  • cant grip the filter and slipping oil filter wrench, and don't want the mess from driving a screwdriver through, try a lillte emory cloth between the filter and wrench. works like a charm.

      It’s extremely impressive how you can tell that the reason it was stuck was due to over tightening, just by looking at it. I don’t think anyone else can do that

      I'm just a hammered a screwdriver right through the damn filter and then use the handle of the screwdriver for leverage and unscrew the mother that way

    Matco claw for the win. I’ve had the band wrench squeeze them and still wouldn’t move. Claw and a breaker bar has worked every time for me.

      And if the oil filter doesn't break loose and you end up with no metal left to grab? Screw driver thru the side is stupid and is only done by people who probably shouldn't touch anything under the hood or under the car. You spend $10 on a claw type oil filter wrench it works 1000 x better and less risky than a screw driver in the side.

      @@jacobearhart4170 alike to you I also have a claw but sometimes even the claw doesn’t quite do the trick and slips or even crushes the filter without success. At that point the screwdriver 🪛 along with a hammer becomes your only option and it works every time.

Been doing oil changes on those cars at a shop for years and never had an issue. just make sure to stab it below the stem of the housing

    I have a matco claw wrench that works even in tight spaces like that on the GM engines. Its tight but will get it out unless its stuck, stuck. Also have a set of band wrenches that have fine teeth on the band so they don't slip.

      I have two claws and neither fit on this do to the stupid oil pan design, but the band wrench with little dimples has never failed me if it fits

      @@user-white007 I’ve had both the claw and the band crush the filter but every time I’ve ever beat a screwdriver into one (which is pretty rare) it turned the filter with no argument.

    I like the strap filter wrenches with 3/8 and 1/2 drive bar on one end. Fits any filter plus good for a ton more uses.

      I usually end up using a claw on oil and even fuel filters. And if that doesn’t do the trick then it’s about to get a screwdriver hammered through it.

      I use a plumbing style strap wrench. It has a rubber belt instead of the steel clamp thing. They're in the plumbing aisle. Very useful tool!

      I got a pair with hard rubber teeth/ridges on the end.. I just grab the sucker and dent the sides and boom doesn’t matter how stuck it is 😂

    Just glue the sand paper or emery cloth to the inside of your 3$ cheepo oil filter wrench and go use it for 30 years like I did. You don't need snap-on, you need to snap out of it....

    I always use one of the universal ratchet attachment oil filter wrenches with multiple jaws that grip tighter the harder you need to turn it. Have yet to find one that it doesn't work on.

      I use a plumber's strap wrench, the kind with a rubber strap. If I get frustrated I jam a screwdriver through the filter and turn it that way.

    You can get a 3 jaw oil filter remover for your wrench for $5. It works perfect every time especially when you don’t have the clearance for the strap

    Sometimes I'll put a shop rag in between the filter and the band wrench and it helps keep it from slipping.

    I’ve been using this method for at least 10 years. Plumbers cloth. You can also put a sheet of sand paper on a towel/rag for improved grip.

    Guy at work thought I was crazy for using emery cloth just like this and popped it off in seconds, now he keeps emery cloth in his toolbox. But also what works even better is filter bowl sockets best investment I ever made.

    Aw man! That's awesome! Wish I'd thought of that! Maybe just use Emory cloth and hand to remove filter - insulates hand from a hot filter too! (I never use wrench on oil filters - hand tightened works fine).

    Three tiny screws set into the wrench at equal distances and protruding on the inner side of the wrench to provide grip. Works for me snd not as messy as ramming a screwdriver through it.

    Usually if it won’t grip you can just keep trying until the paint wears off. When it gets down to metal to metal it will grip a lot better. It’s not gonna work every time but most of the time it’s just the paint on the filter that makes it hard to grip.

    K&N got a nut on the end, just use a ratchet. They also make sockets for these now too!

      I changed oil to my buddys yamaha R6 it had that K&N filter with nut on the end, previously it was changed by his other buddy. When i tried to open it from that nut it just peeled right off the filter :D (Filter was seriously over torqued)

    I like the tool that's a metal cap that fits on the end of my oil filter that you use with a normal ratchet with. I have a set with several different sizes.

    Been using the old 3 jaw oil filter wrench like the ones from craftsman with a ratchet and extension for years. Never had a problem getting stuck filters off.

