Just finished Beloved. This book is like no other. And Toni Morrison is a genius, a true storyteller, and has such a unique way of manipulating language. I am so sorry it took me so long to read her work. I wish I would’ve been able to read it while she was alive because this book has changed me. Rest In Peace Ms. Morrison. There will never be another like you.

This is certainly one of the most difficult and best books I have read. There are sentences in Beloved that I may never understand. But I'm okay with that. I had to read the 1st chapter 3 times before I dared moved on and now that I've completed the book I look forward to the next time I read it. Morrison is a rare jewel in all of literature.

She makes me realize my own story, the story of my brethren, who are only brethren because of an error in the code, is one that needs to be told, that I should not worry about being too preachy, for as long as I write the thing truthfully, it will come out far more tastefully than my fear of it becoming inspiration porn

Never read the book. After watching the film (or at least trying to) it gave me the most awful nightmares I've had in years. Not that I understood the relentless shock pornography of the disjointed mish mash that assaulted my eyes. I'm not surprised it flopped. The scene where Oprah squats in her Victorian finery and takes a piss WAS taking the piss. There for effect, there to fill a gap and apologise for having nothing to say really. Maybe I should read the book? (go on, dare me)

Maybe reading about her pissing is prefered. Haven't watched it, almost halfway through the book and I'm struggling to see how it could be adapted to film ...sometimes a tale is experienced best in its inner dialogue form uh, especially with a literary icon like Morrison
