  • PLEASE NOTE: This is not a tech channel, but simply a show-and-tell. It is not designed to give advice and support on vacuum tube amplifiers but to show what I get up to each week in the workshop.
    I deliberately keep tech talk to a minimum, or at least to a point where it’s understandable to the casual viewer. There are other channels more suited to that level of detail.
    I do not do reviews, either paid or unpaid. My opinions are entirely my own and do not represent those of others.
    All comments are welcome but those deemed unhelpful, rude, inappropriate, or unsavoury will be reviewed and possibly censored.

    I personally like hearing an amp tech's perspective on build quality. Might save me from spending money on something that could be unreliable when there may be better built options in the same price range. But I don't see the amps you do or have the same level of knowledge which is where you can be helpful. Thanks for what you do!

    Appreciated your comparison of turrets vs. eyelets - never thought of that happening. Something to consider.

    Enjoyed the video, great idea to focus on mains wiring, looking forward to that. Thanks for your efforts, keep up the good work. I know you don't want to make these videos technical but you do an excellent job of clearly explaining some semi-technical topics in your videos, I for one would encourage you to do more of that but would ccompletely understand and respect your wish not to should that be the case.

    Just discovered your channel, Chris. Great stuff. The Wem Dominator brought back memories from early/mid 70s when me and a couple of local guys first picked up instruments. One of the guitarists played through a Dominator bass amp just like the one on your bench, before saving up enough pocket money to get one of those new-fangled HH VS- Musician solid state amps 🤢 Even sadder, I started an electrical apprenticeship in 1976 and some early training was on valve circuits (I was in a MOD naval base) and I thought, “what a waste of time, transistors are the future, maaaan” 🤦‍♂️ I do apologise for the heresy. I’m a lapsed drummer who’s too broke and broken to gig any more so I fix up guitars now and again and I’ve done a wee bit of servicing on some amps too. I don’t have the resources to consider a self-build or even buy something at the kind of level your amps are at but I love your videos: your knowledge and teaching skills are top class. Consider yourself subscribed👍

    I wonder if the un-labeled switch on the Top Hat was something someone added? I didn't quite follow what you said it's function was.

    Whether or not calling out bad amps is cool or not depends on the motives of the person doing it and if its a fair criticism that guitar players need to know about. I for one appreciate the info.
    But it could hurt an amp maker's sales? Perhaps they should make better amps? I prefer good info that seeks to protect guitar players from buying bad amps, than protecting bad amp makers.

    Spring loaded retainers rather than a shield so to speak . I myself do not like SS bridge in this application for 2 reasons 1. Really hard turn on spike shorting tube life . 2. A lack of sage when driven to high levels the browning effect that players can use for a desired effect. Enjoyable video rather informative . The top hat work around does help with the spike however it does not give the browning effect . For this player it may not matter it what the customer wants if it can be done.

    Even though it's not lead... if you're soldering all the time I would recommend extracting. That stuff shouldn't be in your lungs.

      2024 - 1985 = 39 years. The amp is a 1972.

    Odd that Starlink isn’t fast enough. I get 200mbps down & 30 up, pretty consistently, which should be good enough for live streaming?

      @RiftAmps  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a rare occasion if get 30mbps upload, usually 20ish which is borderline too slow. I’ve got 900 each way at home so you really notice the difference

    Ahahhh! So that's answered a query Ive had for a while - why do preamp valves have metal cans around them when power valves do not? Faraday.

    • @RiftAmps
      @RiftAmps  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yup...we're always fighting a war on two fronts. Noise and Vibration. A preamp shield helps with both.

      @@RiftAmps If I may ask, then, why don't power valves come fitted with something simillar? Are they not as susceptible to interference, either mechanical or EM?

    • @RiftAmps
      @RiftAmps  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheHairyGecko It's not the valves themselves, but the point in which the valve sits in in the circuit which is sensitive.
