Played a game against you last night! Was trying a slightly jankier variation of the elf deck you made a couple weeks ago. Thanks again for all the content!
My favorite Magic channel! I would like to see you using a gearhulk based dimir deck with magma opus in the historic! Heart deck that I use here in Brazil!
I agree “test of talents” is a narrow card, but it’s usefulness also depends on which deck you’re running. I mainly play sultai ultimatum and I run one test of talents because I find it to be useful against other control decks. I use other counterspells too like negate and mystical dispute, but test of talents can help me knock out the opponent’s “saw it comings” for example. Also, it gives me information about the enemy hand when I’m playing around counters. I could force them in a position where I can safely play ultimatum because I know which cards to play to prolong my ultimatum while still applying pressure. Test of talents is a unique card with narrow use, but it’s usefulness increases when your weakness is other control decks (i.e. sultai ultimatum).
Mystic Subdual is pretty good against mono white for turning off Luminarch etc. Slitherwisp & Bonder, if they live, win games by chaining one-cost blue spells (and then discarding 1d6+2 over-drawn lands) - the 'wisp is pretty good for sneaking in the extra points of damage against opponents who get their defences up and turtle for the long game. I know you don't read comments, @covertgoblue, but fun deck. Thanks!
I used to run 4 of Test of Talents. I quickly learned how narrow it is. Now, if I'm running U, I'll take 3 or 4 counter spells and Test will probably see 1 copy. Maybe 2. Test is a solid card, in the right situations. Its great for removing deck engines, such as Ultimatums etc and so on. But it is totally a trap and should be employed warily.
Poor Seka, he did the purple love and all just to get ignored by CGB showing the pet.... feels bad (he even let CGB finish without scooping!) (Edit): Glad to see he got revenge later on! :D
3 mana for a 1/1 at instant speed that draws you a card unfortunately doesn't add enough to the board for your mana. There's a reason why the Simic Flash decks never ran Shark Typhoon.
@@IAmebAdger good thing it is also an enchantment that can give you late game value so when you get mana flooded and run out of flash gas you have something to play that lets you double dip value.
I defend test of talents in every deck that runs counterspells, also defend the idea of variety of counterspells (negate, test of talents, mystical dispute, saw it coming and jwari disruption)
The problem with this deck is that Slitherwisp is drawn too inconsistently and can easily be removed. If you cut heartless act (and maybe brazen burrower) and instead use a mutate stack built around sea dasher octopus and dirge bat you still have removal and way more tempo. It is also nice to mutate onto faerie vandal. That basically always gets a card (because who blocks fairy vandal?) and let's the stack grow each turn. To protect against targeted removal starlit mantle is very neat and steals opponents that had to endlessly dig for removal the last remaining will to live 👍 Against aggro blacklance paragon is nice - usually "one mana: remove target attacking creature, gain 3 life". If there's still space consider omen of the dead to avoid removal. But since it is mainly intended to get back Slitherwisps or blacklance paragons it should not be combined with the mutation stack variant.
Hey I played against this yesterday. It was a really fun match against my Golgari Ramp, it seems like both decks cast similar things on similar turns, felt like an incredibly balanced and fun matchup.
I've been playing dimir flash for ages, and I rarely have luck if 1) I'm on the draw (which is 75% of my games, unless I scoop 3x in a row), or 2) no nightbonder So many things can go wrong and those big flash spells are just always one turn slow.
CGB, Kyle (FPS Russia) was talking about you on the PKA podcast. Some of those guys have been getting into Magic hardcore lately. You should reach out. They’d probably have you on.
If I’m short of weekly wins, I’ll Play queue turbo mill. Turn 1 Ruin Crab is probably an 80% scoop rate. I remember trying to run this when mutate was really big, never had much luck with it either. Nice to see some of the older decks making a comeback though, break down some of the staleness. Thanks man. Keep up the great work! CKC
Blacklance paragon could be much better than a shark. It could give you 3 life, it could ambush opponent creatures, and it costs only 1 mana with nightbonder in play. Moreover, it could create early pressure, so the opponent should react and spend a spell that otherwise would kill your slitherwisp.
I feel like this manabase could use some slight adjustments in the basics. You run way more blue cards than black ones. Especially considering the heap of cards that require double blue I would suggest swapping some of the swamps for islands. In the video you had quite the few awkward spots because of the excess of swamps.
Its my first time commenting, thanks for the videos, you are very entrenetain to whatch , greetings from Mexico, ps: my favorite color in Magic its blue too (op if you ask me) thanks for all your work
Fucking love this deck! Fun fact if you play a flash card and they counter it, then while on the stack play Cunning Nightbonder and it will fizzle the counter spell 🤯
CGB: Test Bad 10:07 : Let's keep the test Me: 👁👄👁 (I'm joking around, I know test has its uses in some situations/matchups but is mostly bad for most situations/matchups)
Yes, it is legal in standard. If you need a sideboard: try starlit mantle against targeted removal and blacklance paragon against aggro. In my opinion mutation cards with flash are also worth a try.
The current meta I'm seeing in historic is mizzet's mastery and unburial rites decks. So their whole deck is based on casting those cards. And test is a fantastic one of there, counter their centerpiece then crush them.
The people hyping test of talents have countered an emergent ultimatum with it. As long as 40+% of the meta is Sultai Ultimatum the card isn't dead. It kinda looses to every other deck, but removal is also dead against decks without creatures and still has a place in most decks. Of course a test of talents is much more narrow than something like heartless act, but if you have to tank your winrate a bit to put the sultai spamming people into their place i'd say worth it.
My theory isn't that they hate nightbonder, but that they hate dimir. I'll also say on my worse days as soon as I see blue/black I just quit because it won't be fun.
You’re okay against the first sultai was dumb. That borrower and shark you should’ve kept. They had no cards in the graveyard to escape the polukranos. Plus you had borrower to keep bouncing it
Not gonna lie, as much as I hate what this deck does, I must confess: I have a dimir flash deck named "Fuck You" that I play after losing more than two times in a row. It's satisfying revenge
Test of talents is a great card, until you wish it was negate...or Saw it Coming. I run 2 copies, with 2 negate and 2 SiC. Nice to have When you want to confiscate an opponents removal. It works best as a sideboard card. If you know it will be useful, it's nearly OP. Random BO1, it's too hit or miss. You end up with a janky deck like mine. Don't be like me. Edit: it's OP in BO1 draft, though. Very advantageous information on a counter.
Cgb my man you are the epitome of what it is to be mythic rank. I envy your big brain and love how you go thru your deck answering most opposition with ease. Why no Yorion, CGB? Isnt this a Yorion loving channel? I cant imagine when september comes and Yorion is goin to silde out of standar format and the poor sky noodle isnt goin to have idk some kind of Yorion farewell days ;)
Love this deck; don't understand why he thinks Test of Talents is a scam; in the game he lost it countered the Brazen Borrower, which A) countered the card entirely so they didn't bounce the shark, didn't get the card advantage/couldnt play the creature later and B) let him see their hand so he could plan ahead. The problem wasn't the test of talents, it was a great card against that deck (essentially an essence scatter/negate in one + lets you see the opponents hand/library), the problem was drawing so many Omen of the Seas and none of the creatures he needed. True he might not have used a Saw It Coming on the brazen borrower petty theft, but that wouldnt have put him in a better position, just a more oblivious one.
I mean, the mystic subdual worked well in the one time it was in there, so that's nice. Would have worked well against the mono white deck too probably. Buuuutt would have sucked against the adventure deck, would have sucked against yorion style decks too probably.
