- The world famous Rathyatra or Car festival in Baripada is the second most popular and 2nd oldest rathyatra of odisha. After puri jagannath Lord jagannath is worshiped only at Baripada since 1575. As per the history the holy king of Mayurbhanj Baidyanath Bhajdeo was the devotee of Lord jagannath. He had listened the stories of Lord jagannath during his childhood from his grand mother Manata( Wife of Jagannath Bhanj, Mayurbhanj King and daughter of Puri king Kapilendra Deva). He decided to have the Darshan of Mahapravu jagannath and started his journey in 1565 along with his army and courtiers. He was stopped at Athara Nala of puri and told to have the Darshan of Mahapravu jagannath with common attire and without his praja (citizens) . Baidyanath Bhaja denied to have the Darshan of Mahapravu jagannath without his citizens and with terms and conditions. He stayed near athara Nala and on the same night Gajapati Maharaja dreamed of Mahapravu jagannath. In his dreams Lord jagannath advised him to welcome Baidyanath Bhanj with all prestige as he was his devotee . As per the direction Gajapati Maharaja welcomed Baidyanath Bhanja and also Baidyanath Bhanja was given Swapna desh to build jagannath temple at Baripada. The construction of the teme started in 1568 and cometed in 1575. During the attack of Kala pahada the Rathyatra of puri was stopped so Maharaja Baidyanath Bhanjdeo started Rathyatra here with the help of his Karada Rajyas and their armies.since 1575 Lord jagannath is worshiped here in Baripada and the car festival is organised here. As Rathyatra was not happening in any part of Odisha during that time and The second oldest Rathyatra started here after puri Baripada got the title of Ditiya srikhetra (Second Srikhetra).
Here women pull the chariot (rath) of Devi subhadra which is first in the world. Here pulling of chariot takes place for two days and in Bahuda jatra also Rathyatra takes place for two days. almost 3lakhs people gather here to pull the chariot of Lord Jagannath.