    They actually sell oil filter wrenches that are impregnated with media. When I was at Sears I had a buddy that had glued grip tape for like bumper steps and shit on to his filter wrench inside.

    There is actually an oil filter tool for that, it is the one that grabs the filter from the base, the you gotta use extensions and a ratchet to loose it. Usually for 3/8 ratchets. I have read a bunch of comments this tool is crap and so on, but everytime i use it, it does the job well, and easier than a regular strap or chained filter tool.

    On my 2006 Honda cr v the oil filter is in such an annoying crammed spot and you can’t get a tool and there and you can just barely get your hand to it. But I learned taking off my belt and snaking it up and around works really really well

    Whatever that material is called that is used underneath of throw rugs to keep them from sliding works well too. It's great for gripping and works well for pickle and jam jars also.

    Rubber bungy strap. Works for tightening and loosening. Wrap around and pull more on the end in the direction you want to go.

      Exactly my only problem on h.d. Filters is the strap part grabs then when I pull on the handle too hard the handle starts bending but that’s simply over tightened filters.these tools are amazing when used correctly

      @@jl4922 Just be sure to use a good quality one. When I worked at Chrysler, the Dodge Nitro oil filters would be on crazy tight from the factory and it’s in a horrible location to begin with. A good oil filter strap wrench got them loose every time.

      If you've ever dealt with an actual stuck filter that crushes when you use a filter wrench. That's the only option, but this wasn't stuck his dumbass used the wrong size wrench.

    Only tighten the filter 3/4 of a turn after the gasket contacts the block. Also, get a filter tool that fits the flats designed into the bottom of the filter, a 3/8 wrench fits into the bottom of that. Put a film of oil around the gasket so it will not stick to the block when you remove it. Pre fill the new filter with oil.

    If you start the engine for like 2 minits and stop it the oil will be a whole lubricant and the pressure goes a little down soo you can take out the filter its just a little help :3

    The reason your wrench is slipping is because it isn’t in full contact with the filter. You put it up past the ribbed section and it’ll work just fine. Or even better get the socket set that uses the ribbed section that works the best.

    I've never used strap wrenches. It seems like many have success with them but they just look janky. I've always used the claw type adjustable oil filter Wrenches. Simple and effective, and can be used with a Ratchet or breaker bar for leverage

    They make a wrench that goes over the end of the filter. If the wrench is to big, you can lay paper towels in the wrench and pound it on the filter. Works every time….👍🏻

    Take a small propane torch and slightly heat the base gasket - softens it and works almost all the time on overtightened filters

    I'll use an old ratchet strap and loop it around about 3 times and start cranking on it. works in a jam. I also use an e-z drain oil plug so it's like a 10 minute job even when I'm away from home.

    Get a set of 3/8 drive filter sockets. Cheap and work at almost any area.

    I feel like if you used a smaller set of oil filter wrench you would’ve been able to get it with the wrench, I been working as a lube tech for about a year now and all I use is those band wrenches and I’ve never had trouble getting one off, sure they’re stiff but using the correct size band wrench will do the trick, just looked like you had a lot of travel before you actuallly were able to get the wrench to lock onto the filter

    I've ssen one on so tight the can came off leaving the base. Had to dremel through the holes to get the threaded section off

    Warm engine up always worked for me
    As it cools it gets harder
    Don’t work motor when it’s hot to the touch

    Had one on a regularly serviced pickup that was on so tight that after I had completely mangled the filter I just cut off the can and had to use a torch and air chisel on the thread plate. Chisel alone was just cutting through.

    When I was a kid, I used to stab a screwdriver and turn it off, didn't care about the oil mess, until my dad caught me and taught me this method.

    Blue shop towel works aswell if you haven't crushed the filter

    Sand it to metal, then weld on a piece of rebar 👍 it works fantastically

    Or you could use filter pliers or the spring loaded filter wrench that is 3/8 drive.

    You can get either caps or many other oil filter tool makes your life easier

    You know if you just rough up the inside of your wrench it works just as well .Sand blasting usually leaves a good texture.

    I have a friend that purposely tightens his old filter with a wrench, his reasoning is the shop he used left the filter loose

    Pretty clever.
    I bought a kit of caps for the random used cars I have to deal with sometimes. Like 20 bucks off Amazon.
    Stil though, this is a good idea.

    Instead of emery cloth would 80 grit (or something pretty rough) sandpaper work too?
