truck, a hole in the fiberglass on the front, destroyed a toolbox and damaged the front of the truck bed from the toolbox. But great boondocking spot.
Are there a lot of boondocking spots along the burr trail that I could take a 40’ fifth wheel? Obviously not on the switchbacks but between there and boulder?
There are a half dozen or more spots, Kyle. Some would be tight for you, but others, especially this one maps.app.goo.gl/UALtEMRyX2cDGvYn6 provide plenty of room. If you view that in satellite mode you will see what I'm talking about.

Don
We want to go to Utah next month. Never been and we are new to this. Looking for advise
The best advice I can give you is think beyond the five national parks. That's what everyone gravitates to, and frankly there is just as good, if not better out there without the flood of people.
@@GrandAdventure we absolutely want to be beyond the crowds. I think we could easily be off grid for 5 days with our rig
Thanks 👍

@@kylenunley5038 there are probably about a half dozen spots. Some of them will be a little tight for you, but one in particular here maps.app.goo.gl/UALtEMRyX2cDGvYn6 would be no issue whatsoever. If you look at that spot in satellite view you will see what I mean.
@@GrandAdventure thank you!
Heh you have recaptured me after not watching for months while you did equipment reviews, You also seemed to be padding the videos with excessive use of the drone. Was not interested in watching five minutes of drone flights around some campground.
But you are back with this video to your old form. Hope your back recovers, I know what it is like.
Thank you Bryan, glad to have you back.
I missed this episode. Been there, done that with truck and trailer damage. Hurricane, UT.
@@rickphillips4966 it certainly goes with the territory. Just like everything else, everything can be fixed or replaced.
I am curious to know which direction would you face your camper door if you had a choice.
Carl, for us it's East. That way we get the morning sun on the patio, but not the late afternoon sun.
So sorry about your back, truck, and 5th wheel
Thank you Naomi! Back is back to normal. And anything with the truck can be fixed or replaced. That's life.
Please tell us where you're staying? in the Burro trail.
Diana, the spot we stayed is linked via a Google Maps pin right in the video description.
We always pass the coffee house and never stop, is it really worth it🤷♂️
Yes it is. Quality coffee, stunning views and a unique story.
So those big rigs went down the switchbacks, or is there another way to get there?
No, you camp between Boulder and the switchbacks. I wouldn't recommend any RV other than a van or a truck camper descending the switchbacks.
Oh, wait a minute. You mean in Bullfrog? You can get the Bullfrog by state road.
@@GrandAdventure nonetheless they were down there at the campground.
@@GrandAdventure yes, sorry at the campground at the end.
@@safepetproducts yes that's in Bullfrog. State highways 95 to 276. They don't have to take the Burr.
Are there a lot of boondocking spots along the burr trail that I could take a 40’ fifth wheel? Obviously not on the switchbacks but between there and boulder?
There are a half dozen or more spots, Kyle. Some would be tight for you, but others, especially this one
maps.app.goo.gl/UALtEMRyX2cDGvYn6 provide plenty of room. If you view that in satellite mode you will see what I'm talking about.
@@GrandAdventure for some reason it’s not letting me pull anything up with that link. I appreciate you giving me some pointers. We will be down by Bryce in a couple months and would like to go check this out. Thank you!

@@GrandAdventure Thanks I got it now. Yes that is plenty big enough to fit. Thanks for the great content!
Did you haul your 5th wheel through all those switchbacks?
Oh, hells no. We were just driving the truck out exploring that day.
Good to know! THANKS! Won't attempt it with our truck camper....
@@cirrus820travelers9 in a truck camper you would be fine. In fact, we encountered two on the switchbacks.
Rvers...always going where they shouldn't 😂
You've been doing a lot of cussing lately. Did you make up any new ones?
I don't need to, I know all the good ones. 😉
Hey Marc Sorry to hear about your truck, trsiler and your back I feel your pain as I fell a.coupme.montjs ago on some black ice I am just now getting back to normal Stay safe friend
Oh my! Here's wishing you the speediest of recoveries.
Marc. Awesome to see you back on the road! Especially areas of Utah. Your videos are fantastic and and inspiring!
Thank you very much, Duke!
