  • Today I help my son's friend begin to build his first home theater. We ended up finding a pair of Klipsch RF82 and RC62 for $400. This video serves as an encouragement that you can build a home theater on a very small budget if you are patient and shop the used market.
The RF82 / RC62 are discontinued but if you the New Version II of this series is currently available on Amazon.

Hello Youthman, I’m glad you’re helping Joe find his first home theater system. Boy does this bring back memories when I purchased my first stereo system over 50 years ago.
Back in the day, we had a local Northern California stereo store called, Pacific Stereo, which sold beginner stereo equipment, to high end systems. After saving all my hard earned monies from two summer jobs, I purchased my first stereo setup, which to this day, I remember the exact day.
To see Joes excitement, brings back those special events that happen in our lifetime. Joe will always remember the day you helped him find his first set of speakers, which you could see Joes appreciation in his eyes and tone of voice when he was talking about his newly acquired speakers.
As myself, I now have my 7.1.4 Atmos system powered by my Anthem MRX 1120 receiver and KEF Q series speakers, which I’m enjoying in my retirement years.
Just think when Joe is in his 50’s or 60’s as to what type of stereo equipment will develop in the coming years. I’m sure it will be mind blowing for sure.
Keep your vids coming, which they are so informative and fun to watch.

Hi! Youthman I'm looking to buy a Emotiva amp 5 channels 110 watts RMS do you think is enough power for Klipsch 280 tower speaker?

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Otto, as with most Klipsch speakers, the RP-280Fare very sensitive at 98dB. That means it takes very little wattage to get them to hit Reference Levels. If you need more info on sensitivity, I made a video on it here - th-cam.com/video/g-GOvn6_um8/w-d-xo.html
So with the A-500 being 125 wpc, it would look like this...
      1 watt = 98dB
      2 watts = 101dB
      4 watts = 104dB
      8 watts = 107dB
      16 watts = 110dB
      32 watts = 113dB
      64 watts = 116dB
      128 watts = 119dB
It takes twice the power to gain 3dB in volume. As you can see, with less than 10 watts, you are at ear bleeding levels if you were sitting 3' from the speakers (1 watt @ 1 meter). So 125 watts is definitely sufficient to power the RP-280F speakers. Granted, not all 125 watts are the same. Every amp uses different topology, some use massive terroidal transformers etc but as far as power is concerned, it's definitely hard to bet 125 watts for $499.00.
Hope that helps. If you do end up purchasing the Emotiva A-500 and use my Amazon Affiliate Link here - amzn.to/2xoRhy4 I would be grateful.

Planning on building a home theater with Dayton Audio speakers! Floorstanders as well as Sat-BK's for surround, Dayton's 3-Way center channel and a Polk PSW10. These'll be paired up with a $200 5.2.2 ONKYO receiver. Going to add some of their cube satellite speakers for Atmos height channels.
I'm on a pretty small budget, so would you recommend these or pass?

    • @Youthman

Honestly, the best way to stretch your money is to buy quality used gear. You can typically get much higher quality gear and speakers for the same or often less than new pricing.

Note: you should probably have a listen to some Dayton speakers. They're really budget friendly, and for their price they sound great! (At least to my ears). I'd recommend you review their MK-402 speakers. Joe and Tell did an awesome video review of their Bluetooth counterparts.

I would highly recommend getting the Dayton Audio speakers from Parts Express, they have the best prices, buying used speakers is always a gamble not knowing how abused they are.. I recently re-did my TV parlor its a smallish to medium sized room at about 13'x14' and went with all Dayton Audio AIR series speakers, I went with the AIR T-652 towers for the mains, book shelf AIR 452's for rears, and the AIR series center speaker hooked up to a Yamaha HTR-5240 5.1 DTS receiver with optical audio inputs. You may need 12" stands for the tower speakers to get them at ear level.. but in all they sound great!! Very clean and defined sound and they get plenty loud for that sized room.. and if you can afford a extra $50 avoid the PSW10, and go with the Klipsch K-100SW for a sub if you only have room for a 10" or for the same price the Dayton SUB1200 if you have the room for a 12" I had a PSW10 with my old set up and it was just a 50 watt rumble box, rather muddy and farty sounding when pushed hard..
Total cost for my new setup was $842 about the same price for 1 SVS 12" sub :)
I have no regrets.. Fantastic Picture, nice clean tight "balanced" sound not window shattering over-powering bass, just a awesome theather like experience for on the cheap!

Hi Youthman, I'm in the market for some new front speakers (Def Tech BP9060, Klipsch RP-280fa, SVS Ultra towers or Polk RtiA9) and move my Def. Tech. bp-7006 (current front) to the rear for surround. My question to you is, since the bp-7006 are powered towers, should I stick with powered towers or go with one of the others and bi-amp them? I have a yamaha rx-a3070 (roughly 150x7) for the power. I would get a separate amp in the future if I needed one. I value your opinion and appreciate all your hard work making these awesome videos. Thanks

Hi XtremeHam, it has been many years since I've heard Def Tech speakers. They have a different sound due to their speaker arrangement. I used to own Polk speakers and ended up purchasing a small system with a pair of older Klipsch CF2, KV3 and a Velodyne F-1500. I bought the system with the intent of keeping the Velodyne and selling the Klipsch but after hearing the Klipsch, I discovered they offered SOOOO much more detailed than my Polk RT-800 speakers that I sold the Polk and never looked back.
The SVS Ultra Towers are fantastic speakers. Here is my review of them - th-cam.com/video/3AyZ6SJlfNo/w-d-xo.html
I have not heard the Klipsch Reference Premiere speakers yet. Klipsch will be sending me a 7.2.4 New Reference Premiere System sometime this month.
I tried biamping once but did not hear any difference myself.
Your Yamaha RX-A3070 is 150 with only 2 channels driven. The more speakers you add, the lower that wattage becomes per channel. I had a Yamaha RX-V1800 that claimed 140 x 7 but bench test from Sound and Vision showed it was 140 x 2, then once you add 7 speakers it was only 55 x 7. The Klipsch will be the easiest to drive since they have a higher sensitivity rating.
Let me know what you decide to go with and I can provide you with an affiliate link on Amazon or through SVS directly. It's the same cost to you, the affiliate links just provide a small commission to me for referring you.
      Hope that helps,
      Michael

yes I have had them since new and paid NEW prices. so you got the speakers for basically $1000 less than me :) Also mix in a Sunfire HRS 12 for the bass and nice Denon 3805 receiver. I did just pickup a pair of Klipsch KG 3.5 for $100 and they are fantastic (for the bedroom off a Denon DRA 825R). I love the vintage Klipsch logo and sound and these are actually built in Arkansas. I enjoy your channel so I can keep up with other Klipsch "people"!

They seem way too big for the room and are placed to close for stereo separation. I would recommend sensible smaller more articulate speakers with bigger sound at lower volumes. In the UK we have Wharfedale DX2 5.1 which are specifically built for rooms of this size and are a complete system off the bat. With an AV amp supplying 25-45 watts to each speaker they would be banging out sound compared to the Klipsch.

Hey Youthman. I love your channel. I've watched several of your videos. I realize you have 70k subscribers but I have one question for you. Have you ever done a side by side of the Klipsch reference IV and the Reference II. I run the II's in my home theater. I am setting up my buddy like you did for this young guy in the video. I love the II's but the earlier IV's are more common in the used market. Have you ever done a side by side of the two series? I've read that people have said they couldn't tell a difference. I suspect you'll have an opinion that will carry weight with me.
    Pat from Canada :)

    • @Youthman

Hi Pat, I have owned over 50 pair of Klipsch speakers, many from the old IV series. I always enjoyed the IV series. They have a slightly brighter top end than say the RF 7 II but I believe the IV offers an incredible value on the used market. I would have no problem recommending them.
